>Tell us how your month of noise is going
Well pic related is my week. I'm having a hell of a lot of fun with this. Moreso than NBBMN last month. I'm kinda loose with my functional definition of noise, so I'm including some old school industrial, EAI, and field recordings.
>>
Did you guys find out more about I am a Lake of Burning Orchids and his/her other projects and Whitemorgue?
>>
>>61266357
his Laurel Noose project is probably my fav noise thing ever
>>
mi mes de noise is going pretty good. I've been working on a bunch of tracks that use the soundtrack to Metropolis as the basis for the samples, and I'm gonna be releasing an album on new years day.

i've been checking out a bunch of noise essentials and getting into the Rita, Merz (besides Pulse Demon), etc. haven't been checking out that much stuff in the last few days because of the holiday season/working on tracks, but I copped the bootleg of 77 Live by LRD that came out last month, so that's cool.
>>
>>61266331
I'd participate but I hate bandcamp

lol why
>>

Also, how tf do you make a noise track ABOUT anything?
>>
>>61266687
I just really dislike the feel of it. Feels like MySpace or RealMediaPlayer.
>>
>>61266717
as compared to the mess that is soundcloud?
>>
>>61266691
you choose what you wanna say about your town and then you make a track based around your feelings :-)
>>
>>61266691
Use field recordings of your subject, make the music with the subject in mind so that it emotes, to you, the feeling you get from your subject, contextualize the track with the title, artwork, packaging, and project name. In many cases noise is closer to a multimedia artform than one of just sound
>>

I know it's not really noise, but would anyone be up for talking about Vatican Shadow? What's your favorite release/era? What did you think of Death is Unity with God? I've always preferred the Washington Buries Al-Qaeda Leader at Sea series the most. I think they demonstrate the highest points of all the best elements of the project, and the longer more reverby tracks he did early on were always my favorites. I think Death is Unity with God is a nice change from what I thought we were going to be getting from now on after Remember Your Black Day - more accessible dancy stuff. Death in contrast brought back that dark, tense, and industrial atmosphere that I think really characterizes the project, even if he's not necessarily going to go back to the simple percussive loops and long drony synths of the early days. I have to commend Dom's talent in creating the atmosphere of what he called the "spy game where you don't know whose side your own or who is winning".

Also interested in what people think of Byzantine Private CIA since it's so different from the others.

>>
>>61268490
I agree with enjoying the Washington Buries... series the most of out all VS. I'm glas I own the second one on cassette because Bin Laden's Corpse is so good. I don't have a favorite era although I really enjoyed When You Are Crawling.

Death Is Unity With God was a cool release even though I haven't absorbed it all just yet, especially Fireball. I would rather much own that box set rather than the Vampyric Screams thing but too bad I live on the other side of the planet from where Death was sold at that show ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wanna see more of Vatican Shadow and Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement in general, since he's put his recent effort into touring and FNF of course.
>>
>>61268701
I really want to see more Christian Cosmos more than the other two. Something really special about that project's sound.

Eric Holm probably although there's a lot of stuff I really enjoy up there. I've been on mobile a lot recently so I only have acess to the more heavily curated section of my library.

does it produce tone or is it like, hooked up to a contact mic and amplifier?
>>
>>61269801
Well, the string vibrating on the metal (soundboard, natch) should make *a note*, just not necessarily a very good one, y'know. Then it certainly goes into a contact mic, into effects, and into an amp.
Electro-Faustus makes a similar kind of thing, but I don't have any experience with it.
>>
>>61269837
thats neat
>>
>>61269837
I guess more appropriately I should say that the soundboard would amplify the sound of the stretched spring (which I misspelled!), but anyway it's a contact mic kind of thing
>>
>>61269837
I actually just got that Electro faustus pedal today as a christmas gift, I don't really have much of my other setup with me so I can't really see its full potential but so far it seems pretty sweet!
>>
>>61270247
I imagine it's pretty cool, and I've thought of buying it a few times, but it always seemed a touch expensive for something I could probably just masami-rig myself.
In any case, be sure to let us know how it all meshes when you get it with the rest of your stuff!
>>
>>61269775
I'm getting really interested in FAG TAPES. I have a couple of things DL'd per your shares. I plan on getting the Digital Discography.

