What is Nu-Metal?

I've heard it simply described as buttrock from the late 90s to the mid 2000s, but it doesn't seem to have any concrete traits that I can pin down.
>>
>>61303110
rap-like vocals, metalcore-like punk instrumentation
>>

So, Rage is nu-metal?
>>
funky metal played in drop-d tuning with edgy lyrics
>>
>>61303141
They predate nu-metal. I guess you could call them proto-nu-metal.
>>
>>61303147

that's dope ass avant garde new metal, not nu-metal

they were called crossover. crossover made brutal became numetal. numetal was the brostep of the 90s.
>>
also, buttrock is more of a term for post-grunge and generic hard rock, nu-metal is too varied

The way most people use the term it encompasses Tool, Korn, Limp Bizkit, and basically ended around Deftones, SOAD, and Slipknot. Everything after that (on the pop level) was more like "metalcore" or "Djent" or whatever.

Characteristically it's metal that's overtly emotional, pop savvy, and dynamic (Nirvana-much?) with pretensions of "artistry" (example Disturbed - Stupify whose bridge is inexplicably a fucking Muezzin call with appropriate middle eastern instrumentation).
What not enough people talk about is that it applies metal chops to tight popwise song structures, which is a theoretically good idea.

Deftones are the one nu-metal band it's acceptable to like. It helps that they've put out some great albums (White Pony, Saturday Night Wrist, Diamond Eyes)

Millennials grew up inundated in it, it took all of the worst musical influences of the time and threw them together.

I remember just how bad it was in middle school and high school having to listen to this dreck, and it wasn't till my mid-teens that I somehow discovered actual decent music.
>>
>>61303669
desu I thought nu-metal was the coolest shit in middle school
>>
>>61303669

everyone knows it isn't that good, it's just fun music
>>
>>61303705
this is something only plebs say
>>
>>61303726

plebs also think the term "millennial" doesn't go back to people born in 1980
>>
>>61303632
I'll do it. Thank you based Wayne for helping my teenage angst.
>>
Nu-metal was basically made for two demographics:

>White trash kids
>White middle-class kids who wished they were
>>
i still really enjoy gently and scissors by slipknot

Was this nu-metal?
>>
>>61303110
>buttrock from the late 90s to the mid 2000s
That's Foo Fighters, STP and Nickelback.

Nu-metal is Korn, Linkin Park, and Limp Bizkit.
>>
>>61303159
Okay what about RHCP?
>>
>>61304902
i like SOAD somewhat, although i only occasionally listen to them

and some older linkin park stuff... mostly for nostalgic reasons i suppose... although i don't really listen to any of it anymore
>>
>>61303308

I feel pretty bad for the Deftones, they'll always be group in with Nu-Metal despite having only 2 or 3 tracks with "rapping."
>>
>>61303636
>>61303110
>>61303126

i once heard nu-metal described as a loose set of attributes to which no nu-metal band actually conforms to all said attributes, except sometimes in parody

for instance... SOAD conforms to the use of heavy-metal-ish guitars and (especially earlier on) a macabre stage presence and aesthetic... although they don't use any of the "rap-like" aesthetics... IE turntables and use only occasional rap-like vocals
>>
>>61305168
they weren't really "metal" enough to be nu-metal.
>>
>>61304791

>gently

better be the mfkr version because the one on iowa is trash
>>
Such an embarrassing time. I was really into all of it in high school, wore shitty edgy band shirts and hoodies everyday and all that. I'm so embarrassed when I look back at how retarded I must have looked like to adults.

>>
>>61305199

nu-metal isn't just rapping though, it's the style of the music too
>>
>>61305479
I thought JNCO's were more associated with ravers than nu-metal
>>
>>61305403
i like both
>>
>>61305639

at least you acknowledge the original
>>
>>61305664
Ill agree with you, original was better. What genre are Slipknot now?
>>
>>61305534
I remember a lot of metalheads wearing them. Juggalos also wore them.

you mean like currently? i couldn't give a shit

heres some "nu" nu-metal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8J_0wkmqq8o
>>
>>61304742
This was why I was never really into nu-metal, I did grow up white trash since I was poor, but I thought it was really juvenile music even while I was a juvenile.

It's whole image looked like straight up pandering to me, the faux-machismo didn't help either.

what does that mean? i'm not down with the kids

Michigan here. JNCO was almost exclusively worn by juggalos here.
