There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Learn how you can be a programmer and make it in music, discover the secret of getting the very same warm, fuzzy, analogue sound as everyone else, and make that sub bass in a synth, yo!

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy!

Evenin' /prod/sters!

I'm back in the musician's seat! It's been a long time since I've recorded myself. My fingers are bleeding and I kinda suck but it's all good fun. Me and a friend are redoing one of my orignals of yore for fun, and I'm using it as a springboard to start a new album.

Pic releated, ribboned for your pleasure.

Can someone explain to me what 'Midi Thru' is?
A keyboard I want to get has Midi I/O but not thru, per what someone has told me.

What am I missing out on without Midi thru?

Middy Threw allows you to daisy chain numerous gear together, using massa/slave configurations.

IN: Accepts external MIDI
OUT: Outputs the MIDI generated by that device
THRU: Outputs the input/source/master MIDI for to carry it "through" to another device.

I'm sort of confused. When would I ever need to chain more than one keyboard together?

Like, maybe if I wanted different synths all on the same note in a track, perhaps?
Just want to make sure I understand this properly...

Because, if that's the case, I could always do that myself on my DAW. Sounds like thru comes in handy when playing live, I'm guessing.

I am looking to get the Alesis VI 61-key controller, and it only has MIDI out...which is pretty standard I guess.

But, it has aftertouch, standard mod/pitch wheels, semi-weighted keys, drum pads, and velocity pressure for the keys and pads.

Should I look for anything else in a controller other than that?

MIDI through is so you can generate bleeps and bloops in one peice of gear and have another piece of gear generate its own bleeps and bloops from the data... so yeah, if you have an integrated studio with all kinds of crazy drum machines and synths and your kick drum needs 5 machines going THUMP, THUD, THWOOT, THAAAAARRG, and THUCK to make it sound right then yeah, you'll need MIDI thru. Otherwise meh.
>>
>>61570703
>Should I look for anything else in a controller other than that?
Sorry forgot to answer you. Idunno brah, I don't have a fantsy controller, I do the majority of my sequencing and automating with the mouse in my D'AW, I just have a fairly simple 88-key controller, synths are all in the box. So I don't really know what's best for hardware-based stuff, I do it all in Reason
>>
>>61570809
I think I get what you're saying but I'm slightly confused still. So, having MIDI thru will basically help keep other sounds in a track in-tune with other sounds (e.g. the main synth playing on the master keyboard) -- the same data will keep other sounds playing on other instruments like drums and such?

Am I understanding this right?
Thanks for explaining by the way
>>
So I take this one song from a band that's dead and the record company is no longer around and add a bunch of post processing+slow down and I get vaporwave? OR do I need to add a side chained drum beat to it or chop it up into a repetitive mess?

What is that little box on your keyboard slot on the desk? What does it do? what do all those little buttons do?
>>
>>61571322
It means you can have MIDI data being generated on one piece of gear and send it to as many other pieces of gear as you want, by going thru the "THRU". So that you can press the C4 key on your synth and have like twelve different machines will play a C4 at once. It's allows you to use each piece of MIDI equipment as a hub/splitter, so you can send a single MIDI chain to several instruments. Just look up "daisy chaining". If you need that, you need something with a THRU, if you don't, don't whurry about it

Presonus Faderport mein negro! I bought the thing like 8 years ago and it's been fucking invaluable. I have a long-as-horsecocks USB cable on it so it floats around the room and I use it as my transport, record/loop/undo/etc controller as well as a fader with full throw and sensitive read/write/touch modes. The thing's boss for a bedroom setup. I'm pretty sure you can also hook up a foot pedal to it to drop into record as well. It's so hard to have mics and shit, headphones, and a guitar and still be able to sit at the computer and navigate freely. This thing lets me do my whole session remotely, even if it's just from the other side of the room or even if it just keeps me from haunching over the keyboard while trying not to bang my guitar on the desk.

