While their creative influences aren't confined rigidly to one year, the artists are still creating music in a certain period, a certain social atmosphere. Years aren't a very good way to categorize things because of the fluidity in social and artistic settings, but it's the easiest, hence its popularity.

So you dislike genres too I take it? The concept of an "artist" is so last arbitrary time increment too. It just clouds the mind trying to put music into categories based on who it's made by, or who is the mascot for a particular collection of music.

Genres are mostly sales-pitches. It's more of a style of music that helps for some people to categorize what they're listening to, but there is a lot of music that doesn't really fit into that and is often put under many confused or inaccurate labels.
