Also, a lot of "R&B pop" groups from the 80's actually started out as soul acts before their labels pushed them to "modernize" their sound. Eg, The Dazz Band:

Anyone think the new Parliament album will be good? was pretty let down by Gotta Shake the Gate... 33 songs of nothing.

Been listening to soul all day, got out a bunch of my old vinyl and been digging some stuff, JB, Gaye, Stevie, ect. The Atlantic Rhythm & Blues compilations has some good stuff.

Soul, Funk, R&B is not meant for people who are sad on purpose or meaninglessly down, it's for those who deal with real circumstances mates
>>
>>61332644
>Thinking a genre is meant for a certain type of person

Just like any other genre Soul has all of it, it is mostly romantic but it's also sad, happy anything the artist you want.
Don't pretend you have knowledge next time
>>
>>61332644
Why do people act like Funk, Soul and R&B are the same thing? Funk isn't sad or down, it's upbeat and energetic.
>>
>>61332928

I mean P Funk blurs the lines of all 3 and throws Rock & Electronic music into the mix...
>>
>>61332737
>>61332928
>it's for those who deal with real circumstances mates
I only stated for who it is not, and more or less said it's for real people who deal with real struggle in general, explain how this is erroneous you autists
>>
>>61333179

Because after Sly came along, funk was by and large billed as an "inclusive" trend that was for everyone, even if a lot of white people thought it "wasn't for them"
>>
What's some good Psychedelic funk/soul? Already know Funkedelic and everything related.
>>
>>61332488
Good taste alert.

OP If you like Otis Redding, I can't recommend James Carr and Lee Moses enough. They were both similar in style, and I actually prefer their (much smaller) output overall.

James Carr
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNwP8gDvz-M

Lee Moses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lxp7WVXiXU

Other artists I enjoy (which might have been mentioned already) are:

Al Green
Aaron Neville
Billy Paul
The Four Tops
The Impressions
Isaac Hayes
Labi Siffre
Lee McDonald
Nina Simone
The O'Jays
The Shirelles
Skull Snaps
The Supremes
Wilson Pickett

Other artists that I don't really enjoy personally, but bear mentioning because others enjoy them and are related to the discussion are:

Baby Huey and the Babysitters
Bar-Kays
Shuggie Otis
>>
>>61330663

>Who else would I like?

Listen to this goatness:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sv9u92YQupI
>>
>>61333261
why are you bringing up white people lmao
>projection
what i said can more or less be true of any music, what it really means that even if you are more familiar with a completely different genre and this seems difficult to get into, open up emotionally first when you make the switch, that whats people forget to do then they call something shit
>>
Theres a lot of goat funk bands.
>>
>>61333300

Isn't a band on here that is "bad" in space

>>61330942

But I'd lean towards Oneness of Juju, Jack Dejohnette, Blood Ulmer, Isaac Hayes Gap Band & Undisputed Truth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edBs269nHlc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCBKVix2jPM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpAiCigSyBM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_LBR8aK-mY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EySe-GqbaWA

The Tubes are pretty damn funky too but it's hard to pull them on youtube. Their S/T album is a solid 9/10
>>
>>61333300
Hopefully "everything related" includes the various side projects and solo efforts of the members, like Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy Collins, Clinton, etc.

Besides that, Sly is similar, and what.cd also lists Curtis Mayfield (who I like but don't find super similar), Graham Central, Betty Davis, Mandre, and Gotcha!. Can't vouch for any of them though, sorry.
>>
>>61330663
Probably brought up already, but Sly and the Family Stone.
>>
>>61333401

Nah see, you can't really paint someone into a corner when you've already done a fantastic job of doing it to yourself. Just saying, you're wrong because of how Funk was presented, billed and marketed. Escapism for everyone. The racial divide is still worth mentioning, it's a little weird you're pretending like that's some useless conjecture in a discussion about Soul/Funk in the 70s/80s, but I guess I'm not you.
>>
>>61333179
> "you're not on my side you autist"

You do realize if you state for who it is not, you also state for who it is ?
Nice try thought, that save was almost as clever an autist

>>61333300
The Yellow Moon - The Neville Brothers
Menagerie - Bill Withers
Shuggie Otis

I don't think they is many of that in the 70-80's so I'll give you from others eras

Spirit of the Boogie - Kool and the gang
Last Day of Time - Earth wind and fire
>>
>>61333512
literally what is your point, what exactly did i say that is wrong
>>
>>61333601
first you didn't even quote me properly, and little man, please explain what i said that is wrong
>>
>>61333607

Several people have already pointed it out, but I might as well say it again.

Funk is for everyone.

You say funk isn't for <demographic>

Therefore you're wrong because:

Funk is for everyone.
>>
>>61333653
what "demographic" did i say it's not for lawl?
>>
Surprised no one's said Rose Royce or Heatwave yet, come to think of it.

and spelling isn't your strong suit, they are all closely knit derivatives, you literally have no idea what you are talking about or what you are fighting, there are no points to counter in what you said, i'm assuming your 16 years old? if so get some air, all those games can drive ya bonkers
>>
>>61333921

and semi related: Genesis' Dancing with the Moonlit Knight has the same chord progression and feel as Outkast's Spottieottiedopalicious

Yeah I'm kinda messed up( >>61333741,>>61333601)
, I don't correct myself and I see mistakes after posting it. I expected you were going to attack me on that rather than the actual point.
But don't talk about age, you are the only one swearing instead of arguing reasonably here.

Maybe because you're immature, or because you are wrong.
>>
>>61334096

He's not worth the glucose you used to type that shit out. lmao just ignore him and he'll go away and shitpost somewhere else.
>>
>>61334096
I never swore at you once lol..and i said they're all closely related. (this is now extra) - more or less bare musicianship, barely any modification, no cheap thrills or extravagant effects for pleasure junkies like today, its based off raw emotion which is critical in the culture behind those genres (not saying other genres don't do that) just smile dude
>>
>>61334128
>glucose
you're not a doctor, you're not fooling anyone lol
>>
>>61334128

It's okay, while he's doing his best to prove himself right in some fact he stated wrong, I enjoy trying to reason him. No matter how futile it is.

i already did, im utterly confused by your stance

I've loved Marvin Gaye, D'angelo, and Isaac Hayes, and have just recently gotten into James Brown. I can see why people consider him a legend, there's no one else like him, he can really capture anger, joy, and sorrow all on a single song. i definitely recommend getting around to him eventually OP. I'm liking his longer songs that sound like him just improvising and telling his problems in a straight forward but soulful way.

Look up Groove Machine - JB's

It's not the original JB's, but it's a damn good Funk/Disco album.
>>
>>61335033

I'll rec you Sly and the family stone which a must, maybe Jackie Wilson (crossover between JB and Elvis Presley, weird but amazing)

and if you liked both marvin gaye and d'angelo, you might like Maxwell (His debut is good, name the marvin gaye of the 90's, the two next are rather experimental, and the last one is god-tier to me)
>>
>>61335132
thanks mate, it looks pretty interesting. i'll give it a listen