PLUS when it comes to mixing time it's really nice to have dat fader for automating. The fader's motorized as well so you can punch-in automation easy and do proper tough/latch automation

Got a tough one if anyone here can help. I'm trying to identify what the two rack units sitting above the (what I presume is a) powered mixer on the 5150 II.

My gut tells me it's a Lexicon reverb or effects processor of some kind, but after flicking through their discontinued products I haven't been able to find anything that matches. I've had a look at some Alesis units too, but haven't finished going through them all.

If anyone knows what they are it'd be greatly appreciated.

I thought it might've been a PCM80 or M1300S but neither of them look quite right.

I had a listen, it flows well but nothing really pops in it (to me) either. Feels like something is missing. I imagine if you expanded on it you'd fill the sound out pretty easily though.
>>
>>61574946
the pcm80 is a lot thicker in width and shorter in length,
maybe its the mixing and lack of compression? I might get vocals on it, since I compose and imagine a singer or something

I don't know what either of those things are but thanks haha. I just make it up as I go along. I definitely want to learn how to program drums (or get a kit) in the future though. I think it'd really let me fill out the mix. A bass is next though.

Because then you can hook up all your midi stuff at once and you just have to designate which channel goes to what

After that it's real easy to be all like 'oh well if I select both channels 1 and 2 to record it'll play through both these at the same time'

I've got 3 hard synths and it's far less annoying to have to plug and unplug every time and I can still use patch editors/librarians for all of them individually and I just use the keyboard on the esq-1 as my master keyboard because it's the nicest of the two

Like, there are drum kit packs in DAWs that can be played using your MIDI controller, but does anyone actually do that when recording? Do people usually just make samples of their finished drum sounds they want to use and place them on a grid?

I also really don't understand what would be a good process to turn a simple default drum sample sound into something of your own.

I'm currently trying to get a beat with somewhat compressed drums going but it just sounds like shit.

An example would be the track Phaedra by Baths, the beat has a variety of drum sticks sounds that all sound different, it's not just the same sample put on a rail over and over again, it sounds organic. I can't get anything organic going.
>>
meh

https://clyp.it/a4si4kkq
>>
>>61579535
It depends, if the drums are complex and varied, it's best to put them on a drum rack and program it in MIDI. But if it's simple Kick Clap kind of stuff, audio on the grid is fine.

You might want to look into sample packs.

if you need something with XLR inputs, just make sure it has them. Or if you are going to be using a mic that requres voltage, make sure it has that as well.

Are any of you able to just think of a random tune without any meaning and inspiration and build a song off of that? I can never bring myself to finishing something like that because it's "meaningless". I have to base the melodies and sounds off of a certain emotion or idea/story/situation.

ye ur right but a synth can make an interpretation of anything you can imagine, especially if you know how to visualize and make certain waveforms
>>61588656
by grid i just mean always working in a very low quantised form - In ableton for example 1/32 so 32's of a bars, and triplets to work within.

grooves are again, within ableton, i dont know if they are in FL or other programs but they basically warp the standard idea of a 4/4 bar grid to certain genre/whatever temps e.g swing/jazz whatever - artificially giving a genre swing/groove to preset/pregridded drum loops

>Are any of you able to just think of a random tune without any meaning and inspiration and build a song off of that?
well I don't 'think' of it up, I come across most melodies and chord progressions I use while messing around on my midi keyboard, and while sound designing, and that's how my music is made mostly.

I have nothing against people having concepts or meanings in their music, but I never have had those sort of thoughts while making music, to me it's all about how it sounds, and how it feels to an extent. I've seen places like /mu/ talk about music and bring up what they thought lyrics meant, or what a flower in a music video symbolized, or how a song arrangement was supposed to convey a feeling of this or that, but I personally have never cared or sought after deeper meaning in the music I listen to like that, to me it's purely about the sounds and whatever feeling of sadness excitement or euphoria the notes/rhythm of the instruments and vocals give me. That's how I feel about it, and that's probably why my music is so meh, but I'm not going to force myself to think a certain way when I don't already..

