Hey /gg/. I bought this pickup about 2 months ago. I intend to install it in the neck posistion of my red Squier Strat. I do not know how to solder, so here comes the real question. Do I learn how to, or do I bring the guitar to a shop? What is more cost effective? What is more useful IYO? Thanks!
>>
>>61542038
Hell, I've actually read good things about some of the Norlin Les Pauls, but that's true. Might have to grab this Traditional then.
>>
>>61542069
Forgot to mention, it's a Seymour Hot Rail. I also may want to install it in my Buddy Guy Sig Strat, but that guitar already has Gold Lace pickups. Do I do it or stick with the Squier installation?
>>
>>61542069
Assuming you don't fuck anything up, doing it yourself is both more cost effective and useful. If you aren't an idiot you should be able to swap a pickup no problem

Just got pic related
it's a 1950s silvertone h51 with a gibson made p13 pickup, got it for 30 bucks at a thrift shop.

Recorded an album with it on new-years, it's got this crazy out-of this world mac-demarco-y chorusy sound. Verging on beatles tone without even using any or many pedals

heres the album I recorded with it

be warned my recording quality is shit, but it'll give you a feel for how the guitar sounds.

Hey, don't get me wrong, there are many good Norlins. But the quality took a dive in statistical terms. That means you're more likely to run into a lemon or a poorly finished guitar. But if you try before you buy, it shouldn't be an issue.

I want a fuzz pedal that would work well on both guitar and bass. I mean it doesn't HAVE to be both but that would be preferred for my wallet's sake. I have an ODB-3 now and overall I'm not a big fan of the sound. I've looked at the BOSS FZ-2, the Behringer copy of that, and the various big muffs.

Though desu at the point I am in my guitar and bass playing I shouldn't even bother with pedals but I really want some to play with.

Or I could just get an audio interface and a virtual amp and have those effects.

or neither because I have no money

I just don't play it enough. I also like being able to sit with a guitar. I know you can sit with a V, so don't tell me to git gud. I've always wanted an LP too
>>
>>61542001
No. Don't do it to yourself, mate. Gibsons are shit guitars.

>>61542556
Alright, well mac demarco's biggest thing that gives him a distinct sound with his recording is that he uses a reel-to-reel. I don't have one of these, just my shitty computer, so you can get a similar effect by using a tube effect and some careful EQ-work on the low end. It'll be really hard to get his recording warmth, though, so focus your efforts instead on guitar gear. Mac uses a reverb tank and a vintage fender tube amp, as well as a chorus effect in most of his songs. You likely don't have the cash for this, so my reccomendation would be to find yourself a solid low-wattage tube amp on the cheap (mine is a fender silverface from the 70s, dads on kijiji or craigslist almost always underprice them), and get a multi-effects pedal. Make sure you get yourself lots of room-y reverb, and chorus, but not enough that you're going into cheesey-80s or 90s buttrock nirvana territories, just enough to make it stand out.

For song writing, look up major 7th chords and nontraditional jazz chords. Mac makes his guitar playing look easy, but it's anything but, he's actually a hell of a good guitar player, he just acts goofy on stage. Study ringo starr's solo carreer and mystery tour-era beatles for examples of mac-y chord progressions, also listen to lots of grateful dead and steely dan lead guitar work to see where he gets his distinct style from. use a 12-string for your leads if you can, or just an octave up effect (that's what I do for my leads on my album). good luck, brobro. I'm poor as fuck too, so my rig for recording is pretty much shit, as is all my guitar equipment. really I just got lucky enough to find guitars that worked on the cheap that weren't total shit.

>>61542573
yeah man, do it up.

I'm not really a metal guitarist, DESU. I wouldn't be the one to ask. Any theory but metal i can help a brother out on. It certainly isn't pentatonic, though. Maybe check out dorian or lydian modes for a similar cacophonic sound.

>>61542868
this tbqh famalia. I was plateu'd for a good year till I started a band, now I'm putting out way more creatively than ever before. Shit, i wrote this album (https://ringostarwars.bandcamp.com/) in literally a single night.

>>61542898
If you've got the 200 grand, sure, but honestly les pauls in general are overhyped. I've owned three, all three dissapointed me. Go for something unknown. Be original. be an outlier. Get yourself some weird old itallian or japanese guitar nobodies ever heard of. Make your own guitar. Get something old and gritty and amazing. ANybody can go out and buy a brand new les paul and it'll be okay, but a guitar you have to tinker with, a gutiar you have to set up and figure out and solder and a guitar that'll hurt you until you break it in, that's infinitely more rewarding, believe me.

