Turn up the heat and listen everything Chuck Schuldiner has ever recorded. The guy had a way with tunes. For some calmer, alternative bands, Tiamat is a good start I suppose. Wildhoney is a fucking masterpiece. I know these bands are way too obvious to give as an advice but no harm to take it as an excuse to start listening to them as soon as possible.

Certainly not Iron Maiden, that's for sure. Avoid all the NWOBHM, really. Metal only starts to get good when prog rock starts to suck (early 80s). I liked the bands Voivod and Coroner and uh... that's pretty much it. The bands with anything potentially musically interesting are going to be extreme metal bands like black, death, thrash, etc. That also means sitting through a lot of Cookie Monster/Tazmanian Devil/shrieking vocals. Don't avoid anything mate. There are reasons why some bands are so influential. The song Hallowed Be Thy Name alone is probably the reason some heavy metal bands even exist. Listen and decide for yourself.