My work flow is still kind of slow and I get lost trying to transcribe my ideas, although I feel very confident in my artistic abilities I'm just getting impatient learning the program. if you need all those features go for it. I have an Akai EIE pro which is similar features with a couple differences, mostly aesthetic and design stuff though. The Akai doesn't have a s/pdif i/o though (wish it did) so if you need that then it's no dice. I don't use outputs 3-4 often but I do use them. The Akai has 4 XLR inputs with mic pres/phantom as well which was the most important thing for me. It also has 4 hardware inserts so if you use inline outboard gear (or want to in the future) that's a huge plus. It'll run you somewhere around $220-$250 maybe.

heh yeah it does has a pretty cool look, even if it's beside the point. the meters aren't quite VU, even though they are gauged that way and have the same sweet ballistics of a classiv VU meter. they are in fact digital meters which glow nice and red if you're clipped your audio (the meters reflect the output level of AD and DA converters). so when the meters are sitting at 0VU it corresponds to like -6dBÆ’s and +5VU is 0dBÆ’s. A nice classic meter but designed with relevance to a DA/AD converter. And the red light is really obvious so it's really helpful when you're recording.
>>
>>61590967
i bought a ur22 and then they came out with new version of it shortly after i bought it

steinberg makes nice interfaces but they might do the same for the bigger versions
>>
>>61590967
It depends what features you need. if you need MIDI and normal stereo outs, I'd save the quid and get the Steinberg. If you need 6 outputs, plus MIDI and spdif streams, you'll need the Focusrite. Unless the Steinberg has some horrible design defect that has everyone hoppin' mad and hating the thing, it should be good. In fact, based on the price it might have even better preamps, who knows. Not that I've looked at the specs or reviews or anything, but unless everyone hates the Steinberg I'm sure it's fantastic
>>
>>61591054
Has the model name changed with the newer version?
Also, yeah I really don't know what to get. This is my first sound interface, and I want to spend enough to get something reliable with headroom that I might find useful in the future.
I play a keyboard, guitar, record vocals, and I'll be doing plenty of D.A.W. work as well.

I'm debating between the Steinberg ur242 and the Focusrite 6i6, but I can't decide.
I have this odd feeling that Steinberg is more reliable...but I don't have any basis for that.
>>
>>61590976
yeah me to
time to try and make my move so those 3 years wont be wasted
>>
>>61591174
Yeah, I feel the same way. As somewhat of a beginner, I think it might be an exaggeration to say I need the 6 inputs. I am a solo musician playing only two real instruments outside of my DAW workflow. Probably a waste for the 6i6 quite honestly.
>>
>>61591191
it is called ur22 mk-II and it has a few new features like ipad connectivity for cubasis app and being able to use an ac adapter for power instead of usb power only like the old model

i beleive they changed the model because certain ur22 were defective and had a noise hum from being usb powered but i dont have that problem myself
>>
>>61591255
Oh, I see. You're probably fine then...I doubt that is something I need to worry about (I hope kek). Judging from the website, it looks like the ur22 is the only one with an 'mk-II' beside it, so I'm guessing you're probably right.
But either way, if I opt for the Steinberg, I will most likely get the ur242. Looks pretty good for what I need (and may want in the future).
>>
>>61591333
i would get the one with more input/output options for sure

you never know if you meet somebody you want to record with and you actually need them
>>
>>61591550

Obviously not USB-powered ones, right?
>>
>>61591796
Just use a logitech head set ull be good niqqa
>>
>>61591796
Akai EIE Pro-anon here. No, get a mix with a XLR output. It depends what types of things you want to record. A Shure SM57 or 58 is a foolproof investment, you buy it once and you use it for the rest of your life... unless you have some specific need for a condenser mic (doing delicate quiet vocals, playing the lute, etc)

