yeah but I tend not to rate favourites because my opinion of them changes all the time. I mainly just use it to remember what I've listened to.

Reposting cause meme flood.
Listened to Daughter's new album. I remember discovering them a few years ago when crescendocore and dream pop were my favorite genres.
They've got this cliche alternative sound but Elena's voice makes it more interesting. The album has some really creative production, too bad that the songwriting relies on the formula of writing a hook based on some basic chords. If only they could use some jazz influences or made more interesting structures, this would be a really great album. Oh, and the lyrics are pretty tumblr-core.
__
I tried to listen to OG Maco's new mixtape. I tried to. I couldn't make it 'till the end so I ended up after 2 tracks. The production is good but the monotonous vocal delivery and the cheap synths make this record awful. It's quite uninspired.
__
Also finally listened (twice) to Krallice's new EP. It's brilliant! And I think it's time for me to revisit some of their albums because their sound has grown on me. The drum work is astonishing and the precise playing is really enjoyable. Atmospheric, dark, ending with some swirly synths. A very strong release.
Does someone have an idea for filling up the chart?
>Hella - Hold Your Horse Is
It's math rock that occasionally gets a bit noise rock-ish. There's not really much to it, I'm not a big fan of math rock so it's not really for me. Intro track is kinda shit.
What's next? Preferably something short

young buck - buck the world, recommended by dogwander
if not memorable, it is all you would expect: a consistent, all-around alright, serviceable black ambient record, dunno what there would even be to say. a lil much too dry maybe, whatever that means. the singer from linkin park was featured
vert - small pieces loosely joined, recommended by ricebeansandegg
this in a way exceeded my low expecations. unimpressive piano playing, unimpressive tunes, wimpy synths, though it did grow on me a couple as it went on, i got that its trying to draw you in with and to subtle details, the way something like onkyo works, and THEN come in with the closer's relatively loud contrast. i kinda liked the extended ending ambient loop aswell. but it wasnt that great
rice wins, i guess

wait, so I got removed from the tourney?
Almost done with 808 State.
State To State
808 State makes Big beat.
It was only released to the fan club for a good reason, I'd say.
Don Solaris
808 State makes leftfield house.
It works a lot better than expected.
Perhaps at this point they were getting tired of the Future Sounds of the Orb going furether than they have and americans going back to the grit of their Chicago roots while the european scene was spinning out of control with raveculture becoming always bigger, louder and obnoxious. Hence Don solaris.
Simply put, this is Shpongle before Shpongle. 808 State builds over the base they are familiar with once again but this time trade the continuity of live-inspired house music to follow a different type of segmentation and focus on creating a stream of moments instead of a continuous flow. the album constantly changes its tones and colours while managing to keep a continuity thanks to a certain unity in the technical aspects that make the variety of samples fit together through their format (with the exception of Lopez which I'm pretty convinced was only there to make sure some singles would sell).
>>61434628
Thermo Kings
Remember how Don Solaris was all about pushing the frame of 808s' house music and encompassing always more sounds and influences? This thing right here has everything you need to satisfy your remix needs, and it goes the opposite way. Based, for the most part, on the singles of the Don Solaris era, it follows the opposite route and goes from several forms of electronic music and incorporates the textures of Don Solaris into these specific patterns and formulas, at least for the parts provided by 808s themselves going back to classic house (with the opening Joyrider remix or the ver north-american Balboa) ,or other things, curtesy of several guests that will range from drum and bass to, well, whatever it is that Brian Eno did redoing Lopez.
Outpost Transmission
Well, that was odd. This is the album no one rememberss and it's not hrd to see why as it has little to do with what the band might have gotten us used to. even if the production style and methrs have varied as well as the sources, 808 has always kept a certain rythmic focus and aestheti i ntheir sound. This is the part where they do something completely different. at this point we are closer to psychedelic electronics as psytrance will show a couple years later. The idea of movement now exists on a longer scale and momentum is stretched along tracks themselves and across the album as well. The composition is much less direct than it used to be and the result is a somewhat blurry ensemble with some fairly high points and some terrible lows (starting with the opener itself). Overall this album has its share of surprises but is vastly unequal in quality and attention, which is a shame as some of the more far-reaching moments and atmosphere buildups show some great promises that are never completely fulfilled.
isn't it my turn to rec an album for the listenalong?

>Brian S. Cassidy - Alpine Seas
you know those god awful songs that play durring car commercials with xylophones and clapping and some white indie fuckboys chanting in the background? basically this album is a collection of the lead ins to those songs, with just the solo guitar and voice, before it gets really shitty.
maybe add in a splash of Songs: Ohia as well idk.
what this album lacks in variety it makes up for in sincerity. it felt like an actual human being was singing this to me. the production was also excelent, though that did take away from some of the rawness i normally like in folk.
i'm shocked how much i didn't hate this record.