What are some of your favorites and do you have any further recommended reading?

I'm not asking for DL links just recs. As always thank you so much.
>>
>>61270307
I agree, its pretty easy to make one yourself with a wooden board some nuts, bolts, piezo mic, and some coils for really cheap, but it has a nice bandpass-like (not sure exactly what to explain the effect as, just going off the website's explanation) knob on it, a momentary killswitch, and the construction allows the coils to actually be tuned how you like so if you're looking for a more controlled texture or like a specific drone frequency like I am its a good pedal. I'll post more as I experiment more for sure!
>>
New to noise rock

Listened to a couple albums. I really like Big Black's stuff. Any more "noise punk" kinda stuff? I also listened to melt-banana's stuff and I really enjoy it. More like that? I'm also a fan of Merzbow's Merzbeat if there's any more like that too.

Not sure if it's related, but is lo-fi similar to noise? If so, anything like ITAOTS in the sense where everything is a bit distorted and fuzzy?

oh, I listened to Daydream Nation, but it wasn't really my thing.
>>
>>61271019
Not the thread for that kind of thing mate
>>
>>61271019
I don't really know many noise rock bands, but if you want something really heavy and really noise oriented, check out Vegas Martyrs, though you might want to check out a different thread, as I think you're more interested in "noisy" than "noise".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Oi3_pW4pg4

>but is lo-fi similar to noise?

Not really. Noise is a lot about the concept, a lot about the astructure, and a lot about the literal physical definition of noise, a bunch of different frequencies. Regardless, some, like me, consider industrial, dark ambient, etc. as "honorary" noise in their similarity in structure, history, and concept.
>>
>>61271019
is this thread just straight up noise like pulsedemon?
>>61271145

ah, my mistake. I thought noise was like an umbrella term where you could rec noise rock/pop etc.

Thanks for the rec tho
>>

Hi, I have put my submission for the upcoming compilation. I also emailed the organizer the link so this post is partially to verify that it was received.

Because not every bandcamp project is going to be shit, some people legitimately care about their art and want to get exposure, and it's shitty, damaging, and nonproductive to assume that every project associated with a certain medium of consumption/exposure indicates shitty art.
>>
>>61283327
I'm more annoyed that a couple people have posted bandcamps in this thread, and previous ones, and gotten no attention. But you all felt that the bandcamp that "is supoeted to be both angry at teh government and
A E S T H E T I C af (notice the naked anime girls as the album cover)". Like how does that make sense? Why prioritize something obviously intended as a joke? Is it just more interesting for you to do that?

>>61283457
That description wasn't in the post itself, so my individual attention to the project was caught prior to discovering the contents. I get what you mean when it comes to replying, but I feel an irrational human need to tell somebody about something flawed that I find in their work. As for why I clicked this one and not another? Just circumstance. I might not have seen others, or I may have come online to see that post and it immediately came to attention. Regardless of intending to be a joke, is it not at least a tiny bit justified to let the person know that this thread isn't about posting "joke" projects about a style/genre we're interested in?
>>
>>61283568
I did say it was shitty, and just to be clear, I do genuinely enjoy noise.

One would think he wouldn't need three people to say that. It seems like people are more eager to deliver negative feedback than positive feedback so they gravitate to the trolls. But it is 4chan, so of course an abundance of negativity is to be expected. Who would have any interest in offering helpful feedback to people who actually try and care, right?
>>
>>61283634
EXACTLY, you even prefaced it as such and doing so got you more attention. It takes less effort to shit on something than to think critically and offer legitimate feedback, after all
>>
>>61283706
that's the world we live in though, a lot of people get famous because of jokes instead of their content
and 4chan is the place where it all starts
>>
>>61280188
Hey dude, this is not bad at all. I really like how in some spots you can hear some vague semblance of recognizable sounds you might find in a town. Your title does a nice job of grounding the listener in a certain experience as we hear your sounds. Looking forward to hearing it in the comp.