Also gibson quality control is literally non-existant. Pointy frets, mishappen necks, fucked up tross rods, everything mang.
>>
>>61542679
Thanks man! I already have lots o pedals so I'm set on that but decent tube amps and reel to reels are always so fucking expensive.

>>
>>61542960
Mac demarco has a very velvetty sound, you want your pedals to jangle, but your EQ to be surprisingly more in the lower range.

>>61542983
If you are actually buying a 1959 Gibson Les Paul, and have the money for it, then please buy my album on bandcamp (https://ringostarwars.bandcamp.com/), I'm poor as fuck and already starving myself this week to make rent.

But if you're not the same guy, and jsut a troll, to the other dude I'd reccomend these guitars; they'll be funner, and raise WAY more questions/attract way more attention than any gibson other than a legit 1959 burst les paul

Can you read, idiot?
My original comment wasnt saying that his soloing was tasteful, it was saying that his playing in bands he works with and has worked with (Mr big, winery dogs, dlr, etc) is simple and tasteful. When he plays in his bands, his goal isnt to show off his technical skills, its to serve the song. And he does a pretty good job of it. I dare you to name one Billy Sheehan bassline in one of his bands that is overplayed shreddy crap. You're probably 16 or something, so you wouldn't know that Mr. Big was actually pretty popular among non musicians. They're still huge in Japan
>>
>>61543306
My drummer for my band stuff really likes Shure SM57s, but those are pricey so we use a shure for the bass drum and a Pyle Pro shure knockoff for the rest of the set. When I'm doing solo recordings I just use an electronic drum set plugged into my DAW.

I'd be quite happy to have one of these on my guitar. I wouldn't have to have a separate guitar for slide, and wouldn't have to commit to a string gauge (though I don't think it's likely to need but work from a string change, it's possible). Does anyone have any experience with these? The Gibson zero frets are pretty cool but they'd require pretty damn skilled maintenance when the time comes.

>My original comment wasnt saying that his soloing was tasteful, it was saying that his playing in bands he works with and has worked with (Mr big, winery dogs, dlr, etc) is simple and tasteful.

Yeah that wasn't hard to understand. But my point is its not hard to play simply and "tastefully" on the bass, most players achieve that, and giving credit to Sheenan for doing a pretty simple job, whilst talking shit about the most innovative electric bass player is stupid. What would make sheehan more impressive was if he could utilize his technical prowess without resorting to wank, which he cannot. His solo's are always the same (3 finger pluck, tap, harmonic, repeat). If its his so called tasteful playing and not his technical ability that so impresses you, then you could talk about a gillizllion other bassists that lack that ability but play "tasteful" lines, just like he does. Nobody would know who BIlly Sheenan was if he couldn't sherd like he does he just be another faceless studio guy and you wouldn't think to bring up his name.

I know all about Mr Big (did i not descirbe them perfectly?), and they where only big because they made completely generic hard rock, with occasional extended wank solos, which they eat up in Japan. Marty Friedman gets on daytime TV over there for fucks sake.

Bruhs, pick your guitars based on how easy it plays and how stable it is, THEN consider aesthetics.

So on a regular American Strat, is it possible to set the bridge at the angle whereby its completely flush with the body, making it impossible to pull up but possible to pull down?

Would doing so make it easier to downtune?

Like the other anon said it's George Benson style. As mentioned in this kick-ass article, written by Tuck Andress in 1999:

http://www.tuckandpatti.com/pick-finger_tech.html#1.1.8

It's not that people can't do it. It's just that it can take some time to master. (It took me 6 months to change grip and incorporate elbow motion mechanic.)
>>
>>61544196
Oh, forgot to say that if I had to pick an important Jaco contribution, it would be the popularization of the fretless bass. He wasn't really an innovator in that because he copied it from other guys but he could be called a pioneer.
>>
>>61543842
>and all he did was wank. How the hell is that good?
No he didn't. I think the problem here is you just don't like his music, or you don't like jazz, and so when Jaco does speedy 16th notes, its "wank", but if Sheenan does it, its fine. And Sheenan has exactly the same soloing style no matter who he's on stage with, because thats all he's known for. Those rapid bursts of notes Jaco does are very much an idiom in Jazz, and can therefore be considered tasteful in the context of he fusion bands he was in. Besides that, there are plently of tracks Jaco plays on where he is very much in the background, not to mention his own Word Of Mouth album features many tracks totally devoid of any bass playing that is remotely techinally advanced. Your "all he did was wank" claim is horseshit. But you're probably 16 and only know about how popular Mr Big are in Japan.
>>
>>61543953
So all I got to do is to make the bridge parallel to the body, and it won't have room to pull up right, effectively blocking it?

