Probably the first time the artist clung to life until 3 days after the album released after setting the albums release for his birthday 2 months beforehand

When Lou Reed recorded Lulu, you can tell he knew it was gonna be his swansong.

>The greatest disappointment...
>>
>>61671232
It has, but Bowie is the first I know to time and plan it's release with such serendipity and also the first I know of to hide his illness as part of the effect of the album.

I fucking hate this piece of shit, but I know you retarded faggots on this board love to circle jerk your ultra avant garde hipster cocks over this album
>>
>>61673004
I have never seen a single person say that this album was remotely good on this board and outside of it
>>
>>61673051
When it came out it was memed really hard
>>
>>61673051
I'm suprised, at least once a day I see a circle jerk over this album on this board, you're lucky you've avoided it this far.
>>
>>61673051
I absolutely love it. I'm a big Lou Reed fan though.

Whenever I've mentioned how much I like it on this board, people generally just say I'm trolling.

(By the way, another person who loved it was David Bowie: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/apr/20/david-bowie-lou-reed-masterpiece-metallica-lulu )

Lol he's toast
>>
>>61673164
I'm curious, why do you like it? I have never considered myself a big Lou Reed fan, although I do enjoy TVU and some of his solo output. I just didn't like Lulu that much, although I don't think it was absolute garbage like everyone was making it out to be.
>>
>>61673051
david bowie said it was lou's greatest work and his masterpiece.

ever since i've read that quote i've seen a ton of nice/good opinions on the album
>>
>>61671338

- For one thing, I just don't think it's that much different to a lot of Reed's other work, it's just more metal than usual. So the question - for anyone who's a Reed fan - should really be "why don't you like it"?

- Love the vocals. Reed is one of my favourite vocalists, and on Lulu he basically sings in as Lou Reedish a way as possible.

- Fantastic production.

- Lots of interesting influences on many of the tracks. E.g. the ambient coda on Junior Dad and the minimalist (a la Reich, Glass, Riley etc) influence on Mistress Dread.

- It strikes a nice balance between more experimental elements and catchy tunes. Brandenburg Gate and Iced Honey, for instance, are just great, catchy rock/metal songs.

I enjoy it is a conceptual spoken word piece, but I don't hit the gym with it on my ipod.

It's brilliant, and it's not supposed to be fun.
>>
>>61673004
I will never listen to that thing in full. But Junior Dad...

That is a grade A swan song if there ever was one. I'm glad that's the final chronological release by Lou. Just like him

it will definitely get more acclaim now tho. his death is literally part of the experience. i feel bad for anyone who didn't listen to it beforehand, because listening to it before and after were 2 totally unique experiences
>>
>>61675382
He held it together to write some pretty interesting lyrics. Obviously almost all the music was 90% James 10% Nicky though. One of my favorite albums.
>>
>>61675417
yeah a lot of people loved even in the days between the album's release and bowie's death

his death is inextricable from the music at this point, but it can't tip the critical scales that much. it was intentional after all.

Ian Curtis knew he was going to kill himself when picking this album cover, died before it came out.

The cover is a tomb if you can't tell.

"The 73 year old Charles still comes through in high style on this final recording. Age is noticeably kinder to him than some of his partners (Willie Nelson has never sounded older) but since Ray had the good luck of owning the studio, he could also do as many retakes as he needed. Elton John makes many of the same mistakes in his 50s that Charles did at that age, including letting his physical prowess override the message of the song."
>>
>>61679520
Yeah that's what makes Bowie's death different. The album only made sense after he died, it was like the album was missing a piece of the puzzle that we weren't aware of, and it wasn't truly completed until his death. An album that makes sense upfront because they're publically dying isn't quite the same. I'm sure Bowie's not the first but it's certainly a unique thing.
>>
>>61680039
In that sense, it's uniquely different from Cash's or Johnny Winter's last records in that most of us already knew they were on death's door.
>>
>>61679820
>>61680001
This last album was actually a very canny move on Ray's part (and he was a shrewd guy by any standard). Having all those guest singers is a guaranteed way to move albums since all of their fans will buy the thing.
