serious question: what's the point of spending so much money on records?

the big album artwork is cool, but you only look at the liner notes like once, it's a pain changing sides/records per album, the sound is objectively worse...

I'm not trolling or anything...I just got into records this fall, but recently realized that it was a pain in the ass, and a waste of time and money. Gonna start selling them off soon.

Also, is my cart riding low?
>>
>>61450522
I know what you're talking about, this right:
http://buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/c540794605

It was initially $350, but only had 8 bids. Ended $609 without service fee or shipping I'm guessing with shipping and Buyee shit it's probably like another $50 with the weight, service fee international shipping, and double domestic shipping. After searching for over a year and a half, I honestly don't think it'll ever be available for under $500 online because of how sought after it is. Especially not mint.

>>61450686

>>
>>61450851
Slightly, but more importantly it's at a wrong angle, AT carts need higher elevation at the end of the arm.

some Elektra repressing. hows that 180 gram sound?
>>
>>61450977
I make about $500 a month most of the year.

>>61450981
Neither. You either should somehow reduce the height of the mount at the carts end, or raise the the base of the arm at the opposite end (possible for an example on SL-1200 and other better tables). It's not critical but iirc AT recommends an angle of about 20 degrees. Yours seems to be in a range of 0-5 or so, hard to tell.

Posting in a thread "one less nig" and being pointed to /pol/ it was only for a day tho

>>61450390
It's not exactly practical, but that's kind of what makes it fun. The collector mentality is a big part of it, though, because it's just enjoyable to be looking for an album and get the thrill of finding it. Some people don't have that excitement about it, though, and that's not wrong either - there are many different ways to enjoy music. I personally love the hunt for it and being involved in the music when I go to switch sides and put the needle down, but it's not for everyone
>>
>>61450390
>serious question: what's the point of spending so much money on records?

I'm more of a thrift store/dollar record collector, and built up a huge collection when LPs were dead and CDs dominated (and got stupidly expensive at 18.99). Back then, you could get records for as cheap as 25 cents at thrift stores/flea markers. I also got a lot of my collection for free from people unloading their own collections.

The reason I haven't sold off my collection is because most of the LPs I have sound much better than their digital equivalents that have been ruined by shitty Loudness War mastering techniques.

As for new releases, I can't really speak on that, but for many people, vinyl is simply a more fun/engaging medium. You also get a digital download code with most new releases, so you get the best of both worlds.
>>
>>61451070
Actually sorry, I remembered a bit wrong, it's pretty close, but I'd raise the base of the arm up a bit regardless.

>>61450390
It's an investment. I mostly try to look for good deals on records. My collection's value is about $14,000, but I have actually spent on it considerable less. Also the idea of collecting something just appeals to me. If it doesn't to you, then I can't help you. I don't understand buying new records straight from retailers though, I only buy used and second hand.
>>
>>61450953
It's stuff from a short-lived French label and original pressings are almost non-existent
>>
>>61451070

Thanks so much anon, you're completely right. Once I adjust my tonearm's height, will the cart ride a little higher.

I'm worried that the cantilever suspension is fucked.
>>
>>61451081

>>
>>61451197
Eh? BYG isn't exactly hard to find for the most part. I have several of their originals in good condition and at most I've spent on them has been maybe $30-40 a piece, but usually around 20. Come on, son.

>>61451209
Looks fine to me. It's maybe a tad low but I wouldn't worry about it if it sounds fine. How much are you tracking it with?

Drive safe Fishmans

I really want that Rammstein box set btw... too expensive though
>>
>>61451257
Oh wait nvm I was thinking of the wrong label that had also hosted some Don Cherry pressings.

I don't have any original BYG pressings but I have a few Blue Note and Prestige original pressings, as well as other odds and ends
>>
>>61451257

I'm tracking it at the recommended 1.4 grams(1-1.8g).

I'm just nervous that it looks so close to the record.
Its an AT440MLb cart so I don't want destroy my new semi expensive cart. I just wanna make sure my cantilever suspension is okay as I can make an exchange for another before Jan 31st.

It does sound alright to me. Just like to hear other anon's opinions.

I have a few original Blue Notes as well. Nothing from Prestige though, they're very rare here in northern europe. My personal favorite is ECM. Loads of amazing music from one of jazz's golden ages mixed with wonderful european influences. And most of their records can relatively easily be found for $10-15 in excellent condition, or even less. Still looking for their first release though, that one fetches a bit more... one of my favorite albums though: http://www.discogs.com/sell/release/1515708?ev=rb

What label were you thinking of?

>>61451370
>>61451387
1.4 is more than alright, even quite light I'd say. My 150MLX is I think at 1.8g or so (iirc its upper recommendation is 2 grams). I don't notice much difference but I feel a good contact with the groove makes it behave closer to like it should. From the second picture yours looks just fine, no different from mine.
>>
>>61451474

Your opinion much appreciated anon. I can rest easy now.

What kind of table do you run that 150MLX on?
I had my eye on it but I've read on other forums that the 440MLa/b is the upper bounds of carts that should be on a beginner table like LP120.
>>
>>61451474
I forget the name of it, but they had worked with BYG at some point to record a few free jazz artists
It's on the tip of my tongue

Also, ECM are pretty great. Have one or two originals from them as well

I have an SL-1200 MK2, one of the last copies produced, purchased some time after it was discontinued. I prefer the direct write design to the traditional belt systems. Of course something like Linn LP12 would be nice too, but to me there's nothing wrong with the Technics. The cart is by far the most important part of any setup (along with speakers obviously), so as long as the table has a good arm (which the 1200 does), you're set. I should invest in a proper preamp though.

LP120 is a very decent table too. I don't think there's an upper bound for any table really though. You can always upgrade the table and keep the cart. Of course if you're just exploring and not sure how much you're going to invest in the hobby it's better not go overboard. The 440MLa is an excellent mid-level cart, great for beginners. The ATs track superbly and are pretty much the best around for their price. They do have some annoying characteristics of course, but the accuracy on tracking and lack of distortion is just too damn lucrative...

>>
>>61452013
I haven't owned it personally, but from what I know it sounds pretty decent, but doesn't track too well and suffers especially from inner-groove distortion. It's not a slouch, but I wouldn't get one myself, especially as I currently reside one or two price classes higher. So, I guess that depends on your budget. Isn't the AT95E like $75 cart and the 2M Red about a hundred? Doesn't sound like much of an upgrade.

When you work at a record store, sometimes you're importing a record, realize it's cheap, and just say "can i just buy this now?" and the boss man says sure.

Oh yes.

I posted my last get in the last thread, so here's what I'm currently listening to.

Going to pick up the new Tame Impala album tonight. Listened to it with my friend and fell in love with it.

Also looking to grab I Love You Honeybear if they have it.