Last things about 808 State and then I swear I'll sto talking about music nobody gives a shit about.
State To State II
More unreleased tracks, this time from all sorts of live sessions and radio interventions apparently.
Nothing too special here, just your usual bunch of loud remixes, nothing you wouldn't find in the two bucks create of a record store.
Prebuild
A bunch of tracks that didn't make the cut to Newbuild.
And it shows.
An interesting listenin retrospect, but once again,it's nothing really exceptionnal.
all things considered, I don't think anyone gives a shit about the following either.
>>61436940
1024mb - Gigabyte
A concept album about being inside a computer by youtube-dwelling musician Leslie Wai.
If I remember correctly and am not getting mixed up with other things, this thing was propelled to its minute of e-fame thanks to an 8-bit style video that got some coverage on a couple blogs. The song "The Glitch", sounded fun at the time so I grabbed the whole thing.
And I must say, after going through 808 State, god damn does this thing sound clunky.
The main issue here is how little moderation there is in composition and mixing. we are dealing with your average electro-house style music that tries to induce some spectacular movements thanks to loud layers of synths over loud layers of synths, all of this backed by your mandatory theatic 8 to 16 bits basslines and whe I suspect is for the mot part a beat played on an electronic drumset. the formula is simple and not necessarly flawed but the execution is not exactly tasteful as most of the track overload themselves by being too segmented to have more movement and keep the listened busy at all times, and by having simply too much going on without any reason or contributing to any effect. the overall loudness does not help at all and makes most of the rythmic lines and backings feel very flat if not plain weak compared to the global crushing force of the rest of the digital instrumentation.
Not the best thing ever, pretty much what you would expect from something released exclusively on youtube...

How has your day been daily? I was at the theater and saw Bergman's Fanny & Alexander. It was great, enjoyed it a lot more than when I saw the film.
>Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
Really enjoyed this one. Brittish prog rock that doesn't sound anything like the other anglo prog of the mid 70's. The second half was really something else though, where Alifie sounds like something that could have been on a C93 record, Wyatt even sounds like Tibet vocally, intimidating stuff.
It did feel quite short though and I was a bit surprised when it just ended. It felt like there was even more room to explore and it didn't end up feeling as grandiose as I had assumed it would be. It felt like it was a missing a finale somehow.
Great record though, I can definitely see why it's so acclaimed.

titus andronicus kinda, they've got that same americana-ish rootsy punk sound.
Quite pleased with this one's dynamic range. Definitely not the kind of fuddy duddy dream pop where the band cowers behind the smudges of effects and does nothing. This employs atmosphere in a smart and engaging way, shifting and ever moving and staying fresh, with equal parts large-scale wallop and glossy dreaminess. 6/10

Just fucking revelatory. Aggressive, performed /incredibly/ well, anxious, tense, dark, powerful, melodic, dissonant, avant-garde, so many adjectives to describe this thing. Doctor Came At Dawn felt too melodramatic for me. Julius Caesar is what I wanted Daniel Johnston to be, lo-fi shitty songs that are sung with a ton of emotion
Strawberry Rash and Stick In The Mud just make me feel stuff
>>61439351
they probably all are

Have you heard any other of his albums? Feels like the kind of stuff you'd dig

I might have to relisten to it. Your Wedding is a great song.
I have When I said I wanted to be your dog and night falls over kortedala, they're excellent. i'm really hype on tomorrow
>>61442413
I don't care for the darker songs that much but I can see why you enjoyed that one if your a fan of The Doctor Came At Dawn. It's kind of similar to You Moved In.
You might like Knock Knock though!
Night Falls Over Kortedala is pretty good but I feel like there's something off about it. Can't quite say what though. I'd recommend Oh You're So Silent Jens, it's a pretty mixed bag of songs but you're guaranteed to like atleast some of it
I listened to the Tony Conrad release with Faust and, strangely enough, I didn't like it as much as I would expect. It was definitely good, but I felt like Tony Conrad's violin and Faust's rock grooves don't fit. I do like each element separately, don't get me wrong! Faust set a really cool groove in a typical manner for them with all these simple repetitive drum fills and powerful basslines. Conrad on the other hand reminded me of Henry Flynt's violin rural landscapes. The combination of these two worlds somehow take away from the hypnotism of the violin.
It's good, but I thought it would be more exciting (or rather more mesmerizing).
7/10
Since we're posting our January charts.
Mine did ok, both of those Jessica Pratt albums are in my top 10 atm, and Delaware is probably somewhere in the top 30-40 range.
I'm not sure what I listened to on the 31st btw. It was definitely something.
Will probably listen to The Goslings now.

Have you ever listened to Sewn to the Sky or Forgotten Foundation?
>>61443644
what genre is that album from the 7th

Nope, should I?
>>61443868
Drop Nineteens - Delaware
Extremely laid back indie rock/shoegaze. Recommended if you want to hang out with friends on a hot day in the 90s.
>>61443885
Almost definitely.
They're slightly more amateurish than Julius Caesar, and don't have as much heart, but Forgotten Foundation especially is the only Bill Callahan album that I think comes even remotely close to Julius Caesar.
>>61444031
I'll definitely check them out then, thanks for the rec! I've heard a lot of Callahan's other releases but nothing really comes close to Julius Ceasar and the only one I really enjoyed was Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
>>61444077
Hopefully you like them, as a lot of people tend not to. Both of their RYM averages are pretty grim.
Hopefully I didn't miss too many

haha okay. I think they are both on the same level and it's quite a cool concept if you consider how it relates to June and Jennifer Gibbons. I think that this is the strongest DG release but I try not to talk about it too much on here cause "le epic memes :^)"

Dick Gaughan & Andy Irvine - Parallel Lines (1982)
>celtic folk music, singer/songwriter
I don't particularly care for celtic folk music to begin with, and this is just a watered down version of celtic folk music, and its absolutely daft and forgettable. The vocals on this album sound like a parody, and the instrumentation is nothing to write home about, save for literally the last minute of the album. Not recommended.

