Something people forget is how important a good bassist is. They don't have to be flashy, but they have to be able to keep time with the drummer or else everything falls apart. If the guitarist sucks, which the overwhelming majority do, it doesn't really matter, and guitarists are easily replaceable anyways because everyone plays it. If the bassist can't keep it together, though, you're screwed.
