You can be the best DJ ever, you're going to get nowhere without a solid networking game.
Start talking to the resident DJs at clubs you go to, build rapport over a few months then start hinting that you would like a few opportunities.
Also once you know some one well enough ask them if you can send them a mix for them to give you feedback on.
I was lucky enough to be asked for a mix the first time I met a resident at my fav club. A couple of months later I got my first set there

In my city the older DJs that hold residencies are quite introverted, but pretty much all of the young guys trying to earn their worth are extroverted/overly enthusiastic.
It's sad but you can easily be a popular DJ that plays Beatport top 10.
And if you want to play the 'cooler' clubs you just shazam the a DJs tunes and base your sets around them (Plenty of these fuckwits where I live)

It also comes down to whether you're given the opportunity to play your best. Most of my early gigs were gigs that didn't allow me to play the music I wanted (Commercial warmup sets, bar gigs, background noise stuff) but I got my first residency after I was given a good set time in a good club and people got to experience my true music taste.
Lots of people get into DJing without giving a shit about the music or the skill/knowledge behind it. I don't know why and they're my most hated type of person in this industry.

Resident Advisor will host a party at fabric in London on Saturday, February 27th. RA is taking over rooms one and two, with a cast of DJs and live acts dishing out techno of different hues.
In room one, Rodhad, Objekt and fabric resident Craig Richards will DJ, with Vrilski —AKA Vril and Voiski — performing live. The second room will be headlined by Function, who we featured in our Art Of DJing series in 2015. Ilian Tape duo Zenker Brothers and Amsterdam favourite Sandrien will also get behind the decks, while Headless Horseman is performing live.
