I love the new versions of Tis a pity and Sue, Dollar Days is classic Bowie, my favourite along with the title track, sounds like it could've been on Toy.

I really like it

God Tier albums: Heathen, Low, The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, Station to Station and Scary Monsters.

10/10 albums: Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Heroes, Outside, The Next Day.

Not quite as awesome but still great: Space Oddity, Lodger, Reality.

Shit: Black Tie, Lets Dance, Tonight, Never let me down, S/T, Young Americans.

I thought it was very good, except for Tis A Pity, which doesn't even compare to his original version. That for me was a bummer.

Why can't we accept that Bowie hasn't made a "bad" album yet, and enjoy all of them for what they are? Obviously they are different in sound and quality, but why argue and shitpost about it? Nobody's taste is objective, it isn't real outside of your mind, so why force it upon other people? We just got one of Bowie's best albums yet, why not celebrate the album rather than talk shit?

So we're going to talk about it. Favorite tracks? Mine are Blackstar, Lazarus, Tis a Pity, and Dollar Days

Just finished the album.
I listened to the title track when it came out, and I was blown away. Hearing it again, I can say that my opinion is about the same.
Didn't hear the first recording of Tis A Pity, so I have nothing to compare it to. It was a solid song anyway. My only problem was Bowie trying to hit the high notes, he just can't do it anymore.
Lazarus was nice, I really liked the pseudo-ambience of it.
I didn't really like the new recording of Sue, but it was ok.
The rest of the tracks were pretty good too. Overall, 8.5/10. I still think "Heroes" is Bowie's best, but Blackstar is definitely in the top 10.

It was pretty good. Nothing amazing, but easily a 7.5/10, maybe 8 on a good day. It's definitely the most experimental thing Bowie has ever put out. I was hoping there would be more louder and aggressive moments that sound like his side project Swans, but for the most part, he's experimenting with electronic and jazz and whatnot. Which is cool, he does it well. The song Blackstar is one of my favorite songs released in 2015, and none of the other songs are quite as good as it, but they're still all pretty damn good

Apart from the obvious A New Career in a new town sample, I Can't Give Everything Away is so Black Tie White Noise, with a bit of Thursdays Child thrown in. Someone said on here that it sounds like a mix of his 90s albums, I'd say that's accurate, nothing wrong with that either.

>>
I felt the same way about The Next Day as I did for Young Americans. Not every track on it is great but there are a few really good songs that stand out on the album, most of them being deep cuts and not the singles. I would go back and listen to those albums but I would usually skip over certain tracks and basically make an EP of the ones I really liked. One of the reasons why The Next Day isn't a strong album is because it's too long, it could be condensed down and be stronger, and there isn't a clear unified sound. His vocal performance is not as strong as it used to be, of course that comes with age, but he was still trying to hit notes he could when he was a lot younger and it can comes off unpleasant.

The problems I had with The Next Day weren't really around on Blackstar. There isn't really a weak track on the album. There are songs that are clearly stronger than others but there isn't a weak song. I was kind of worried going into the album with the very Scott Walker vibe to it. David Bowie is really great at combining different elements of different music to make one big album (Ziggy Stardust, Low, Station to Station, etc.) However, Bowie does his own thing, he does combine different elements of people like Scott Walker, and I guess Kendrick Lamar now, but he does it in a very "Bowie" manner. My only complaint I have is some of his vocal performances on it, but that could just be with the quality of the file that was released. He's still trying to hit those high notes he could when he was younger, but he is embracing his voice when it comes to his current age. So if you listen to the topics and read the lyrics he's singing, his breaking vocals make sense.

