What is there to like about rap/hip-hop?

Perhaps it's because I grew up in a 70% black city and got beat up constantly until my parents finally moved us, but I've never found anything about the genres interesting. The lyrics sound like some simpleton was given a poetry assignment and tried his bestest to write something meaningful but failed miserably. The beat is fine, I get it, but surely that's not what people are focusing on.

I realize this may come off as inflammatory and I apologize for that, but I would honestly just like to hear what makes you musically cultured people listen to a genre that, frankly, doesn't seem like it deserves a passing glance.
>>
On the off chance that you are actually trying to gain an appreciation for rap, I don't think it's going to happen. There are some situations where your past experiences are inevitably going to colour your perceptions of certain things, to the degree that you can never see past them, and nothing other than the passage of time, or a heavy blow to the head, will change that. Just tell yourself it's not for you and move on with your life.

I hope you're not a Trump supporter though.

Not sure why you would assume I am a Trump supporter, but thanks for your comment. I don't approach the genre from a racist perspective like I feel like you may assume, it's simply uninteresting to me. I have genuinely enjoyed some of Childish Gambino's work, Aesop Rock, and a few songs here and there that I wasn't turned off by, by generally it feels like a genre that's simply baiting the intended audience.

I have no doubt many of my views and opinions would be considered racist to someone from a less "diverse" area of the country, but I have never thought of myself as such and consistently keep my assumptions in check.

If it makes you feel better I'm a Bernie Sanders supporter. I wish the people from my past the very best, but I'll be damned if I live near them ever again. I apologize that this turned into a racial post.

I found that song interesting to listen to, and I can see where some kids might listen to it, but why the glorification of robbing someone? I sound like a fucking puritan, but I don't see the enjoyment in listening to something trying so hard to be "bad".
>>
>>61707770
>the only reason you don't like rap is because physical trauma affected your judgment

Don't they call this gaslighting?
>>
>>61708077
That song is a part of a concept album. Later on in the album he asks forgiveness from his mother for being such a thug as a child. Very interesting album if you wanna know what it's like growing up in gang culture.
>>
>>61707785
I do also enjoy A Tribe Called Quest, I meant to mention them. They sound educated and are able to vocalize themselves with a fantastic sound. They are heavily influenced by Jazz, and I feel like that ultimately makes them more palatable.
>>
>>61708077
Think of it as having the appeal of an action movie/ crime narrative. Rap is based on playing the dozens, where the people rapping compete to make fun of each other and brag about how great they are, which is where most of the macho bragging stuff comes from. Maybe you should try some MF DOOM, he's got some pretty intricate wordplay, he really helped me get into rap.

That seems like a common theme in the genre, which is why I always wonder how it remains so popular as a genre. Growing up where I did I understand gang culture very well (was never a part, clearly, but it was an ever-present theme in grade school), but I can see where someone who did not would find it interesting to hear what it's like. May I ask what your top rapper/hip-hop artist is and why?
>>
>>61708176
This is one I'm always wondering about. People whose musical taste I generally agree with consistently post Kanye West as this musical idol it seems, and I've just never found the guy interesting, and in fact I'm disgusted by him. His production is what makes his music good, and he does a damn fine job with his sampling and his layering. I respect him for that, but Jesus Christ he is the most shameless racist and general cunt in interviews and in public, and I couldn't support him simply out of principle.
>>
>>61708270

>>
>>61708207
I'd say my top 5 are
Masta Ace: great story-teller - if you want a REAL hip-hop concept album, listen to Disposable Arts.

Drake: Honestly the dude can make a catchy song, and Take Care is a great album dealing with love.

OutKast: duo with a continuously evolving sound and they made some great and influential hip-hop. I recommend Stankonia, an amazing experimental hip-hop album.

Kanye West: Basically the same reasons as OutKast, my favorite album from him is MBDTF.

Nacho Picasso: Cloud Rapper from Seattle who has punchlines for days. Really no substance to his music but the production he's over along with his flow and delivery make for a very chill atmosphere. My favorite project of his is Lord of the Fly or Exalted.
>>
>>61708166
Thanks for this, I'll look into him and see where I go from there. I've heard some cool stories about west coast vs east coast but always found the songs off-putting for various reasons. This does explain the "macho" image they're constantly trying to uphold.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6dxaRlOiUY
>>
>>61708412
Awesome, thanks for the list. Drake makes me cringe, but I'll try to give him a chance. His "love songs" always feel a bit off to me. I actually own Stankonia on vinyl, but it was honestly for Mrs. Jackson, which was a staple for us back in high school. Like Drake, I find their love songs extremely cringey and couldn't handle Speakerboxxx (The red and pink double album).

It may be a bit late for me with Kanye simply because he as a person is a fucking nutbag, but I'll try to give him a fair shake.

