Death grips
New Candys
P.A.L
Primus
Boris
Blind Melon

It's been a big year for me
>>
The Black Angels - Psych.
Allah-Las - Seriously good garage rock, some surf elements.
Bad Liquor Pond - Psych again
Naxatras - Greek hard psych band, just released an album this year
Guantanamo Baywatch - Fun surf rock band, saw them at a show locally
Thee Oh Sees - Garage rock.

I find this hard to believe. Surely you knew who Les Claypool is, right?

No. But maybe you could recommend me some accessible, entry level hardcore.

The Chameleons
The Sound
Comsat Angels

Joy Division
New Order

I kind of only started actively pursuing music as a hobby this year. I'm 26 and I feel like I should have been doing this in my teens rather than playing vidya games. I've been making up for lost time though (went to my first gig this September, and I've been to a total of 8 since then).

Black Flag - My War
>>

There was one song I thought was theirs that turned out to be from a different band, so yeah I'd heard the name but this year i heard Shake hands with Beef.

Also Tweak Bird and Liars
>>
>>61247091
Ignore that dude and listen to American Nightmare/Give up the Ghost and True Love. They're the best hardcore bands you'll ever find outside of the classic Minor Threat and Black Flag stuff.

PRINCE!

After hearing family members/friends mentioning/raving about him, I then started reading Questlove's autobiography. He's a big fan, and his thoughts of Prince interested me.
Also at the end of last year, I started listening to D'Angelo when he released the Sugar Daddy single. He's also a Prince fanboy.

I started talking to my family, asking for recs, they told me Purple Rain. I gave it a shot, thought it was not bad, but checked out other albums.

It was Dirty Mind that first struck a true chord with me. I love that late night, DIY sound it has. When you were mine is the blueprint for any 80s pop hint.
I then made my way to 1999, with it's unique combo of funk and new wave. I loved it's icy synths and the grooves. (DMSR is still my favorite song)

After that, I dove right in. Had to buy his albums too, as the pirated copies I had were panned oddly.

Holy shit, though, that 14 minute version of computer blue is insane. It's track 1.

this was the year I discovered classical via the Juilliard String Quartet (from '57-'70)
I discovered flamenco through El Borrico, then Camaron de la Isla (Paco de Lucia is all over his albums)
this was the year I finally got into Cuban music - I found a link to the Arsenio Rodriguez box "El Alma de Cuba" (I'll be listening to that forever); I got some sweet son compilations, and found a Soul Jazz release called Afro-Cuba: Tumba Francesca which feels like encountering a culture's greatest hits of a powerful music style, centuries-old
I finally got into bebop after putting off that music from the 40's and early-50's (pre-album means compilations - good thing there were good compilers during the 90's & early 00's)
great year. and that leaves out all the great films I watched this year, and the books I got around to reading.

Great. What's your fave Ae album so far?
>>
>>61260026
You really should watch his other stuff, especially Health Reminder.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfAul2isPfo
I was obsessed with the guy for a while and still am. He has this perfectly surreal and dark sense of humor that I love.
For more stuff like this, also see: The rest of the Health Reminder series, DrillbitHead, BurnFaceMan...

A lot of his stuff is just experimentation, a lot of which shows up later in Salad Fingers if you pay attention.

I saw them live a couple of weeks ago in Rotterdam. Great fucking shit man, best concert i've been to this year. Had a chat with the producer, super chill guy. Great 'band'.

Who?

David Firth has a dark sense of humor. It's hard to do something original these days, but he surely did it.

I watched that episode. Damn...

My first hip-hop/rap album ever, unless you count exmilitary. I actually really liked it, but I'm not sure where to go from here

Other artists from this year:
>Karen Dalton
>Muddy Waters

You must listen to the classics: Nas, Dr Dre, Eminem, Public Enemy, De La Soul, Outkast, 2Pac, Beastie Boys, Run D.M.C., The Sugarhill Gang. Afrika Bambaataa, Snoop Dogg, NWA, DJ Shadow (instrumental hip-hop), and so on.
>>
>>61268953
Could you just throw a few albums at me? I've actually listened to the Nas album like once and liked it
>>
>>61268983
Goodie Mob - soul food
Outkast - aquemini
Big L - lifestylez of da poor and dangerous
Tribe Called Quest - midnight marauders
The notorious big - ready to die
Start there.

Not him, so just to speak on a few artists: run dmc is more rock combined with rap, bambata is more electronic influenced, sugarhill, public enemy, and the beasties are more about lyrics than the beat, and you prob know enough about the rest, like nwa or eminem.

I've started to fall off. Really dug into Destroyer, Frank Zappa, kraftwerk, and tangerine dream - not much else. Need to reignite the spark
>>
>Check out all this entry-level crap I'm listening xD
>>
>>61268983
Ready to Die by Bigge. It's pretty similar to Nas's Illmatic, which, if you liked, you'd probably like joey badass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRfQGXFRr30
>>

Illmatic
The Chronic
The Marshall Mathers LP
Fear of a Blank Planet
3 Feet High and Rising
Stankonia
All Eyez on Me
Paul's Boutique
Raising Hell
Sugarhill Gang
Planet Rock
Doggystyle
Straight Outta Compton
Endtroducing...

All, essential hip hop albums. I would add also Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). I didn't like it but maybe you do.

Oh shit, thanks guys! I'll take note and give them all a listen.

I've been into Funk, Soul and Blues the past couple of years and just feel as though rap and hip-hop should naturally be my next step
>>
Built to Spill
Rome
William Basinski
Suicide
Arnold Dreyblatt
Asmus Tietchens
Om
Hijokaidan
Inquisition
New Order
Cloud Rat
Dolorian
Akhlys
Woven Hand

if my rym ratings for this year are anything to go by, i enjoyed these the most in addition to my usual suspects. i 'rediscovered' Om and Basinski (as i had heard but dismissed one piece in each's discog) but everything else was fairly new to me

>>61246921
>st. Vincent
>Tegan and Sara
As a Canadian I shamed myself by only just discovering the latter.
