I think it has to be. Simply the fact that we've never seen any piece of art use it's creators death as a central force and drive for narrative, makes it truly visionary.

David Bowie's death has completely and undeniably affirmed /mu/'s position at the bottomest of the bottom on the pleb-patrician ladder.

This is awesome to witness.
>>
>>61662952
My initial reaction was that it was good. Now after his death, I realize that the entire album was about him preparing to die. So in a fucked up way, yah him dying right after its release makes it kind of amazing. Its like David Bowie's goodbye album. He knew this was probably the last thing hed ever record
>>
>>61663353
He got an MTV Video Music award before his passing in 2002-03 but damn Hurt video had me in tears
>>
>>61663378
I think he meant Major Tom since it was using that character to represent his dead. When so Bowie took its place and cried he was a Blackstar, which is a star with a velocity that exceeds the speed of light. He was talking about leaving this world
>>
>>61663500
>>61663491
>doughnuts was recorded just before he died so its about him dying
Yah, if you listen to that album without knowing he died shortly after you'd never make the connection with death. I don't think j dilla really wanted the album to be about dying
>>

he made 90% of the album on the hospital bed where he died

and again, almost none of the songs are about dying. Maybe like 3 or 4 tracks refer to him dying
>>
>>61664130
All of the songs are extensions of himself as a human being.
One of the many themes of the album is his death and his acceptance.

What the fuck are you saying? The album is everything J Dilla, including his death.
>>
>>61663378
Me.
>>
>>61664241
Weird so few of them are about death then huh?

Black Star is literally a concept album about death. Death is just a subject on donuts, Id hardly call it a concept album
>>
>>61664276
did we listen to the same album?

did you even listen to the album?

donuts has death all over it
>>
It has a great concept, but I think its silly to let the 'story' behind the album mean more than the music.

Like this clearly isn't his best album, or the best this year, but it is still good, and it's good that he was able to make a definitive statement before his death to give people actual closure. Could you imagine if 'the next day' was his last album... fuck that.

also as a side note my dad read some reviews of the album and ordered scott walkers bisch bosch. He only knows scott walker from the walker bros. Not sure if he'll like it.

The title track repeatedly refers to a "solitary candle." "He told me it was about ISIS," says McCaslin. "It's just an unbelievable tune." (McCaslin's ISIS assertion is news to Guiliana and Visconti, who say they have no idea what the song is about.)

There's this problem about removing cancer postmortem. The patient is already dead.
>>
Calling it now: Another artist will come up in a few days and reveal that Bowie asked them to carry on his legacy

A convenient thing to say, but you obviously weren't on here the previous few days with tons of unironic praise for it (though a generous amount of masked Bowie memes).

Ok, I am an idiot.

I just realized that the parts of the stars are letters and they means BOWIE.

Animals is worse than all of those albums except The Wall
>>
Not a single non-kickass song on this record imo. Some are better than other but all of them are really good. Throughout my entire first listen I just kept on thinking "damn it sounds like kendrick lamar produced this". I was not at all suprised when the producer said they were heavily inspired by tpab. I read some where else on this board that he was inspired by death grips, is this true?
>>
>>61672506
I think it's justifiable. With this being such a calculated release, it's obviously something to consider. It's a straight up death concept album and the whole situation should be taken into account when reviewing the atmosphere and introspection going on throughout the album. But whatever, I'll let you get some good boy points from yourself for trying to be "above" others' ratings.
>>
>>61673227

>>
>>61673227
Yeah, just search "bowie death grips" or something, there are quotes out there about them listening to Death Grips from Sacramento or something. It's thematically relatable because of the death theme and whatnot.

It's definitely one of the best concept albums there are. The subject matter and presentation of it was powerful and left a huge impact. The music is still not good as pic related which also had a subject matter presented in an emotionally heavy way.

it can be a lot of things

A black star in the poetry sense is a dead star, a star without light. He was a star, now is dead. His light is out.

But cancer turn of the light.

It is a conceptual album about dead and life after dead.
Look at the videos.
Why Lazarus?
Check the other songs, I think that he is telling us something more, what? I don't have idea.

>>61662952
Angry Kid is better but its good.

I prefer psychedelic music to stuff like this.

>>61674705
The blackstar is Bowie. When a star turns into a black hole, its light goes out, but its gravity remains. David Bowie is dead and now the weight of his legacy is all that's left.

I've actually always thought Kanye West was similar to David Bowie for a couple of reasons.

I assumed from the start it was Bowie reflecting on his approaching death.

So was it public knowledge he had cancer? Or was this album sort of his way of announcing it? I consider myself a pretty big Bowie fan and I had no clue at all he was terminal
>>
>>61681226

There was absolutely no public knowledge about his cancer until his death announcement came out. I honestly don't know how he managed to keep it a secret for 18 months.

>>61681226
