Rock is still around. It's a shadow of it's former self, no doubt. But it's still around.

This. No paying music listeners actually give a shit what critics think.
There are still a few critically acclaimed rock bands. Swans come to mind. But yeah the golden age of rock is gone.
It's not really fashionable anymore. Indie rock was fashionable until recently but now hip hop has taken that over. Critics pander to their audience so if their readers listen to mostly hip hop then that's what will be rated highly.
There is that wave of shitty college "alternative" rock that is for some reason quite popular like 21 pilots and mumford and sons. However, its garbage and it is hard to even categorize it as rock at this point.
