I'm beginning to think I'm completely incompetent with synthesizers.
I've been trying off and on for a few months to incorporate some free synths into my workflow instead of using exclusively samples, but everything I make sounds flat and lifeless as fuck. It's not even that it lacks automation, it's just super generic and shitty.
I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of what most of the knobs do but I'm always at a complete loss when it comes to which I should actually use other than basic shit like volume envelope controls.
It could be because I've been using some shitty freeware but I fucking doubt it as I've seen some cool shit made with them.

You can get these sounds either by fucking around with a synth and making your sounds and throwing effects on, or sampling things (perhaps unconventional sounds) and making them into drum one-shots

See if you can try to copy or replicate sounds in some of your favorite tracks. Knowing your basic controls (volume envelope, filter envelope, pitch envelope, LFO) you can do a lot. A lot of sounds you hear (depending on the genre of course) are probably a lot more simple than you realize, they just sound great when they sit in a mix and have reverb and things on them.

Oh and the other main kick that's in there sounds like it's probably a real kick or at least a close approximation. Not very subby at all, more meant for punch. Probably just sample to get this, sounds like a pretty standard kind of hip hop kick

What DAW are you using? I use Ableton's Operator to get a lot of basic drum sounds, an analog synth would probably work just as well though. Any synth that has pretty precise volume envelope controls will do. And again sampling is gonna be useful as well.

I don't really pay attention when I am making something pretty sure the synths are distorted and turned down/eq'd correctly (most likely originally rhodes type preset).
The drums are an amen break. One clean and the same one with distorted and bit crusher effects on it but with lower volume to give it more crunch.

I assuming you're using a DAW with a controller as opposed to a standalone sampler or something. Odds are you need to lower the latency between your computer and your controller by reducing the buffer size in the preferences or settings menu of your DAW, and make it lower until you don't notice a delay anymore

I've heard the M-audio 88 key controller is good for the money, but I have no experience with it. I would say the best place to look is craigslist. Digital pianos make great controllers and a lot come with usb these days. A lot of people buy them, never try to learn piano, and sell them on Craigslist. Probably more than any other instrument besides acoustic guitar.
Otoh, if you're looking to make mostly non-piano sounds, fully weighted might not be the way to go. Most keyboards like organ, clavs, and synths, don't have weighted keys, and their playing style doesn't suit weighted keys.

Are you rendering the audio after you add the effects?
You'll usually see the waveform display changing once you've rendered the effected audio, especially noticeable with processors that alter dynamics or overall level.
If your waveform doesn't change when you add the effect it's because you have another step to complete - by either applying or rendering the effect, depending on the terminology your audio editor uses.
