The main thing I remember about him was that Curtis suffered from both grand mal epilepsy and clinical depression - and his antiseizure medication had a side effect of making the depression much worse. Toward the end of his he resorted to self-medication - between all of this, the strain on his marriage, and the day before his suicide reportedly having a seizure so bad it broke his collarbone.

Balance was already dead when The Ape of Naples was released. A lot of the material goes back to the 90's and various live performances, though. I think it's more depressing to realize that in order to make the album, Peter had to put together all these vocal takes of a guy who was his best friend and partner for decades.
