He is probably having a midlife crisis. He is in his 40's, and the public opinion is that his band sucks ass. He released a few singles a few months ago, and nobody really gave a shit. His time in the spotlight has faded and he is now too old to ever fit in with the young crowd again. That's all Rivers ever wanted anyways, to be accepted and praised.

Because James didn't "make it" until he was in his mid-30's. He had a realistic outlook on life and what the real world is. When you get big young you don't get this. Virtually every artist or actor or whatever who doesn't make it until they're older is more down-to-earth than their younger peers.
Rivers is an insecure man who needs approval to feel good about himself. Instead of dealing with this crisis in his mid 20s like everyone else, he instead got famous at 23, felt that high, and has been wanting that again ever since. He never learned how to be secure in himself for who he is, which is common in people who get famous young.

I always have conflicted feelings when it comes to depressed celebrities. On one hand, I understand that depression is clinical and they can't help it. It sucks, and that's not something that should ever be downplayed. I hope Rivers gets help because he seems like a nice man and no one deserves to feel that way. On the other hand, fuck me, it's difficult to watch emotionally stunted adults whine when they could literally do anything they want for the rest of their lives while I'm working a 9 to 5 probably forever. Not only that, but he seems really, really transfixed on "when Weezer was cool" and "when people still liked Weezer." Buddy, your irrelevant ass has 1 million Twitter followers in 2016 and your band plays venues that 99.9% of artists would kill to be able to headline. I don't know, I don't get it.