What the fuck

There is more wank in the first minute than in Jacos entire career. Its exteremly boring unless you're impressed by the technique.

Every Sheenan solo is a variation on the same template, the tapping, the dive bomb, the rapid fire 3 finger gallop, harmonics thrown in everywhere, all as fast as he can go. Its funny though, because its highly likely that Sheenan got that right hand artifical harmonic technique from Jaco.

First acoustic, had it for a bit. Took it camping, unfortunately it does have a little tiny bit of damage but its not structural damage. Small chip.

Took it to GC, the guy at the counter was rocking a thick, thick mustache, probably in his sixties at the time, he told me about stringing an acoustic, showed me how, and introduced me to brass coated strings and thicker dunlop picks (Tortex green .88mm). He got me a new pick guard, repaired my old tuners (the gear inside one was cracked and another was loose), polished up my epiphone and gave it new life.

Posted my (not working) Laguna a few threads back. Saving up for a new amp and electric.

I can't do it because " you just have pleb ears that arent used to anthing outside the small harmonic box they've been brought up in"

You've made it clear several times now that what makes Jaco's playing wank and Sheenans not is your own aversion to dissonance.

I dont need you to post stu hamm and dave elleson, i'm more than familar with them. When you describe them as "meaningful" and "Musical", you're really just using bullshit terms to say "i like how it sounds more". There's nothing inherently less wanky about them than anything Jaco did.

But why would it be more desirable? For sure the Momose Flying V (or the Bacchus Classic) is preferable to the 2016 Gibson Flying V if just for the aesthetics, but the Explorer is more of a tough decision. Part of the price difference is offset by the hardshell case but of course it's not that much of a difference since you can get an Epiphone case for $90.

We established that long ago as the sole reason that you proclaim Jaco to be wank. You're a jackass and you have the pussy ears of a small child who can't handle atonality.

shitty practice amp, squier standard strat, some old acoustic (tenada or something), some cheapass bass, and some shitty as hell strat ripoff that I basically just fuck around with to help me understand the wiring of gutiars/how to do setups etc.

>post desired gear
tele pickup for my strat and a vox ac30.

>how long have you been playing?
about 8 months

>fav guitars?
I've used a handful of guitars (epiphones, gibsons, a handful of others) and I like the bridge and necks on strats the most, as well as the sound.

>fav guitarists?
in no specific order: bo madsen, buckethead, john dwyer, Wata from boris, kurt cobain, kevin shields and I guess I like jimi hendrix.

>Projects?
well, I made it a little project to learn full songs, I think it might help me work on my songwriting skills, also playing with people, trying to break out of playing blues-ish stuff when I improvise, because as much as I don't mind blues it's boring and feel unoriginal, the problem is it's so east to play blues sounding things.

so, does anyone have any advice for making original riffs and stuff, I've started using the higher frets and doing lots of sliding and other pointless shit which is helpful in which it makes my stuff sound better In my opinion.

Jaco and Sheehan is the new rondomusic meme in a different shell. Something that's ultimately inoffensive and is based on people's opinions but one person who loves it and another on the opposite side shit up yet another thread because they think they are so important and their opinion is right.

I can't wait until winter break is over so I can neet it up during work hours on weekdays when the threads aren't so fucking annoying to read.

This is coming from someone who likes Jaco and rondomusic. Just stfu about it. People like it and other people dont. It's not a big deal.

Man I wish the Americans would fucking go to sleep already instead of ruining it for the rest of the world.

By the way if I was looking for a decent tele in the $1000-$2000 AUD range where would I be looking, would prefer at least a humbucker in the bridge rather than having to route it to fit one, not just Fender as well any brand would do fine. if it has a trem like a OFR that'd be a plus too I guess.

Never said I agreed with them. I like them, I just don't think they are on par with obviously better made instruments. They are as good as anything in their price range. I'm just saying people on two extremes are both retarded for arguing about it on an anonymous forum where you definitely aren't going to convince someone of anything.

Shit I just realized everything I'm typing is also being done in vain and I'm as bad as them

lel, those kinds are the worst. And I say this as a bassist.
Lead bass CAN be good, but more often than not it's not. It's great for rockabilly and some kinds of metal (think Lemmy, although he was far from a traditional bassist).
