post an album you dont get and others explain what makes it so great
>>
the long gaps of silence make it extremely tense to listen to, it's like the equivalent of watching a good psychological horror film
>>
>>61398621
so what makes it great is not knowing what's going to happen next?

if so then wouldn't it only be good for one listen?

Have you never seen a horror movie worth seeing twice?

I thought this was a meme, seriously.
I think people actually believed it.

this album. what's so fucking great about it other than a /mu/tron recorded it?
>>
>>61399500
This album is by far not the most impressive progressive rock album of all time. It is by far not made by the most talented musicians of all time. I don't ever listen to it. However, if you don't listen to progressive rock, i.e. Rock that doesn't follow intro verse chorus format, this is a nice into album. So is brain salad surgery by Emerson Lake and Palmer. If you want a real prog album listen to Elektric Band by Chick Corea.

/mu/ didnt exist when this was recorded

the music and the meaning behind it are special

"Flood I is when the rain starts. The looping guitars show the rain picking up speed and density. The crashing drums are thunder and lighting: scarce, at first, but soon overwhelming. As the drums get harsher, the water begins to accumulate.

Flood II is when the water has gotten so high that you're floating a few inches off the ground. The relaxation and near nirvana you experience in this world of water is beautiful.

Flood III is when you've been floating for days. Hunger begins to strike. Your body is weak. You start to sink. Though you're able to stay somewhat afloat, the water soon overpowers you and you're struggling for air.

Flood IV is when you realize you're time to die has come. Your body grows lifeless as water is sucked into your lungs. It stings, but after some time you go numb. You're completely underwater, and sinking slowly. You'd hoped that your life would flash before your eyes, but you're so cold and numb that you can't think of anything. However, you are at peace. You watch as the sun begins to shine in the world above the water, and you feel secure as it slowly fades to nothing. Your eyes close, and you slip into eternal darkness - safe, and calm."

It combines the dirty grunge/feedback sound that was popular at the time with catchy melodies and personal/relatable lyrics. Even if you don't like it, it makes perfect sense why other people do
>>
>>61398592
Why did you put a green circle on it?

I'm not one who thinks it's great by the way. I think it's an interesting listen and certainly a worthy recording that explores the musical concepts of spontaneity and silence in an interesting dialectic. Sounds create silences between them, without the occasional bleep, bloop, scratch, etc we hear what we normally hear - the ambient noise of our surroundings, with those sounds we perceive the tension created in the spaces between them.

It's not something I enjoy listening to, Sachiko's sine waves can be quite painful to my ears, but I certainly think it's an interesting piece of contemporary, improvisatory sound art. It's easier to appreciate it less as a piece of music, and more like a piece of abstract expressionism in the visual arts, but one that arranges sound and silence in time - rather than one that arranges form and colour in space.

I don't think it's easy to listen to it, and think it's boring or even painful to listen to, and I certainly prefer other freely improvised music for precisely those reasons, however it's wrong to dismiss something which fails as a work of music, but which succeeds as a work of sound art.

Listen to more jazz and first half of the past century music. After that, listen to TMR once more, you'll find it surprisingly enjoyable.
You pleb.
>>
>>61401674
how is long season a meme?
>>
>>61401628
Just a solid progressive dub album that adds up to pretty much one song. it's like a long lonely season spent inside listening to the rain, the more time spent inside the more time you mentally become enveloped in your own thoughts and the sound of the rain. You start to see recurring patterns, this progression is reflected by that of the recurring lyrics and riffs throughout the whole album.

That's my interpretation, taking that away I just find it relaxing and musically enjoyable.
>>
>>61401730

It was a huge meme on RYM. Not as big here, though.
>>
>>61401651
A nice mixture of 2010s "indie" music and tremolo picking and vocals of black metal. It's overrated though so it's understandable that you don't really enjoy it.
>>
>>61401674

This >>61401732 is me

So if long season is a meme, I agree it's solid through and through

I really don't get Unknown Pleasures, I mean most of the songs are alright but there was way better stuff being made during the time

I feel like there's not a whole lot to "get" about this album, pretty straightforward. I can see why it might seem cheesy but I love it

sad that you can get trips but cant get suffy

You have to not be racist.

All memes aside, first listen was a 6 for me, but it grew to a 9 after a few listens and now it's a light 7 to strong 8. The repetition of the poem can be obnoxious, the Tupac skit at the end is the wackiest goddamn thing in recent memory, and there is some undeniably corny shit (How Much a Dollar Cost? is textbook 10th grade English writing prompt).

Other than those few things keeping it from being a 10, it's a solid album. Hopefully someone can explain to you why it's good better than I can.

Badbadnotgood is admittedly sloppy and can be kinda memey. There's a lot of playfulness and humor in it which still makes it an enjoyable listen. It encompasses the energy of a few young lions jamming so well. You really have to know jazz and hip-hop history to be able to appreciate it fully though. That's not as true with III so maybe you'd enjoy that one more.

really need someone to explain their work to me, specifically this; their most polarizing work imo
>>
>>61403914
It's a great album but there's a lot of extra hype that has to do with it's cultural impact. I can see how someone who's not interested in American class struggle and racial politics might have less of an interest of this album. A great thing about the album musically however, is the very successful fusion of many different styles. I know that fusing hip-hop and jazz is nothing new but it's done in a new way on here (not just dudes jamming over a new york boom bap beat) It has a sort of history of black music while remaining a cohesive album and never sounding dated.

The Geros were and edgy act, but they were comitted to it. Instead of satirezing someone or something political or religious (GG Allin, Marilyn Manson), they satirize themselves and the music they made. Pic related basicly defines this whole band's purpose. IMO
Also, I mostly find this band work as humorous. They are having fun with what they are making.
Also, if you are not into noise you will hardly get them. They've also made good stuff besides the joke stuff. They've made a nice dark ambient EP, Endless Humiliation, their first EP(which is basicly a rock realese), and other stuff

I didn't get this album for a while, but it's psychedelic elements grew on me and I find myself coming back to it every now and then. the first track, Jesus etc. and poor places are definitely the highlights. when the piano kicks in towards the middle of poor places I get shivers every time.
