What I understand by looking at most of these threads is that all the cool kids on /mu/ have to listen to a band that nobody has heard of or has punk influence. I mean, I'm all about finding some new artists, but I have such a hard time finding small names that I love to death.

You're approaching it with the wrong mindset. I listen to what I listen to because I like it and draw influence from it because it inspires me. The artists I listed aren't even terribly obscure. Listen to more music, man.

What is wrong with Skrillex?

Besides, I was mostly just talking about implementing that style of production and sound design and sometimes using similar sounding wonky mid-range bass. It's not about doing exactly what Skrillex does, it's just an influence.

My music would be kinda neo-classical + gothic rock and the lyrics would be like a romantic era poem, something like Nico and Flowers of Romance era PiL, with alot of harmonium and church organ. Burzum - Daudi Baldrs would be a huge influence too. But this is all hypothetical btw I cant even play the guitar (pic related is baroque not romantic, I know).

Oh yeah, and Fela Kuti. Tony Allen and Jaki Liebezeit's drumming are most influential to me, followed by Bruford and Mitch Mitchell

Djam Karet, Focus, Pekka Pohjola, Heldon, Herbie Hancock, Volker Meitz (chiptunes).

As I currently know music, I think I'd make music that fuses several genres together. A mix of long, semi-improv prog rock jams and shorter, two or three minute tunes. Lead guitar would ideally have a HUGE range of textures, plucking, slapping, strumming, echoing, fuzzy, clean, imitating DJs scratching records or the arpeggios commonly found in chiptunes. anything to change it up. Bass guitar would be very busy, bouncing and hanging around the lower range. Drumming style would be a mix of jazz, new wave, and metal. All sections given a chance to shine.

Instrumental stuff that would put a tight, focused, hard prog rock tilt to approaching genres like country, jazz, electronic/chiptune, new wave, shoegaze, etc.

Writing:
Ornette Coleman
Thelonious Monk
Duke Ellington
Charles Ives
Aaron Copland

Playing:
Ornette Coleman
Clifford Brown
Miles Davis
Warne Marsh
>>
Justin Hayward (Moody Blues): vocals
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd): guitar
Roger Waters (Pink Floyd): songwriting, lyrics and album concepts
Daft Punk, Justice, deadmeme: electronic sound, synths

Genre influences:
Art music
Prog Rock
Prog house
French house
Downtempo

I would probably try to do a mix of prog house and prog rock, since those are two of my favorite genres. Probably would sound like shit due to how different they really are, but I'd try. I'd make as many concept albums as possible, cause I love listening to concept records.

Kind of similar to Rick Wright's Broken China. It's a melancholic blend of being-psychedelia, prog Rock, with heavy use of electronic equipment

this is literally that one /mu/mor comic thing in which /b/ poster arrives and is shat on and goes on back to /b/ to cry about how pretentious we are.

i agree we come across as asses, but you just came across as pretty ignorant, to be fair, not knowing any of those three very influential and talked-about bands. i mean i myself have yet to listen to tortoise, and find that the microphones aren't quite to my taste, but nonetheless i know about them and their influence at the very least.