Just googled this a lot, don't know how I didn't know this. if disc one wasn't very bad, I'd be listening to it right now.
>>61445468
girls don't listen to good music.

2bh, ever since I came across this girl I've been convinced that there are qt semi-depressed introverted musically-talented girls who I could relate with if only I knew where to meet them.

>if disc one wasn't very bad
I thought that too after two listens. It started to grow one me unbelievably and there are actually some great hooks hidden here and there. I was planning on making a string quartet transcription of NoTM in the future years. I think it would work out well since it's very complex if you dig into it
>>61445896
that said it'd probably be even harder to find qt gays with good taste tbqh

But at least one does exist, the video is evidence of that. How can you be so sure that there are no others?
>>61446164
>ambient, drone
i like drone, but not really ambient
i gotta ask, is it "actual drone" or is it somewhat minimalistic ambient like tim hecker
because the latter is not really my cup of tea
>>61446167
>King Krule
i did not like his s/t
it would be better not to pan it
we both would be happier like that
>The Goslings - Grandeur of Hair (2006)
With these types of longish, atmospheric albums, the first listen is pretty important for me, as how much I like the atmospheres and textures usually depends how often I'll come back to it. It's not the best idea to judge something so harshly after just one listen, but whatever.
With this first listen, I was just completely indifferent just about the whole time. I don't know. The whole Sunn 0))) playing shoegaze thing just didn't really seem that interesting. The concept was pretty cool in parts, i guess, and the drums were done really well, so I didn't completely hate it, but having said that I probably won't come back to it for at-least a couple of months.
The last track is pretty killer however.

I asked them all, turns out all they listen to is the radio and tumblr.
>>61446306
If you've heard Secret Abuse then it's a bit like that but softer. I'd say it leans more towards the Drone end of the spectrum than Ambient.
>>61446306
that's fair
try this, then. imagine you're in the tiny, smoke filled bar it was recorded in and listen for the patrons' clinking glasses throughout

>Eugene the Oceanographer - The Tigers of Mount Paektu (2015)
I liked the concept, ambient synth pop with traditional influences, but it's very amateurish, and none of these losers know how to sing.
The production is surprisingly decent, although it's like Eugene only had one good idea for a korean sounding synth pop beat, and tried to make a 20 minute EP out of it, this meant that the longer the EP went on, the less I cared about it. Still I listened to it mainly for the cover, so I guess it could have been a lot worse.

thanks again, s.
this album is some really well skilled, seemingly ahead of it's time (though, I guess a lot of jazz sounds that way) stuff. all the players are incredible. unfortunately, i'm not enjoying the styles they chose to play on this record. there's some wild freakouts on here, and I gravitate almost invariably towards cool jazz. still interesting, and not unenjoyable even to someone with my taste. i'm sure some of you would love this, i'll probably rec it in the future.

accurate. the guy himself stated that in producing this album he intended to create "a set of songs intended to function as cellphone ringtones" whatever the hell that means. anyways i think to some degree it's bad in a sarcastic way, like most vaporwave tends to be.
>>61447505
I've tried hard on at least three occasions to listen to more than 30 seconds of that album. I tried jumping around to different parts. Didn't help. The Wire put it as their #1 album for the year it came out so I feel like it deserves at least a full listen and a healthy pan. Maybe it'll brainwash me into liking it somehow.
Hey guy's. I'm new to daily, but I felt like joining in this month. Do I need a trip to participate, also is there a sticky or something I should read before joining? Anyways here's my chart for this month. A mix of catching up on essentials and some other things i've been recced.

Hi, no you don't need a trip, the only thing to do before joining is to get taste but not like that's going to happen.
Nice month, two records I like a lot on there plus a couple cool ones. I listened to Pass The Distance recently aswell and it's a treat if you care about Current 93 or Tibet.

Nice jungle that falls more on the ethereal side than the banging side. And frankly I prefer the banging side. What is jungle if yr speakers aren't blown out by bass at the end of the mix? Its still nice stuff though, when it gets going it /really/ gets going, but it just needs to get going more often.

What y'all doing?
Sven Libaek - Ron & Val Taylor's Inner Space (1973)
>television music, library music, lounge, jazz
I can very much appreciate the camp value of this record, and the Bill Evans-esque coolness and chillness of it, but as a whole its basically worthless. Sounds like it'd make a good soundtrack—and it probably does—but listened to on its own, attentively, its a slog. Some interesting and subdued drum work here, though.
