What genre will overtake the dying genre of hip hop/rap the same way grunge music overtook hair metal in 91?
SYNTHPUNK REVIVAL THE JAM OF 2016 YOOOOOOOO
>>61494464
You tell me. The industry has no clue what and when can happen and just keeps pumping money in mainstream hip-hop.
The thins is when grunge came to kill hair metal (and huge part of the 80s in general) it overtly opposed it and made it instantly uncool and outdated. In current Murika nobody will dare to do the same thing to hip-hop because that would be ZOMG RACIST.
I don't think any serious change will happen until the end of the 10s at least, sadly.
Hip hop isn't dying. When it does rock might make a resurgence, or it could be a genre that hasn't been invented yet.
>>61494664
>thing*
J00s are already trying to sabotage the discussion, damn.
>>61494464
Don't you mean trap? Trap is to hip hop as hair metal is to rock. Hair metal was killed by grunge, and now we need something to kill trap.
>>61494664
They already did try killing disco (and other black music genres), and we got house and techno out of that.
R&B revival
it's already happening
>>61494464
Nothing. Hip hop already has this growing pop rap/edm shit thats been hitting the mainstream lately.
as popular as edm is. drake/weeknd's mixture of pop/rap still dominates. it's embedded in our culture too much to become dead. especially in america, As Long as meme slang like "lit" and family and what comes next become viral fast. hip hop will stay
PC MUSIC is still too weird to ever takeover
I feel like R&B will take over soon
>>61494728
THIS
I give trap another year maybe if nothing new comes up.
>>61494755
Anon, it's time.

Feels bad that these guys haven't fully taken off yet
>>61494464
trip-hop/ psychedelic hip hop
second wave post-grunge revival
>>61495158
>trip hop
It tried in the mid to late 90s in England and it was relatively popular in America for club music/whatever Madonna or Janet Jackson wanted to use. Although Gorillaz tried lengthening it up until Plastic Beach.
>>61495141
Yeah, I thought they were gonna blow up when they appeared on Arsenio.
>>61494464
no wave revival
>>61494728
>>61494786
Stop talking about trap music and it'll fuck off into drug-riddled obscurity and inhabit the same hole in the earth every other trend-genre of electronic music has. Trap really isn't as big of a staple of modern music culture as everybody likes to pretend
>>61495158
/thread
Faces, Acid Rap, Art of Duality (arguably not trip-hop), Angry Kid, Solace. Psychedelic hip hop is taking over.
Grunge again
Cudi is bringing it back
It will have to be something women can do as well as men because IT'S 2016 GUYS COME ON
in other words, nothing of quality
Music that isn't top 40 radio pop will slowly but surely stop being a thing altogether.
>>61495975
Ok white guy. Let us know more about the future of an African-American dominated genre...
>>61496451
>I was born in LeRon jimmeration amirite xDDDD
Blues will become top 40

Hi there!
You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!
Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bait to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

No. "The music is dying/is dead" meme is an ever circulating meme and nothing more.
What's true and disappointing is the fact that you can't even see any possible major interesting changes in the mainstream and semi-mainstream music on the horizon right now. Everything is really stale and will stay that way because labels themselves won't risk dismantling the industry based on rap and rap-associated acts that works like a charm in thoroughly cuckified Murrika of today.
>>61494464
An angrier and less glamorous style of rap.
>>61494464
Hip Hop has at least 30 more years to grow before it experiences the death by a thousand sub genres we see in rock today.
>>61494786
trap isn't new though
trapping ain't dead
probably grime or some shit
>>61494736
R&B never left.
a red headed man will ride in from the east on an iron horse on his coattails will ride a thousand glory thirsty mongols to trample all in its wake
>>61497224
i hope not
last thing we need is more black power horseshit that every music publication is morally obligated to praise like the beatles
>>61494664
>nobody will dare to do the same thing to hip-hop because that would be ZOMG RACIST.
then we need a group of black guys or at least a group with a black frontman to lead the new genre as nirvana did in the 90s
then they need to die at 27 to cement the change in society
>>61496487
We can dream
AJJ's next album will be top 40

folk punk will be the grunge of the 2010s

Go to bed Jeremy Mathematics.
Well, hair metal to grunge was a swing of that pop music pendulum that goes back and forth between subversive/earnest/unhappy and affirmative/insincere/happy. And I'm not sure that simple, cause-and-effect model really holds true anymore. The internet has made tastemakers out of everyone, and musical ideas that were previously inaccessible to the casual listener are now accessible. More than ever before (and even before it was a lot), people are pressured and enabled to carefully curate their own identities, and since everyone outwardly wants to be seen as an individual, older styles are repurposed and combined into new configurations constantly. The line between black culture and white culture is particularly being blurred (e.g., how many white pop singles today have features from rappers, or vice versa? How many were like that 10-15 years ago?).
So my point is, I think we're just about done with these massive stylistic swings in pop music and we're getting closer to a more kaleidoscopic, collaged pop landscape where the trends pop up faster, don't stick around as long, and blend into each other more.
>>61495158
so you mean the new wave of trip-hop, because guys like portishead just arent around anymore.
>>61496538
Worst tripfag right now.
Filtered.
>>61494464
Nah, hair metal already was dead in 1990
>>61496475
tell me more
>>61495821
I have no idea what it's even supposed to be.
Hip hop/rap will never die. It's a whole subset of music in a different way than genres normally differ. It doesn't focus on melodic vocals, it's rapping vocals. It will evolve forever, but comparing it to hair metal is misleading because metal and rock both evolved, they never died.
Hip hop has evolved so much since Rapper's Delight and it will keep doing so, I would bet money that it won't die within the the next 35 years. People will not stop enjoying rapped vocals.

>he thinks being indian makes him more qualified to assess the future of hip hop than black people or really anyone else

Ebm Industrial revival, but this time we're actually living in the technological future instead of pretending too
The polar opposite of hip-hop, of course.
>>61495821
It kinda is man. I'd say trap and edm are pretty much the main staples of pop music now.

i agree, but not for much longer, weve had hip hop as a main stay in charts since about 2011, and its not even what it used to be, e.g trap,

This. What killed hair metal pop rock? Grunge rock? What will kill trap rap? Some other kind of rap.
Just because your itunes library has 15 different subgenres of rock and only one rap album (Marshall Mathers LP), doesn't mean rap is one unified genre.
>>61502114
>we've had rap as a mainstay since 2011
Meanwhile the top 40 was dominated by rock music for damn near fifty years.
Buckle up buckaroo.
>>61502186
Even before. DMX, 50, Em, Ja Rule went platinum a lot.
Fucking Chingy went platinum.
>>61494464
What the fuck you mean "dying genre"? This was probably hip hops best year ever.

Hip hop isn't going to die, it'll just mutate into other things slowly over time. I mean, it's already done that a few times. As far as pop music goes, R&B will always be the main shit being sold to people, it's basically always been that way.
>>61495158
Angry Kid was honestly so fucking good
