Grunge was the nail in the coffin, it was dying before that though. Every fucking buttrock album had the same formula: power ballads, heavy track that became the first single, etc. More often than not it was the record companies who were demanding this formula. The image drastically changed as the music got stale: compare House of Pain Motley Crue to Dr Feelgood. Part of that was the rise of Gnr in the late 80s and the "bad boy" sleaze shit they brought without the spandex cheese.