In fact I'm really looking forward to everyone's, and how we'll all interpret the theme. Let's hear that hometown angst I know we've all got, folks.
>>
>>61283952
Is there somewhere less shitty to discuss and disseminate music? Like somewhere where people actually care?
>>
>>61283990
Thank you. I appreciate your feedback! It's hard to get feedback in this genre in this format so we have to help each other out and whatnot, right? I'd love to see even more people post their stuff and get more discourse going on! I like the feeling of having a peer group with whom to share and hone my noise with. I feel like we all have something to say, and noise seems like a pretty effective way to say it for many people. I just think that's really cool is all
>>
>>61283706
I think you're overexaggerating the contrast between positive and negative feedback in these threads. If you see someone with no attention, go at it yourself and give feedback and much of the time, others will pay attention to it as well. The harsh reality of humans in general is that we will more readily provide negative feedback, and the harsh reality of these threads is that a lot of people are sick of seeing bandcamps in general because of shitty effortless art, which again, influences the negative attention toward the shitty art. Try and shape the way you want the attitude to be by giving feedback yourself if you think it's lacking deserved attention.

Yeah I've only lived in Plainfield a couple years so it's not really my "home town" so I sort of approached it as like a "I wish we could afford to live somewhere else because this is an impoverished shithole" type deal. I feel like "hometown angst" wouldn't be the most accurate description in that respect, but that's just me
>>
>>61286541
Hey man did you make a track for the compilation?
>>
>>61287044
yes, submitted today.
>>
>>61274524
NBND comp guy here. Been away for the last few days because of the season, apparently people have had a problem with me making money out of the comp?
I honestly wasn't expecting to make anything out of it (cause who the fuck pays for digital downloads), though I justify it given the amount of time I put into doing the run around with artists that didn't give me all their details, and listening to all your tracks, writing descriptions/reviews for each one and the cover art. I spent that money on supplies to fund a netlabel and tape distribution project I plan to start next year, so far with two regular /noise/ posters, apart from myself.
IIRC, the paid dl's started coming in after it was posted to the noiseguide forums. Those guys are a totally different sort of community than here, way more community/creative minded than here imo.
I'll probably change it to free download once December ends if that makes a difference to anyone.
>>
>>61287083
you can have it for me mate. deserved it.
>>
>>61287083
i was on the comp and paid you the majority of the money (if $13 was all you made) i don't think it's a conflict of interest. i was thanking you for your work in organizing this shit.
>>
>>61287083
didn't see the .txt with descriptions! could you post it please
>>
>>61287083
yeah i'm a little bit baffled that people have an issue with you making money. shit takes time, and time isn't free.

i offer my music for pay-what-you-want but, just like any body else i think, i'm happy when somebody decides that it is worth some money.

people seem to think that music has no value these days, and while i comply with that demand to a certain extent, i can't say that it doesn't give me courage to continue exploring and doing whatever if people make even a tiny financial contribution, like $1 isn't going to pay my rent or buy me dinner, but it's a symbol of appreciation.
>>
i'm going to start respraying and redesigning old tapes, which i will then record on to

so if you'd like something of yours recorded and designed, reply to this
>>
>>61287083
Organizer of the new comp here, I would love to be a part of your label if you were interested. I'm gonna be making a switch from using a DAW to using pedals/contact mics within the next month, so I'm gonna be taking my music more seriously than ever.

Also for everybody else, I received a few tracks today over my email, but I haven't been on my computer all day (currently on my phone), so I'll be uploading tracks to the Bandcamp (the page is still private though) once I get back home from Starbucks. Thanks for all the submissions, guys!

>>
>>61289942
As long as you know what you're doing, are actually organizing, and aren't just sloppily putting effects on something, I see no problems with it. I use an analog synth through an interface and reverb/delay/distortion/feedback effects modules from my DAW often along with samples. I wouldn't use something like Audacity because you can just get immediate results (as far as I know at least) instead of fooling around with settings.

Alright yeah that looks good. We need an actual title for the release so it's not just "/noise/ comp" - what do you have in mind? I just thought of "In a Town Called". We should also decide for sure on what the subject of the cover will be. Something more conservative like the picture you used is probably a good call.
>>
>>61289994
>As long as you know what you're doing, are actually organizing, and aren't just sloppily putting effects on something

I use ableton (as well as many other things) some noise people seem so dead set against computers, when what you just said up there applies to a lot of them, except with shitty boss guitar pedals.

which analog synth do you use?
>>
>>61290833
Minibrute SE. I've used virtual synths too, but I prefer the layout of the Minibrute. A lot of those against computers prefer live performance, and that's justified. I'm not one to do anything live and prefer meticulously organizing and constructing stuff. I understand those who want to stay completely analog, but it's not a huge deal to work digitally if you know what you're doing.
>>

>>61290709

>>
>>61291008
I know that's not the cover to be used, I was saying something like that is good and that his sense of design seems appropriate.
>>
>>61291008
Nope I misunderstood. I thought your album cover was being interpreted as the compilation cover.

