what are some of the best produced albums of all time?
Kevin put a shitload of work into this one.
my beautiful dark twisted fantasy
>>61261477
Graceland
Aja
The list goes on ..
>>61261477
Who's this semon demon?
>>61261534
so overrated it's not even funny. just by posting this album i know this is the only shoegaze album you know.
>>61261534
Who the fuck is kevin and yes i do love this album
>>61261566
It's the only shoegaze album that matters
RATM s/t
you can say what you like about the music, but the production is amazing
>>61261566
Shut the fuck up
>>61261477
Pet Sounds
Aquemini
Remain In Light
Another Green World
James Blake s/t
Bonobo's The North Borders
>>61261566
>just by posting this album i know this is the only shoegaze album you know.
This is what contrarians actually believe
>>61261555
Nice
Avalon by Roxy Music
*raises hand*
steely dan

>>61261597
>>61261608
Thanks for letting me know I'm right. Entry level plebs telling me they know anything about music always makes me laugh.
this
:^ )
MESH - Piteous Gate
Also
Arca - Mutant
>>61261624
*lowers le hat*
Sgt pepper, pet sounds, astral weeks for the classics. Its hard to say for modern music. Maybe Kid A because Godrich would take part in the sessions as more than just riding faders. No, not joking and not trying to be plebian.
>>61261623
Aja is masterpiece tier, friend.
>>61261665
yes
>>61261624
>he worships a genre based on a single album
whatever you say sensei
Topnotch
>>61261699
too bad it's so shitty though
>>61261477
Blackwater Park
Not personally a huge fan of the album but I thought RATM's self-titled album is considered one of the best produced albums of all time in rock atleast?
I know it's commonly used to test sound setups for this reason
>>61261477
not joking.
>>61261477
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
>>61261624
>caring about people's music taste
Any Dre album
>>61261847
>caring about my opinion
*giggles*
>>61261739
I think the rapping is bad, but the production is amazing.