I also enjoy Del The Funky Homosapien, is that someone a lot of people like or is he a bit out there in the community? (despite his work in Gorillaz obviously)
>>
>>61708510
I'm personally not a big Del fan only because I haven't found any of his albums very consistent. He's big in the underground hip-hop community and is important there. I believe a lot of people who are deep into hip-hop can appreciate Del

Del is good, if you like the way he raps you should check out Kool Keith, he does the really abstract flow and lyrics, and he's pretty accessible for someone who doesn't like conventional rap music.

Very cool, thanks for the recommendations. I find Del's style interesting, and he seems like a genuinely cool guy both in his personal life and in his projects. Deltron 3030 was odd, and I didn't feel like it ever turned into anything. It felt like a dud fountain firework where the streams of light and color come, but that final finale blast never goes off. No. Gaslighting is when other people pressure or try to convince a person that stuff is in their head, or make them feel doubtful, or tell them certain things that happened are lies. It's a big problem with schizotypal children and their almost always abusive parents

I was originally an independent voter out of high school and remained that way until this election. I'm not a fan of the Democrats simply because I've disliked every candidate the media has shoved down our throats for years (I also hate the fact that the media is so heavily biased towards them, it's borderline conditioning). I hate the right equally much though, since everything they do is reactionary according to what the left does so I felt like I had no political home. Bernie's plan isn't sustainable in any way shape or form, but our country needs to embrace government healthcare programs and accept the fact that they are the right alternative to what we have now. I hate some parts of it, but nothing is perfect and at least it's not as barbaric as our current system.
>>
>>61708737
Lyrically he's pretty different from the gang related macho type stuff that OP isn't a big fan of. I wouldn't recommend first come first served as an introduction or anything, but DR Octagon is a good introduction to a lot of the things that are appealing about the genre

Good to know. The production value of the most recent 3030 album was insane and the guest stars were on par with a Gorillaz album, so that impressed me immediately. It didn't really work out but I enjoyed the attempt. Kool Keith's album covers are hilariously cheezy (aside from his most recent), I guess that's a thing? What would you say I should be looking for in his music? It sounds a bit monotonous at the moment.

The problem with Trump is that he really represents the worst of neoliberalism and neoconservatism merged together. He would be taking the American policy direction of the last 35 years, where the state takes away public assets and hands them over to private power, and simply reinforce that with increased violence against us citizens. how that can be good for anyone but millionaires is beyond me

I don't get that vibe from Trump any more than I get it from any other candidate

Trump and Bernie are both meme candidates in their own regard, while everyone else is exactly what you described
>>
>>61708870
some of his stuff is monotonous, especially his choruses, but his rapping style is very dexterous, where he goes very far offbeat while still staying in rhythm with the music. Also his lyrics are bizarre and he has a pretty strange sense of humor. His projects are very hit and miss, so I'd say Dr octagon, Sex Style or the Ultramagnetic MCs album Critical Beatdown are all pretty good starting points

His verse on this track is one of my favorites

I only liked rap after moving to New York for college.
>>
>>61708991
"everyone else does it" isn't an argument though.

no one has ever proposed an efficient means of transitioning from what we have to a single-payer system. the scale of that change is unfathomable to most people.

when we talk about the healthcare system, we're talking about millions of jobs and millions of peoples lives

low income people can already get state healthcare, and if you're dying it's not like medical personnel can just let you die. if you have to go to the emergency room for something life-threatening, you will be treated and stabilized. they can't just let you die.

single-payer healthcare isn't without its issues. there are women in the UK who have fake tits which were paid for by the NHS. there are people in Canada who need organ transplants who are literally put on waiting lists just to see their fucking doctor, much less actually get the transplant.

the benefit of a capitalistic healthcare system is that you can just go to the doctor and get in debt. I'd rather be alive and in debt than dying because I'm on a waiting list.

Trumps doing a lot of race baiting with his anti muslim/mexican propoganda, and he's a direct plant from the business community. i feel you on the other candidates, especially Hilary, who's really up to no good, but I find trumps appeal to racism very disturbing, and feel that if he actually get most of his policies through he'd only make America and the rest of the world a more dangerous place while making as much money for himself and his friends in the process
>>
>>61709016
Oh trust me, it took me a while to decide that I would vote for Bernie. I'm not a fan of socialism as a system, it just doesn't work out when you have such a heavy strain from the lower class as we do in America. What swayed me was the fact that I'm a nurse and the amount of people who are taking on life-destroying amounts of debt in order to maintain a normal lifestyle is astounding and terrifying. I'm young, I am and will continue to be wrong for the rest of my life, but healthcare reform is a necessity. There will continue to be gross healthcare abuse, just as there is now, but if I could never see another person turned away because they didn't have the money, I would be thrilled.