You can design it yeah mane. I also am somewhat confident in my graphic design. I did my covers for pagoda mast. But I just have a fetish for that lack metal don't and old photos soo yeah
>>
>>61291028
***black metal font

>>
>>61291028
Old photos are good, I wouldn't recommend the "black metal" fonts though. They're used everywhere and often look really trite and cheesy. Something conservative I think would fit best for the compilation.

I'm mostly focusing on releasing regional things, so if you're anywhere near Australia I'd be interested. The net label portion of the project however I could maybe stretch to include global releases, or distribute some physical releases. You can contact me via the NBND Bandcamp, or my soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/minimalimpactnoise

I'll probably also come up with something to add to the comp too. Are we able to submit something from multiple projects we may have?

What's a good starter noise record?

I love noisy music like Zeni Geva, ambient noise, The Downward Spiral and a shitload of metal. But I could never last through a whole Merzbow album, kinda don't see the appeal.

Well, as a general rec, I think you'd like Chu Ishikawa's soundtracks to the first two Tetsuo movies; they're basically noisier industrial music.
If you like that, you might try Grim - Folk Music.

As general recs, there's always the commonly-recommended Yellow Swans - Going Places and Kazumoto Endo's While You Were Out. Another good one is Love and Noise by C.C.C.C.
Further, if you like Nine Inch Nails, you could go into Coil (who have some noisier releases), and further back into other first wave and post-industrial, maybe tying it into Whitehouse or TG, which would eventually feed you into more pure noise. For those two, I'd recommend Great White Death and Journey Through a Body, respectively.

In general, I would say that you should listen to the kinds of things that you like, of course.

Hey dude I do graphic design for a living so I hope you don't mind if I have a small critique for you that I think would really sharpen up this already-great layout. The paragraph of text is really nice, but I would justify the text as opposed to have it set left like you have it. There should be a setting for that on whatever program you're using. That way the paragraph makes a nice clean square. The only thing you'd have to watch out for is that sometimes you get really awkward spacing in between words, which you can try to fix by kerning and tracking the type or re-shaping the text box. Excuse the unsolicited feedback but I really like your cover and want to see it as good as it can be.

I kind of like the cognitive dissonance between a sort of sentimental title and the idea of it being a noise record. It's acknowledging the truth in the theme despite any of the attitudes held within. However you interpret the theme through noise, your home is your home.

Window Listener here,
I was told there was a noise compilation being made.
What do I do to get on it? Just wondering.
>>
>>61309904
You might be a bit late but
" During the last thread, a couple people and I came up with an idea to make another noise comp, except this time we'll be making tracks based around a theme.

The theme will be to make a song about the town you live in. You can make this be harsh noise, a noise wall, or just plain old noise, whatever floats your boat. Tracks should be 10 minutes long at most and you are limited to 1 track. Titles should be in a "(Town name) Is a Town Where (Something about your town)" format, but if you can come up with something creative and cool, then that's fine as well!

Email your track to [email protected]. If for any reason it won't let you email your track (file size limits?), just put your song in a zippyshare or mega download and email it. This will be the bandcamp it appears on: https://noisecomps.bandcamp.com/. I'll get the design set up before the comp comes out. Feel free to include your bandcamp in the email if you want, and I'll put it in the description on the final product.

For times sake, I would say let's make the due date for tracks be January 1st, but we can discuss it in the thread if you guys feel like you want more time."

No-input mixing, contact mic feedback and digitally manipulated field recordings recorded directly to an old tape, with no post-production aside from volume raising in Audacity.

I have a new harsh noise project, moving forward from the somewhat "noisy" ambient techno I had been doing for the past two and a half years, Dwn Cx/Downgrade Complex. I'm playing in Providence on January 6th with Tinnitustimulus and some other cool folks.