>>61262040
that one stinks though
both of Duster's
Sonic youth - a thousand leaves
Toe - the book about my idle plot on a vague anxiety
TMV - Deloused in comatorium
George Duke - Face the Music
>>61262164
>TMV - Deloused in comatorium
An album that a lot of us use as reference for great sound/mixing is The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd.
>>61262180
on of the best produced album. the album got everything you need in music
>>61262243
Don't get me wrong, I love the album; the production is absolute shite though, anon.
>>61261534
>distorted noise and shitty muffled voice
>good produced
>>61262264
you love it even though the production is shite to you? i think youre just being contrarian here for no reason
>>61262389
Because as long as it's not like its recorded through a tin can and I enjoy the music I'll listen to it. And it's not even like it's my opinion, even Omar and Cedric dislike the production, it's just objectively poorly produced. Do you hate albums with fantastic production?
This one right here is probably one of the top 5 of all time.
Kashmir hits like a truck, The Wanton Song moves like a stampede, Down By The Seaside is one of the comfiest songs ever, In The Light is one of a kind, The Rover sounds huge, Trampled Under Foot sounds heavy yet funky and much more.
>>61262133
This is very true
>THERE AINT NO REASON WHYY
uk - s/t
jim orourke - eureka
the cars - s/t
elp - brain salad surgery
ok go - otbcots
wobbler - rites at dawn
phil collins - face value
sufjan - illinois
spock's beard - v
>>61261692
I kind of agree
1930 and Oersted are also fucking amazing when it comes to production
>>61262362
i-it's supposed to sound like that dad!!
>>61261534
I blew out my eardrums listening to I Only Said with apple earbuds :( who deaf here
>>61262540
This. Though I think Houses of the Holy has better production, songs like Kashmir and and In the Light.
>>61261536
no
>>61261809
yes
>>61262194
fantastic album, but no
The Fragile, Nine Inch Nails
Produced by Trent Reznor and Alan Moulder. I don't think Flood was involved at this point.
>>61262975
Honestly, most of NIN's albums are really solid. Not a huge fan of Year Zero or The Slip, but yeah.
With Teeth (Bleedthrough) is pretty cool.
Pet sounds, lonerism, Pygmalion, disintegration, wondrous bughouse
Not the best albums but all of these have top notch production
>>61261589
>>61261809
>>61262540
>>61262975
All of this are objectively well produced.
>>61263028
Lonerism is really awesome, I haven't listened to all of it consecutively, but I love Backwards.
>>61261809
I really can't stand Rage, but only because of Zach's voice and lyrics. I greatly respect them in terms of musical talent, and I enjoy Audioslave every once in a while.
incredible for its time
>>61261534
this is one of those weird cases where the sound design is great on a conceptual and performance level, but the production is actually quite poor. sadly a high-end speaker system makes it harder for me to enjoy this album
>>61262164
shit album and production. lol xd
>>61261477
wHERE the fuck is Pet Sounds and OK Computer
>>61263309
Someone mentioned Pet Sounds >>61263028
OK Computer is nice, Kid A is really solid too in terms of Radiohead.
Listening to this right after listening to Highway 61 Revisited is bizarre, sounds like there's 20 years of audio technology being developed between the two
>>61261536
Yes
I think this might be one of the earliest examples of objectively perfect production
>>61262243
that album is a great example of not good production
What are you even basing this off of?
wholly shit thread.
plebtier taste all around.
steve albini is the best producer in rock by such a large stretch it's hilarious and sad.
posting albums to listen to for max appreciation of his work
>>61264998
very true
10/10 album also
>>61261624
Shoegaze is the worst genre ever, kill yourself idiot.
>>61261560
Layla
she posts here
Highway 61 Revisited, Abbey Road
>>61261566
Why would you listen to something else after the genre has been fully perfected in that album?
>>61261699
this
>>61261739
i thought it was shitty at first too, after listening to it alot i actually think its pretty good
also pic related is my favorite album of all time, the production feels so nostalgic for some reason. Truly great sounds
>>61261477
This is a glorious piece of work
>>61265207
pretty sure theres a part where you can hear them giving eachother instructions on a that album.
>>61265274
how is that a bad thing
do you like to pretend your albums are made by robots?
steve albini is a genius because he ascribes to the philosophy "the perfect is the enemy of the good". he doesn't want to make a "flawless" album. he just wants to make as pure a recording as he can.
albums he records are the closest thing to having the band play a show for you, personally.
Not only one of the best mixed live albums, one of the best mixes I've heard
>>61262720
kek you can't be serious
Jon Hopkins - Immunity
Jon Hopkins - Insides
Jon Hopkins - Asleep Versions
Jon Hopkins - Contact Note
Death Grips - Exmilitary
Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mind
Jon Hopkins - Honest Words
The Olivia Tremor Control is what I'd consider a triumph of lo-fi recording. Great production with a lot of depth and nuance. Either of their full-lengths would be good, but Black Foliage has more interesting production, I feel.
The absolute pinnacle of production.
especially the remaster
>>61265198
THANK YOU
I love the sound of anything that Nigel Godrich produces, like Beck's Sea Change or Radiohead's stuff. Generally it just sounds great, but there are so many little clever details that only other audio engineers will notice.
Big Star's first album, and to a lesser extent, the rest of their work.
>>61263028
>>61263154
Currents has better production than Lonerism
>>61261477
Who is this weenie genie?

