This 2bh. He may as well have been the only member of the Pumpkins who are one of the most acclaimed bands in recent times, he's literally the 90's best superstar and while Nirvana and Pavement are really good they just don't have the same prowess and variety. Too bad he went crazy and decided to drive his band into the ground.

Billy Corgan just has grumpy old man syndrome.

At least he's still out there getting it done.

A lot of bands from the 90s do nothing but play their greatest hits.

They don't even bother writing new songs.

Corgan is a very underrated guitar player and song writer.

I mean, Nirvana are great and everything, but why did they have such an impact on the culture, when Corgan was writing better hits?
>>
pavement has 3 good albums and they sound the same. pumpkins have 4 great albums and they actually go somewhere different with each one. hell pisces iscariot is a b-side album and it's as good as anything pavement's ever done.

Siamese Dream

Adore

Yeah, I'm seeing like 2 and a half for the Pumpkins here
>>
>>61333699
that's because it sounds like generic indie rock.
>>
>>61333733
Heck I wouldn't even count Adore as great. Good at best.
So we're down to 1 and a half great albums.
>>
>>61333686
Corgan had more of an impact, but nobody acknowledges it because Kurt killed himself, making it cooler and easier to be all in his shit.
>>
>>61333699
I just meant in general. When I worked at a radio station, every single person there liked Pavement. (And obvs I don't mean popular in the mainstream sense 'cause Pavement didn't have much mainstream success.)

>>61333720
nah see my above comment. I mean popular as in people who are into music tend to like Pavement.

Look I know it's all subjective, but your opinion doesn't automatically change their amazing 90's output. You can't just say "I don't like that so now WE are down to this" there is no we, their first 4 albums are universally acclaimed, minus Adore sort of. Also

Nice trips, but do you know what popular means? Just because 4 people you worked with liked Pavement doesn't mean they're anywhere near popular. Look I really like Pavement, but there is no case to be made for them being better or more popular than Pavement. Maybe you like them more, but that doesn't change the truth.
>>

guessing you meant smashing pumpkins?
I wasn't saying Pavement was more popular than them. I was saying that, in general, Pavement is a popular band. They're hardly underground. Their music is critically acclaimed. They're one of the more well known indie rock bands of the '90s, for sure. Not sure how you could argue otherwise.

Well, as you said Adore probably doesn't really count in the same way Brighten the Corners might not count for Pavement. I'd personally hesitate to include Gish in the "great" list as well, as nostalgic as it is for me.
>>
What's your favorite SP song?

I love Silverfuck.
>>
>>61333998
Ok I misunderstood, now we're on the same level and yes Pavement is really good. Although I disagree that they aren't underground, what proof do you have otherwise?
>>
>>61334100
Blue or maybe Drown, probably Drown
>>
>>61334100
Rhinoceros, Cherub Rock, and Drown are my top 3 in no particular order.
>>
>>61334100
>>61334166
No wait! It's Hummer!

>>61334030
Yes I see, but this "personal hesitation" doesn't really mean much in the way of what we're discussing. Gish is what put them on the map in the first place and it had its share of hit songs. Also it's a wonderful transition album as far as the classic hard rock to alternative rock movement is concerned.
>>
>>61334138
Well, for one, Cut Your Hair was a top 10 Billboard song after its release. Pavement also sold out just about most of their shows when they reunited (Hell, I saw the Jicks in early 2014, and that show sold out well in advance). The sheer volume of their critical claim kinda points against them being underground. I'm not saying they're a mainstream band or anything, but you don't have to dig very long before you come across Pavement.
>>
>>61334138
Not him, but they've always been a favorite of mainstream critics, hell, I'd heard their music at a fairly young age and I wasn't a particularly adventurous or "underground" listener when I was a kid.
>>
>>61334193
Good fucking taste anon if I was a girl I would lick that fat cock
>>
>>61334100
They have too many great songs, it's impossible for me to choose.
>>
>>61334263
>>61334275
Ok I guess I was just obliviously unaware of them before coming to /mu/ as much as I hate to admit it. When it comes to the 90s I usually focus more on post-hardcore and that sort of rough aspect of Pavements music compared to the somewhat cleaner sound of the Pumpkins is what really struck me about their music and sets them apart for me. Both are great bands, but honestly I feel like Billy gets less love around here solely cuz they were played on the radio and /mu/ is being overrun by friendless losers that only care about being "superior" on the Internet to vent their frustration with being losers. Also I'm drinking.

I actually really like the vocals on Mellon Collie. It fits the music. It's what attracted me to them in the first place. I can understand why someone might be put off by them though, especially in the bland American Idol/X Factor times we live in. His vocals aren't that great now though.

>>61334798

Billy had hair worse than Michael Stipe.
He is better off bald.
They became GothGlam and influenced Metallica.

Smashing Pumpkins were more 80s than most credit them. That is why they went the same 80s Neo-Emo-Glam-Goth like Robert Smith mixed with Eddie Van Halen.

You hate it because I'm right.

Also, in retrospect people don't account for how whiny and pretentious Corgan was for years.

Also, wasn't into pro wrestling for a while?
>>
>>61333044
This. Pavement ate shit and Nirvana was just the flagship band for 'grunge'. Nothing special about either, musically.

If it wasn't for Nevermind, Gish would have set the pumpkins up for Nirvana-tier stardom. Siamese Dream was what killed Nirvana though. Nothing Kurt could do would top that, so he offed himself.

Or rather, Courtney realized she placed her bet on the losing horse so she offed him and took the insurance money - not knowing that killing him would make him a grunge martyr and a billion dollar fortune.
