The ratings thing on MA annoys me, it seems to work out that anything below 75%i is shite.
>>
>>61543222
Ratings are always arbitrary. Just go off of the subjective description and the taste of the reviewer in question.
>>
>>61543222
that community is so shit, most of the reviews are either 90 or greater or like 10. not to mention how the admins arbitrarily deem artists not metal if they don't like them
>>
The last mayhem release was not terrible.
>>
>>61542253

No Hanneman, but Gary Holt is pretty based.

Also, Surgical Steel was great.
>>
>>61543490

I agree, but most of the songs were mediocre/forgettable. Ordo Ad Chao was pretty good.

Mayhem peaked with Live at Leipzig.
>>
>>61543561
Surgical Steel was fucking great, but if you're really into the grindier carcass you might not like it.
Repentless was, well, okay. Slayer tends to generally put out okay albums. Never really terrible, but never better than good or okay. I did like the title track and it's video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjb0j9l1sz4
>>
>>61543630

>Slayer tends to generally put out okay albums. Never really terrible, but never better than good or okay.

I assume you're talking about post-'90 Slayer.

Hell Awaits and Reign in Blood are top-tier thrash.
>>
>>61543222
>>61543256
>>61543270
I almost never trust reviews over 90 or under 10. Unless I know the reviewer already (there's a few good ones on M-A who maintain a reasonable scale).

By far the biggest problem with that site is tryhard wannabe comedians who lather their "critiques" with shitty jokes, tired metaphors, and grating hyperbole/profanity. OzzyApu and BastardHead come to mind.
>>
>>61543714
well yeah obviously
I guess i should have said slayer these days
>>
>>61543222
And on RYM anything below 3 is shite.
>>
>>61543731
I thought OzzyApu was alright from the reviews I've read.

But yeah the worst reviewers are those that imitate UltraBoris and try to bash stuff with bad jokes and the like.

I dunno; I don't see anything inherently
wrong with mostly giving out high scores. I don't think it's fair to expect people to review stuff they find mediocre.
>>
>>61542400
early Bodom imo senpai

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJeBiNd9Cjk
>>
>>61543837
Well I may be biased due to his (Apu's) utterly shit taste, but he just comes off as the kind of guy no one liked in middle/high school despite constant attempts at humour. And yeah, UltraBoris is kept on the Archives mostly for historical value. He's a very limited reviewer and completely drops the ball when faced with anything other than thrash or 70s/80s metal.

>I don't think it's fair to expect people to review stuff they find mediocre.
True, there's some inevitable bias. Most people aren't going to feel inspired to write a 70% review, or whatever "average" is on that site.

>drafting up my plot to my series of short stories

>First story follows the MC (Cole) leading an unsuccessful resistance against an alien race hell bent on destroying Earth. THe Moon is crashed into the Earth and humanity is wiped out, Cole survives because he is saved by an alien race

Second story
>Cole, who is cursed with immortality because of the Alien tech messing with his DNA, searches the Universe for a way to time travel back. He tries to revive his best friend based on a tooth he has, but it creates an elditch monstrosity, he is forced to kill, making him the only human EVER.

Third story
>PUNISHED Cole is now working as an illegal weapons dealer, while training and meditating. Gets asked by a black market guy to save this alien dude's daughter from space niggers. He saves her and becomes leader of their army.

FINAL Story
>400 years later
>Cole has now united multiple solar systems and leads the largest army of all time. But the alien race that wiped out Earth has returned, millions of times stronger than imagined. Cole leads an assault on the race's homeplanet, a giant metal cube. The assault fails and Cole fights his way to the center.

Anyone have any earplug recommendations?
I'm gonna see 4 shows within 2 weeks, and am a little worried about my ears exploding. I never wore earplugs to a show, but i'm a little anxious thinking about the shows. The last few I went to I was able to get to the front and looked around at the people around me, of which everyone was wearing ear plugs. I have only sustained like a day of ringing max after a concert, but I kinda don't wanna push my luck anymore.

I've seen some interviews and live perfomances and I believe she does listen to different kinds of music. Her father likes classic rock and most of her former band mates were into rock and metal even by the looks of them. She had pretty heavy show with def leppard. Nice choice, but I don't think I'd put that as my number 1 folk album. Maybe a Falkenbach album or something.

Or Cry to Me River. Or Askival's album.

It's surprisingly good, expected them to have lost what made them sikth especially with the first teaser they released but this is way better than I expected. I hope they release more stuff.

>>61547631
o-oh ;_;
>>
>>61547661
being gimmicky doesn't necessarily mean being unenjoyable

the same goes for being vapid except what is/isn't vapid is subjective
>>
>>61547709
I'm admittedly not familiar with them, but most of what I've heard has not sounded particular interesting to me. I think it's probably just they don't really sound sonically that Japanese and follow western trends to closely for my taste. For example, you can compare them to a lot of 90s jrock bands or some contemporaries and the style is pretty different.
>>
>>61547751
But I said "vapid and gimmicky." In the context, gimmicky is bad because I'm implying that there's nothing to their music other than the costume stuff. Vapid is pretty much a criticism in nearly all possible contexts. Obviously this is all subjective, but I think Ghost is terrible because there is almost nothing to their music. They don't write good riffs or solos. They do generic verse-chorus with very little worthwhile musically (and they aren't even that catchy imo).

I'm the guy who think Ghost sucks, but it basically is. I mean you could say something like more simple songs = more vapid, but I think one good riff has far, far more worth than a complicated song full of half-baked ideas.

>>
>>61547956
if it isn't subjective then being vapid isn't a bad thing. for example earth 2 might be objectively vapid in one sense of the word, yet a lot of people will cite it as a masterpiece and among their favourite albums
>>
>>61547996
>one good riff has far, far more worth than a complicated song full of half-baked ideas
This is one huge reason why I can't stand Dream Theater.
>>
>>61548038
DT isn't really that complicated most of the time desu. A lot of the time it's just filler chords and chugging. I'd honestly like more if they really did just wank all of the time.
>>
>>61548070
same here
their technical skill is impressive but they don't show it off as much as detractors claim. not nearly as fun as Watchtower or what have you

>>
>>61548296

>>
lol ELiz

first off, how did you find that Cold Night for Alligators album, i literally just put it on the database

second of all, you could have made so many criticisms of that mechina album that were correct and you chose ones that don't make sense. they do relate the symphonics and cyber elements to the chugs and that's why they're better than other similar acts like Xerath. also the autotuned clean vocals aren't anything close to generic djent vocals
>>
>>61548168
The first one is really good too, but they really polished their sound on the second one imo. They have some appended twisted and dissonant riffs that make me think of Kenose or SMRC iirc and, well, the use of dissonance in general. What's cool is that it's just one facet of their sound, they're far from a DsO worship band. I also got a couple of orthodoxy notes in the debut as well. Really great band, and the lyrics/subject matter is also neat.

>but idk if i can think of anything more embarrassing than a band being named manbearpig
Probably the 4th band in the collage named after what I can only assume is the Disney Movie. That Manbearpig EP is pretty nice, some catchy melodic hardcore from the UK.
>>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvX8T_JCCGc

I love this EP a lot, used to listen to it back in the day. They incorporate some melodeathy riffs with the scene poppy melodic flare and it just gets me going lmao. Shame that they scrapped that later on and went for a more pop-punk/rock approach. Btw more pop metalcore bands desperately need to have more open hi-hat disco beats.
