I don't think happens in the way you think it does very often, "I don't listen to much electronic music" is the same as "I don't listen to much rock music" and that's normally the sense in which the term is used. It's also not incorrect to label a breakcore song as electronic for the same reason, if the individual doesn't know the correct term it makes sense to go up a few levels and use the umbrella term. Same as if someone just called Nirvana and The Jesus Lizard rock without knowing that they were grunge and noise rock respectively. It isn't wrong to give less information than is possible and you probably come across as a dick to people if you haven't learned that simple fact yet.
