I've only listened to S/T, Space Oddity and Blackstar. Should I keep listening to the rest of his discography chronologically or should I skip some albums?
>>
>>61616473
>you will never have a threesome with Bowie and Iman
why live
>>
>>61616619
Chronologically. There are only three albums not worth listening to:
Original S/T (1967)
Tonight (1984)
Never Let Me Down (1987)

Almost everything else is essential, except perhaps Black Tie White Noise, Earthling, Hours and Reality. (I enjoy all of those albums personally, but those are the ones that are debated the most, I think,)
>>
>>61616619
You've got past the shit first album and pretty bad second album. Keep going chronologically. TMWSTW is great but then it really kicks off with Hunky Dory. Hunky Dory through to Scary Monsters is among the best runs by an artist in history.

OP here, go through it chronologically. it's been really, really fun and I plan on doing this with artists like Kate Bush and Bjork in the future.
>>61616696
I would personally say the only album worth skipping if you're truly trying to experience the whole discog is Pin Ups, and that's only because it's 100% covered material, and none of it is better than the originals.
>>61616714
desu senpai I really enjoyed parts of Space Oddity, more so than Man Who Sold the World. That said, you're definitely right, Hunky Dory through Let's Dance is a phenomenal run
>>
>>61616864
Maybe I was a bit harsh on Space Oddity. It has some good songs for sure, but TMWSTW is where things really start for me. Out of interest, what are your answers for the questions you asked in the OP?

>also, thanks to everyone who posted in the Station to Station thread last night, I wasn't feeling it at all at first but encouraged repeated listens really helped me understand it more.
It took me a few listens to "get" StS too. I was mesmerised by the title track on the first listen and it remains my favourite song, and I loved Golden Years from the beginning too, but the rest of the album took time. I now view the album as one of his true masterpieces, so maybe in time you also will
>>
>>61617025
Man I hope so. The first track was immediately wonderful, but the other are certainly taking time. I originally found the vocals to be grating and sort of conflicting with the instrumentation but I'm coming around a bit. the Berlin Trilogy has really changed my perception of Bowie as an artist so I may find more appreciation as time goes on. As for your question, my answers are here :) >>61614819

6/10, best song is I Can't Give Everything Away

>>61617242
I'm sure it will only continue to grow on you. It felt disjointed for me for quite a while, but it now seems strangely cohesive as an album. It jumps from vastly different styles constantly but retains a certain feel throughout, which I love.

Of course the presentation is also fantastic too. The Thin White Duke is such a fascinating character for me; far moreso than Ziggy Stardust. He doesn't look as outlandish as the older glam personas, but he's still infinitely more striking to me. And then there's the fact Bowie was on insane amounts of cocaine and going through extreme personal conflicts at the time, both of which combine to make StS his lyrical peak in my opinion.

Great choices by the way.

A few rock stars have been knighted, including Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John and Sir Mick Jagger – much to the anger of his fellow Rolling Stone, Keith Richards, who felt that Jagger should have declined … like another of Sir Mick’s friends, David Bowie. Bowie turned down a knighthood in 2003. “I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that,” he said. “I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for.”

>Favorite Bowie era

Halloween Jack/Thin White Duke. I love all of it but those have always stuck with me most.

>Favorite Bowie album

Diamond Dogs. I absolutely love it, and while Station to Station and Low keep battling for it, it's the one that made me fall in love with Bowie and the themes he shot for go past the glam people usually write off and resonate with me.

>Favorite Bowie song

That's a really hard question, so I'll just give a list in a vague/no-particular order

>Fascination
One of his most absolutely overlooked and underrated songs. It's so damn funky, it's so soulful and earnest in performance, and it's absolutely dripping with sex and deals with that kind of love, lyrically, that is a rare sight. The song that made me look into Bowie.

>Sweet Thing/Candidate Suite
Love it lyrically, love the sound, I have always had a thing for multiple-part songs or reprisals so it's right up my alley.

>Young Americans
Literally the best song of all time, absolutely perfect, and its content is still relevant today. Absolutely hilarious that a Brit perfectly encapsulated the ethos of young America even today in the mid-70's.

>Alternative Candidate
Great, very different, very personal track. Different vocals from almost anything he's done, at least in that era. Lyrics that really, really, really fucking jive with me, and is arguably the most personal song he wrote, in a sense that it's absolutely on the nose about what it is saying and where he was clearly at when he wrote it. Underrated, found here, give it a listen. >>61624414

>Thoughts on Blackstar
I am waiting on my copy to arrive and hadn't had the time to listen even if it was here, which kills me. The title track has grown on me a lot, and I could go on at length about it. Haven't listened to the rest because I'd already heard Sue and Tis A Pity and didn't want to listen to over half the album before it was out.

I am so happy we can even have a Bowie general now. Made my day.

I mentioned in this thread that its my second favorite album after Scary Monsters.

I acknowledge that its by no means the peak of Bowie's creativity and he has done a lot of better albums in terms of quality in 70s, but its still really underrated.
The all-around feel and drive of the album never lets me down.
My favorite tracks from NLMD are;
Day-in Day-out, title track, Glass Spider and Shining Star.
Really the only weak tracks in the album are the plodding Beat of Your Drum and just plain weak New York's in Love.

8, approaching 9 out of ten. I've been listening to it on repeat which is a good sign. I would be happy if this were his last.

I never plan to listen to Reality because of how god-awful the album cover is.
Is it worth swallowing my pride /mu/?
I like Heathen

I like it. New Killer Star and Bring Me The Disco King are the best tracks on it.