>>61261828
>>61261842

Objectively fantastic production here.
>>61266246
>Currents has better production than Lonerism
That's hilarious
First time I heard Take It In walking home from a party shitfaced it felt like I was dancing with god
Most of Zappa's work is very well produced, most notably Joe's Garage and You Are What You Is
The Kraftwerk remasters sound amazing
>In which people randomly post albums they like without knowing anything about production
Revolver
Endtroducing
All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors - Turning Into Small
Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Trials in the Radio Age
Autechre - Draft 7.30 & LP5
The Psychic Paramount - Gamelan Into the Mink Supernatural
Heroin - self titled 12"
This Heat - This Is 1
Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
The best production I remember from what I've heard.
>>61266246
Kek, sure it does.
Even Kevin Parker described it as unlistenable
The last album before she properly got into synths and samplers. Beautifully recorded instruments and great songs.
this as well as Earth 2
>>61263184
sgt is incredibly produced, period. they knew what they were doing by the 60s already
>>61261536
best production on any hip-hop album ever
OK Computer.
Bjork, Vespertine. What a wonderful, immersive, thick sound that has.
>>61268419
ye any album made in the last ~20 years by an artist that popular, is gonna be well produced.
the sound on this for example is god-tier
same goes for any Michael Jackson album
stuff like this is an anomaly. metal shouldn't sound this good
>inb4 "metal"
>>61262581
1930 is GOAT tier, I agree.
anything by steven wilson, you can say anything about the composition, but the production is unbelievable
>>61268218
this
How has this thread gone this long without this?
>GOAT drum sound
>perfect, crisp compression on guitars and keys
>horns sound so good
>balance and mix are perfect
>cleanest mastering you'll ever hear
shit sounds like it was made in a vacuum tube

yes
>>61268554
BOOSH!
this
>>61267330
Lol they ran out of money producing the record halfway through. The last half of the record is all demos
>>61269095
Love this shit
>>61268218
I don't know what I hate more... Comic Sans, or the actual font they used...
>>61268218
>Hi Fi album
>that comic sans version
kek
>>61269197
I like the font they use just fine, the comic sans is great though
>>61269241
It's fucking hilarious, that's for sure. I might just replace my cover with that just because the gradient is nice and smooth.
The production on this is insane. Shoutout to The Roots
>>61268283
Yes
>>61269289
I like the uneven gradient though :(

Butch Vig was a seriously fantastic producer but got worse the past few years, loudness just kind've overtook him
>>61270723
you clearly havent heard Young Thug
This is going to be controversial but for me 13 by Blur has something really special, it's one of my favourite earphones experiences.

this and the first album are so great to listen to

Metallica?
>>61270723
Hip hop has the best production, moron, let me guess you listen to heavy metal?
>>61261536
Everybody says that it has great production but it doesn't sound especially well-produced to me at all. I mean, aside from the music not being very good, there's nothing really wrong with it I guess.
Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
>>61262133
is the title and image a giles corey tribute?
>>61268240
This and The Chronic too. Compton has a pretty varied soundscape as well. Also, pic related.
>>61270887
the real answer
pic related is probably the best produced for it's genre.
>>61266246

>>61261477
who is this qt 3.14
>>61273637
>>61273654
Though you're right I wouldn't consider it best of all time, its far too rudimentary
Criminally underrated in the production department. The bass and drum sounds on Death Church really give off a pristine, almost grandiose sound, but it still hits so hard.
you know it's true
Spilt Milk - Jellyfish
Pet Sounds - Beach Boys
Purple Rain - Prince
Voodoo - D'Angelo
Black Messiah - D'Angelo
Total music noob here, how do I judge production? And can I do that with my shitty ports pros or do I need high-end stuff to do that?
>>61274050
just look up the pitchfork score
>>61261589
You and everyone else who's posted pleb tier production are cancer. I knew /mu/ would eat this type of shit up though because you're a bunch of fucking hipsters who don't actually know anything about production.
>>61274050
Hard to explain. Things like clarity and prominence of bass, EQ, compression, volume level, panning, guitar tone all contribute, but like all creative endeavours so much of this comes down to personal taste. You don't need a multi million dollar studio but some high end headphones will set you on your way. Personally I think the performances are part of the production values and if your instrumentalists are playing like shit then that's a negative.
>>61273971
get outta here!
>>61261536
Well produced, but with shite mastering
>>61262111
tbf Kanye West is a great producer, he just makes music /mu/ doesnt cater to and is a complete dickhead.