It's definitely not my favorite Bowie album(Low) but I do think it's better than something like Let's Dance, Young Americans, and The Man Who Sold the World. There is still a lot of room for Bowie to grow, which is usually what he does. He usually builds up to a great album.
>>
>>61387879
Girl Loves Me is a GOAT track.
>>
>>61419836
Continued

It took him a few albums to build up to Ziggy and the same for Low. It's probably just as good as an album like Lodger. So not his best, definitely lower ten for bowie but nevertheless, still a top ten bowie album. Someone posted earlier giving it an 8.5/10 for it and that seems pretty accurate. The next album is going to be killer. Great way to start the year.

most of his 70s work is pure gold

I fucking love Diamond Dogs.
>>
>>61418910
Diamond Dogs has some of Bowie's most creative and interesting instrumentation out of all his albums. Nothing else comes close to the fantastic storytelling that the lyrics and mood of the album convey. Give it a few re-listens, it took time for it to grow on me, but it was so worth it.

yeah dude, experimentation in music sucks, doesn't it
>>
Is that how is eyes really are? Or is it some COOL PHOTOSHOP EYE LMAOO thing?
>>
>>61420967
It's his best
>>
>>61422605

Yes, he got punched in the eye when he was young and made it like that. The guy that punched him went on to design the Hunky Dory and Ziggy album covers.

They're really like that

Not that there's anything wrong with the album, but it's only too bad it'll never be truly appreciated like ZSD simply because he's old.
>>
>>61423819
What say...it's funny how a guy like Bowie can still produce engaging material at almost 70 while most of his peers have been a joke for decades.
>>
>>61423988
He's more of a pop artist. Rawk groups unfortunately end up playing greatest hits setlists at the county fair always since that kind of music doesn't lend itself to the same flexibility that a pop/country/jazz/whatever artist has. Rawk groups have a set list of canon hits and that's all the fans want to hear in perpetuity.
>>
>>61424092
>Implying pop artists don't just play the hits
>>
>>61424092
Pop artists usually don't have to do anything more than sing. Rock requires the demanding task of coming up with music to go along with the vocals. It's just harder and you only have a limited set of creative ideas before you burn out.

im just wondering where the fuck monday went

I agree with what you are saying as a criticism of shallow rock bands but Bowie's setlists almost always contained a large portion of his greatest hits
>>
>>61424211
Which particular pop artists were you referring to?
>>
>>61424247
I think it's more accurate to say that pop artists usually do have canon hits they perform, however rock is rather unique in that it limits you to about 10 years of creativity max.
>>
>>61424247

In the 80s, yeah. His later tours, from the Outside tour to Reality, he played quite a lot of lesser known songs mixed in with some hits.
>>
>>61424332

I read that in the 90s a lot of the crowd walked out because he wasn't playing the hits haha. But in the Heathen and Reality tours the crowd went crazy for the lesser known/90s stuff.
>>
>>61424332
>>61424247
Well, that's kind of like Metallica. During the 90s they didn't play much of their 80s stuff except MOP and One while nowadays their setlists are like 90% stuff from the 80s albums.
>>
>>61424389
It might have depended on the crowd; the 90s tours may have had a lot of first generation Bowie fans from the 70s and they obviously only cared about ZSD and other stuff from their "era". They'd stopped listening to music when Reagan became president so didn't know or care about anything Bowie had done recently.
>>
>>61424522

Yeah, it's just interesting that his 90s stuff wasn't really appreciated at the time. And It's funny because he did a greatest hits tour at the beginning of the 90s and said from then on, he'd only play new stuff. (which he did for the most part for a few years) Guess they didn't get the memo.
>>
>>61424760

Speaking of his 90s albums, that's what Blackstar reminds me of the most.
>>
>>61424793
"Girl Loves Me" and "I Can't Give Everything Away" are literally Black Tie White Noise MK2, "Tis A Pity" is literally Earthling MK2, "Dollar Days" is literally Toy MK2, "Lazarus" is literally Heathen MK 2, the only really original tracks for him on this record are the title track and Sue.
>>
>>61424981
But then again, how unusual is that? I mean how many RHCP albums had good material outside the singles?
>>
>>61424981

Agreed but I think Sue sounds like it could've been on Outside.
>>
>>61387879
does david bowie write the music at all or just sing? because if that's the case he really adds nothing to the music
>>
>>61425509
he writes practically everything on all his albums except Pinups which was a covers album
>>
Kind of surprised this isn't being discussed more, or are people waiting for a better quality rip?
>>
>>61426933
i'm waiting to buy it on once it's released.
>>
>>61425873
Bowie is a fucking Starman.
>>
>>61426933

Yep.
>>
It's great
>>
>>61425509
He writes all the lyrics, and either hands sheet music out to the band or brings in taped demos. He's a mad scientist.
