I'm making a chart for the best albums to test some good quality headphones on. So far I've got these standard ones. What are some other albums that sound amazing on quality cans /mu/?

dude what?
I guess the mono version has loads going on, but I hope you don't mean the Stereo version, that has instrumental tracks missing, and shitty panning.
This gets my vote
>>
Remain in Light, picking out all the different elements and polyrhythms is pretty fun

Chamber music is the best way to test headphones.
>>
>>61317747
been meaning to hear that. heard it has very good production.
>>61317750
wait what instrumental tracks missing?? which ones? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Piper_at_the_Gates_of_Dawn#Track_listing
i do listen to the stereo version but i've heard not to. why is this? apart from that crazy pan in interstellar overdrive, the rest of the album sounds great.
but i guess it was late 60s when everyone was experimenting with stereo, so i see your point.
>>61317754
for sure. i love hearing the drums move around in the great curve.
>>61317756
meme??????

Literally any music should be headphone music. That said, I think the kind of music that should definitely be headphones only should really focus on the minute details, changes, textures. To get on this chart of only 25 albums they would all have to be fantastic.
First up is Michael Jacksons Thriller, I'm not a huge MJ fan, but you cannot deny that this album is intricate as fuck and produced perfectly. Every last sound is dialed perfectly, every chord has great voicings, there are loads of parts and instruments and lots to hear. Add it.
After that, I would go with a good number of ambient/drone/drone metal albums. Only pick the cream of the crop though, it will be all about really listening to those sounds change and develop.
Next up, you need a lowercase work/album. It's a genre created from the idea of making music from quiet sounds. It really needs to be digested through headphones in a quiet setting.
Last, add Giles Corey - Giles Corey. Sit with good headphones, grab a copy of the accompanying book (or PDF) and let this album change you.
>>
>>61317794
oh nice. could you give any examples? not really familiar with the genre. if you mean classical/minimalism, i have glassworks and steve reich downloaded which i need to get around to listening to. or do you mean something else?
>>
>>61317805
If you add Good morning Goodnight as 'lowercase' Ill kill you.

>>61317756
>>61317796
Definitely meme

This chart is looking pretty shit so far t b h.

Idealy with headphones you want neutrality.
Chamber music shows imbalances in neutrality in the headphones and you can pretty easily notice them if it's recorded well.
Acoustic music is also pretty good at this.

https://rateyourmusic.com/customchart?page=1&chart_type=top&type=album&year=alltime&genre_include=1&include_child_genres=1&genres=chamber+music&include_child_genres_chk=1&include=both&origin_countries=&limit=none&countries=
The RYM chamber music has good examples of this.

alright thanks. you'd think every album should be, but some just don't have the same intricate attention dedicated to production. i'll add your recs. what would you rec for drone and lowercase? not as familiar with them.

CASIOPEA - FRESHNESS
Daft Punk - Homework
DEAFCULT - DEAFCULT
Fugazi - Seven songs
>>
>>61317937
alright mate got it up. haven't heard that daft punk but discovery is great. was debating whether to put up justice's cross actually, but wasn't completely sure. i put fugazi's 13 songs instead as it includes the other ep too, which i think is just as good
>>
>>61317981
Substrata - Biosphere is quite interesting to listen to with headphones instead of speakers.
>>
>>61317796
By instrumental tracks I mean parts of the song.
compare
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o2sA0vpA-4
and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPoZoEV9AsU

and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpVeysdJA30
with
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGU9fAkrc98

In Interstellar Overdrive, an entire organ line is missing from the stereo intro, in addition to various parts within the song.
In Flaming, the vocals are heavily processed in the mono, which greatly adds to the psychedelic feel imo.
"Take up thy stethescope and walk" is much better in mono too, it feels more like a band jamming, than the sterile feel that primitive stereo technology gave it.

Also, the problem with the panning can be heard with Lucifer Sam, where nothing happens in the left channel for quite a while, it's not nice.

>>
>>61318026
huh. do you mean this version of overdrive? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcoFiGEaiwQ because if so then yeah, i can hear that organ. the vocals are different on flaming too. and i know what you mean about lucifer sam it is a bit uncomfortable. i'll download the mono version then and compare. i still really like how the stereo sounds though production wise. although i like the raw jam aspects of mono, i think stereo does suit psychedelic better.

I want wind to blow, The moon, Headless Horseman and My Roots Are Strong and Deep, are exceptionally great, when it comes down to stereo production, you can serously listen to the songs tens of times, and still be able to discover something new with each listen if you focus. It's somewhat the same with helplessness blues as i said, try them both.
>>
>>61318199
yeah i love hearing all the little details on some good headphones. it's been a long time since i've heard both, and i don't think i've heard them on anything other than earphones, so i'll give them a relisten again soon. great albums indeed.
>>
It should be OK computer instead of Kid A

Also, Lateralus and Lonerism
>>
>>61318199
the instrumental tracks too, the way the four different guitar lines ping across the stereo field is mesmerising
>>
>>61318451
hmm not too sure. i think kid a definitely benefits from the immersiveness thy headphones provide for sure. although pretty much every radiohead album could be on here. tempted to put in rainbows on there too.
added a couple more and switched out maggot brain to the doors. love some big beat.
>>
change baro for Madvillainy, add play by moby, Get Rekt by Seth Boyer and Synkronized by Jamiroquai
>>
>>61318556

I totally understand Kid A being on this list, but I still feel like OKC has more texture from the piano, acoustic guitar, bass, etc.

Might wanna put Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Hallelujah! Don't Bend, Ascend! On there.

what i wanted to do was have a chart with albums that really show off quality headphones. kind of blue or cosmogramma for instance really pop out and use the soundstage of open headphones so well, and i wanted a chart with albums that do that as well.
but yes, unfortunately i haven't heard a bunch of these so i'm taking people's words for it. what i've added is a bunch of obscure stuff which i don't know about at all, but i can't exactly 'research' or 'listen' to them that quickly either.
so what would you guys add, change, or remove from the chart?

Why do you insist on breaking the rules so much?

The filters were implemented on the board for a reason. People spammed these particular words until they made any possible discussion impossible. And when you use these words again, you're lowering down the level of discussion. There's no reason for you to bypass the filters either; there are plenty of other terms you could use.

But no. You chose this particular route, even when it's directly against the law, just because your ego makes you.

I hope you're ashamed of yourself.
