One thing I learned is that everyone has their own taste in music. And each of them has their own reason for liking it or not.
For example, I can't understand what's the appeal of songs like "Stairway to Heaven" or "Highway to Hell" which many consider to be the Bible of music or something. I try to value music piece by piece, without outright dismissing it or blindly accepting it. Stating an opinion on music based on its source without listening to it is the equivalent of ad hominem.
However, the reason some people like videogame/anime OST is because it's tied to memories they had with them. For example:

I can perfectly recall the scene where this piece is played and that's why I'm so fond of it. If I didn't watch the show then maybe I wouldn't notice anything special about this music. But that doesn't mean the whole OST is great.

I haven't played the game, but I'm a big ragtime fan, so I have this piece on my playlist.
The problem with OST afficionados is that they don't look for other music and just settle down with what they have.

One of my best friends pretty much just listens to video game music. He works at Gamestop and even has a copy of the Super Smash Bros soundtrack in his car.
He also has a qtp2t artsy gf, a college degree, and friends. For his birthday I got him a Broken Bells CD and that got him out of the OST realm a bit. He also listens to NMH and AJJ a lot.
I don't know; I think it's really funny he's really into video game music, but he's a pretty good human being overall and doesn't really fall in the stereotype most of you have given to people like that.