Foreign nationals are not entitled to enter a country just because they want to, and Islam isn't a race of people, it's an ideological position, a belief system, and to call it islamophobia is hilarious because "phobia" implies an irrational fear of something. Suspicion of Islam is 100% justified. They kind of commit more terrorist attacks than any other religious group by a huge margin.

Talking about deportation is not racism, it's enforcing the fucking law. Clinton and Bush both removed millions of illegal immigrants a piece, the fact that Obama lapsed on that shouldn't be the new standard.

My dad is a legal immigrant who worked his ass off to come to the US legally, and any faggot who wants to just give that privilege away to anyone who wants it, just BECAUSE they want it can eat my asshole. And by the way, my dad came from Egypt, a MUCH poorer and farther away country than Mexico, several decades ago, when it was much more difficult than it is now to come in legally. How did he fucking do it? You'd never know by listening to the fucking sob stories out there

This has nothing to do with race, I would feel the same way about any white European, Arab, African, Asian, whoever might come here illegally. You aren't entitled to stay here if you came here illegally. You can GTFO.
>>
>>61709050
>there are people in Canada who need organ transplants who are literally put on waiting lists just to see their fucking doctor, much less actually get the transplant.

That's not because of our healthcare system specifically, but because our government has been systematically under funding it for the last decade, and the ruptures are starting to show. Up until the last few years living in canada the healthcare system has been great, and I definitely wouldn't trade it for a market based system, you'd have to be mental to want that, especially when 50% of Americans in debt are in that place because of healthcare bills.

I have noticed issues in the last couple of years, not enough doctors and care staff, but overall that is due to government cuts and under spending in an attempt to dismantle the public healthcare system, not because of public healthcare itself

My thoughts on black people in general are mixed. I have some beautiful friendships with many, as well as very bad experiences with others. I can tell you that "white flight" is not nearly as racist as it's painted and that a neighborhood "turns" fairly quickly. It starts with a few middle class black families who have worked hard to save their money and move to an area that is statistically better for their children. What follows are their friends, who may not be quite as "good" as them visit and move tot he neighborhood on loans they can't pay off, so you have foreclosure. House prices go down, more move in. With each drop in house prices, the criminal element becomes more and more obvious and you have the families that can afford it moving out (often white, some black). After about 5-6 years you have a few straggling white families being bullied with bottles thrown through their windows (happened to us) and calls to the police claiming the white people were yelling racial slurs at them and they were scared for the safety of their children (also happened to us). This was my experience as a kid and is just a very small part of a very large social experience.

There are two kinds of black people in our country, and it saddens me that we have no way to differentiate them. It's not that "black people" are bad, it's that there is a cultural problem in many black communities and we now have governments and media saying it's white people's fault. I can tell you from experience that it is not the case anymore.

As far as Kanye goes, I just hate race-baiters. He plays the race card every chance he gets. He's abhorrent in interviews, and he seems childish and unprofessional.

I'd be glad to share more if you have a particular subject.

Too bad it's literally impossible to reduce global poverty by importing immigrants

The US already takes about a million immigrants each year, while a net increase of about 80 million new global poor are born each year

Taking that million each year doesn't reduce global poverty at all because those people just become part of the new slave class in the West, driving down wages for the society as a whole, while their home countries remain shitty and have more poor people than ever

It would literally be better to increase foreign aid and not let in any immigrants at all. Fite me

I realize that is the most horrible way on earth to say it, but that's just how we've always known it. I'm not so sure it's even a race issue, it's gone far beyond that these days. The issue is simply that many black people who disagree with the way the others live still support them simply because they share a common skin color. My friends and I have talked extensively about these issues, and there's just no way to breach the subject without coming off as a complete racist thanks to the broad definition the word "racism" has in modern context. Why do you feel white flight should be more common?

>i get obnoxiously pedantic about shit that no one gives a fuck about because that's the only way i can delude myself into feeling superior to people who are more successful than me
>i can't help but posture on a faggy music board overwhelmingly populated by underaged kids because i'm just that insecure and i also have shitty music taste
>i'm also a racist, probably because i got cucked by a real nigga one time but hah, jokes on them, they don't know REAL GUN TERMINOLOGY like me, a gun expert!
Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

How Does having a bigger dick make someone worse off?

I think that penis envy is the heart that beats within the oily body of the conservative.

That or their own repressed homosexuality, whichever comes first

For me it's the ease of producing hip-hop, and creating lyrics. My musics no good by any means, but as a creative outlet it's a lot of fun.

It's that fun, and energetic boost you get from thinking fast and smart word play that I enjoy, and hearing others do it with skill is impressive.

imo it might just not be your thing, and that's fine mang