In my opinion the hierarchy of mics should be something like this (keeping this budget-conscious):
1. Go-to trust-all fool-proof moving coil dynamic (SM57/58, EV Cobalt, AT M8000, Sennheiser e609, etc).
2. Large diaphragm condenser, cardioid specifically (MXL, Nady, Blue, AT all have great offerings - some like the Nady SCM-960 offer changeable polar patterns)
3. Specialty mics - small diaphragm condensers for stereo pairs, etc., large diaphgram with sepcial features (tube mics, switchable polar patterns, etc) as well as specialty dynamics (Shure SM7B, EV RE20, AKG D112, etc) and ribbon mics. These are the later purchases once you know what you're doing, and know exactly what you need for specific things.
>>
>>61591987
Well, considering I'm about to drop nearly 200 on a good interface, I definitely want to be conscious on the price of the mic.
But yes, most of the vocals I record are ambient and somewhat quiet, so maybe a condenser mic would serve me better?
In that case, should I look for mics that you described in number 3?
I'm not very knowledgeable in those different kind of technologies quite honestly.
>>
>>61592088
get yourself a large diaphgram condenser from category 1. you'll need a pop filter. you could get away with using a 57/58 honestluy, but go to muso's friend/guitar center or B&H and look up "large diaphgram condenser" and sort by price high-to-low. read the reviews, make sure you get something cardioid. know that you'll have some trouble recording amps and drums with it (it can be done though, to varying degrees). You'll need a stand for this type of mic too, you might be able to find a package that has whatcha need.

I've kind of concluded that I prefer the Steinberg for my new interface honestly, but, I think I just came across what seems like a good choice, but fill me in nonetheless (it's rather pricey but I don't know).
Audio Technica's AT2035 is about 150 -- it's a large diaphragm studio condenser bundle with a shock mount, pop filter ,and of course the xlr cable too.
I've always been a fan of AT, what do you think?
>>
>>61592374
if it's in your budget you won't regret. AT makes lovely shit. And frankly they properly engineer all their stuff (it's not just branded Chinese imports like a lot of übercheap budget mics are - Behringer, some Nady, some MXL, M-Audio, etc). Plus it has the accessories.

I just checked the specs - really nice on paper. I don't think you can go wrong friend.

at a studio i worked at for a few years rode gave us a pile of free mics, including 4 NT1A's. Now, I'm a firm believer that there's no such thing as a "bad" microphone, only poor microphone application. Certrainly one with such great components, design, and engineering as a rode I would never call "bad"... but man, the useable applications for an NT1A/NT1 are fairly limited. I just grew to resent its love of sibilance. It was like an x-ray of the singer's teeth more than a recording of their voice, it would always hear the metal of the acoustic guitar as opposed to the notes, etc. Not to be all abstract. The point is I rarely found it flattering for anything, and so I've kinda grown against them. They have very impressive specs in terms fo noise, sensitivity, phase coherence and uniform off-axis response, transient response, etc... but I just don't think they're very flattering. I have a pair of Nady SCM-960s which are overall under-engineered and have poorer technical performane than any Rode, but I love them because they sound so nice. They're $60 a peice!

Now basically any other Rode blows them out of the water let's be honest. An NT2 is my choice over a Neumann for almost anything!

>I thought 1k dollars is a lower range price for good digital pianos.
It is. But a thousand dollarydoos is still a lot for a beginner instrument. You have a point though... a crappy pic related (which is just a controller - you need software to hear anything) is $200. It's a nice keyboard with piano-like keys, but they don't have the same counterweight and feel of a piano at all. And you'd still need a DAW. Now a digital piano is an actual instrument... if you can actually afford one and are serious about going through the monotony and bore of learning an instrument. I would buy one if I could afford it!

most digital pianos come with basic synth tones also like strings and harpsichord

so its not all monotonous

I am actually also learning a guitar now. I just decided for myself that if keep for a year at learning guitar I'll try the piano. Probably enough time to save 1k dollars.
