I'm the old fart who was complaining about not seeing his favorite 90's emo bands in any of the "/mu/ emo essentials" charts I found online. Someone recommended I make my own chart, so I made three broken down by genre. Not definitive by any stretch. I haven't heard close to anything, but I've heard alot. My bias is toward fancy drumming/polyrhythms and weird melodies that manage to maintain a groove.
Not much should be controversial here aside from some genre distinctions and I did include some records from 2000 because fuck it why not.

I won't do much editorializing because no one wants to hear my blog. On this chart, I will say that if you are a Spirit Assembly/400 years fan and you haven't heard it, you need to hear Fields Lay Fallow. Their songs build up tension, then explode into fantastic polyrhythms that almost sound like afrobeat at times. One of the best hc records that I own.

I rarely liked much pretty/twinkly emo, so I'm sure that will disappoint some people. I listened to Frame and Canvas and it was a little embarassing. Same with Antioch Arrow for different reasons.

I'll be here for a while so feel free to complain/ask questions. These were fun to do.
>>
haha don't you mean screamoe? :^)
>>
>>61360064
I remember looking up wrought: ironsmile and they didn't stick out to me then, but maybe I'll have to listen again.

I'm from DC and anasarca were a fun live band. But aside from the ragged energy and weird chords there really wasn't much going on there that was interesting to me musically.

They did a show celebrating their return from a big tour, but they were exhausted so they just set up and freaked out fucking around on their instruments for like 3 minutes before busting out laughing and just hung out. Good times.
>>
>>61360064
Same guy you replied to...
For a band in that anasarca style, I recommend The Day of Man as Man.
>>
>>61360225
sounds fun
i think you should try out wrought ironsmile again for sure
theyre one of my favorite bands with the whole start/stop, high/low thing going on
their split with warsaw union is their best stuff i think

Discovered this band today. They're p good imo desu

how's it going emofriends? how's winter break, or holidays in general, or whatever? i've just been reading books, hanging out with old friends, listening to emo, and playing certain games notorious for securing me a ban consistently upon mention. it's been a very emoe time

today i listened to tawny peaks' first album and it's just as good as it was the other times. everyone listen to this thing:
https://tawnypeaks.bandcamp.com/track/the-tree-song

also i gave sorority noise's new full length a full spin for the first time and it's not that exciting desu

Me again. Forgot to put this record on there. Absinthe 7" on King of the Monsters. Killer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbWYuzY3Zj0

Didn't include anything by Fugazi, Quicksand or DLJ. I think all are great, but I put them in different categories than emo, even though I can't always justify it.

Anyone have any recs to share for modern bands based on my taste? I've only enjoyed a handful of new hc/post-hc bands since 2000. Some "ex-members of" bands, but nothing new. I can only think of Ampere and Cinemechanica off the top of my head.

I think my first ban was because I was talking about persona 3 in these threads, lol.
Also that hoover 7' is in slsk, you should get it senpai.
>>61361211
I don't know if you already put them in a chart, even if it's not new stuff, but have you listened to hoover? I posted this on the other thread.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrkYGoktawQ
If you are checking newer stuff There's this band called "This time we will promise and not forgive" iirc, that had a pretty 90s sound, there's a mega link in the archive too.

Yeah, I got Lurid Traversal and even the early Crownhate Ruin 7"s in there. Hoover were the shit. I don't remember listening to these songs. Thanks. All those guys were in some really good bands after Hoover. The most on-thread-topic one is Radio Flyer. A band with Alex and some people from some great Chicago bands of that time that existed for one week recorded, played one show and broke up.
