What is the best Beatles song and why is it A Day In The Life?
>>
>>61230621
finally someone who agrees with me on this fucking board
>>
This thread is so welcoming to discussion OP.
>>
>>61230621
But everyone knows it's SHEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
The mighty mighty patricians of /mu/ may strike me down for this, but a Day in the Life absolutely floored me the first time I heard it. It was about eight years ago, I was fourteen and very early in my musical discovery, and listened to Sgt. Peppers. Not catching on to the record's ironic and self-aware tone, I took mang songs at face value so by the end of the record I had comfortably judges this as a light-hearted record. Then A Day in the Life comes on and shatters every preconception I ever had about the Beatles. I think many on /mu/ will fail to realize the song in that context, and it's place in history as one of the earliest experimental pop songs.
>>
"Three bars of 'A day in the life' still sustain me, rejuvenate me and inflame my senses and sensibilities." - Leonard Bernstein

"When I was 20, I worked at a hotel in a dance orchestra, playing weddings, bar-mitzvahs, dancing, cabaret. I drove home and I was also at college at the time. Then I put on the radio (Radio Luxemburg) and I heard this music. It was terrifying. I had no idea what it was. Then it kept going. Then there was this enormous whine note of strings. Then there was this colossal piano chord. I discovered later that I'd come in half-way through Sgt. Pepper, played continuously. My life was never the same again" - Robert Fripp
>>
The ending of the song always gets me, that high pitched noise and weird speech creeps the fuck out of me

>plebs still think Revolution 9 was bad
>mfw
>>
>>61230621

Why do people think this album is so good? It has barely any guitar in it, no vocals with delay and reverb, just a bunch of stupid horns and strings

That's not psychedelic, music hall tunes aren't trippy wtf
>>
>>61231039
>Wild Honey Pie
dude i love that its like proto- TMR
>>
>>61230989
but that's probably their best song
>>
>>61231158
it's a fucking great album you pleb, the only bad song was good morning good morning and maybe that weird sitar song
>>
>>61231165
I hate that song because it sounds like pewdiepie was singing it
>>
It's the Abbey Road medley.
I know it's 3 songs, I don't care
>>
>>61231528
dont you mean the medley ending (golden slumbers, carry that weight, the end? the entire medley consists on 9 songs
>>
Yeah, that.
Jesus, I love that ending
>>
>>61231627
yeah i know what you mean, abbey road is my fav album. anyways, im the guy that agreed with op, because a day in the life works just fine on its own (without good morning good morning / sgt peppers reprise), the medley ending on the other hand doesn't, each song needs the other song
>>
>>61230621
That's a funny way to spell Lady Madonna

What! Is the best? Beatles... song and why. Is it a day in the life?
Life the in. Day a it is why? And song, beatles best... the is what!

In my Life is awesome too. That harpsichord is so goddamn beautiful

>>
i think bohemian rhapsody is their best song
>>
Patrician coming through.

Yes I’ve heard A Day in the Life. George Martin did a great job of sticking two unfinished songs together and making it mildly interesting simply by adding an entire orchestra.
>>
When you get older and you've heard all their amazing groundbreaking stuff a million times, you appreciate more the smaller moments. Like this. Hey let's invent power pop in 1966 and also write a Spoon song with this next track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKRKpdvi1lA

Two words: DOG WHISTLE!
>>
>>61231158
>barely any guitar

Get your ears checked m8, the only tracks without Guitar are Mr. Kite and Leaving Home, you just can't listen to multi tracks for shit
>>
>>61231195
Good Morning Good Morning is based, did you know that song has ELEVEN tempo changes in like three minutes?

And that "weird sitar song" is one of the best Beatles song PERIOD, GO BACK TO /v/
>>
>>61231158
>implying tracks like Lucy in the Sky, Fixing a Hole, Mr Kite, Within You Without You, aren't psychedelic
>>
>>61232825
Man all those songs are fucking great, can someone tell me why plebs still call this album overrated?
>>
>>61230847
>Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da
>Long, Long, Long
>Revolution 9
>bad
>>
>>61232876
Plebs like to call the Beatles overrated in general, most can't put themselves in the context of listening to these songs amd hearing all the tiny quirks and innovations so uncommon at the time. It's usually 20-something contrarian 90s kids that won't be caught dead praising mainstream classics.
>>
>>61230847
why does everyone hate obla-di i dont think theres anything wrong w it
>>
>>61233050
Same here, I think it's a fun song that reeks of McCartney charm. It's too wacky to sound like straight music hall, but too traditional to be rock n roll, so it alienates basic people. The inconsistencies in the lyrics are fun too.
>>
>>61233050
i agree, it's catchy as hell and it's one of their entertaining "story" lyrics. I always thought it was one of the favorites among casual fans (and not so casual ones too).
>>
>>61232775
Good morning Good morning
always sounded really appealing to me
>>
>>61233292
It's a great fucking song, unrelentingly unique too.

NOBODY on /mu/ can pull up any other song even vaguely reminiscient of Good Morning Good Morning
>>
>>61230621
hey dude, not to be a dick or anything but you spelt glass onion wrong!

I really can't understand how somebody could think this. Don't pass me by deserves more hate, long, long, long is literally light years ahead of that dog shit.

The Beatles are super boring to me, but I do like at least four of their songs. In no particular order...

I'm A Loser, Here Comes The Sun, Good Day Sunshine, Help!
>>
>>61234078
Help! is what got me into The Beatles actually
>>
>>61230621
Do you guys get the feeling of a great explosion in the sky or something like that by the end of "A Day in The Life"?
>>
Maybe this is just my local station, but has anyone else found that A Day in the Life is the only Beatles song that gets played on classic rock radio? Their most unusual single gets played regularly on the arena rock/power ballad station
>>
>>61230621
Good Vibrations
>>
>>61234078
I don't get how you find them "super boring" but like those four songs. Not that they're bad, but they made tons of pop-rock songs in the same vein
>>
Across The Universe is my favorite Beatles cut
>>
>>61234214
The whole outro sounds very apocalyptic
>>
>>61234214
I get that feeling of the end of something with the last chord, maybe the end of life itself, it's easy to relate that feeling with the song title
>>
>>61234314
That's not even by the beatles it's a Marky Mark song
>>
>>61233050

Because they literally ripped off Offspring
>>
>>61233807
i know man
long long long is my favourite Beatles song
>>
SEXXXXXXXYYYYYY SADDDIEEEEEEE

WHAT HAVE U DONEEE?
>>
>>61234475
Or maybe something more simple: the end of that day in the life, the apolalyptic progression being all the problematic situations you had to live through that day, and the last piano chord being the conclusion to that day (going to bed to sleep, idk)

I dont know.. I feel enlightned listening to it. It's like you went through all that shit while getting glimpses of something big then it happened and it was so overwhelming that nothing else mattered anymore. Feels like dying and reborning.

A Day in the Life is not the best Beatles song.

It's Strawberry Fields Forever. It always has been Strawberry Fields Forever, and will continue to be so.

Stop saying it's A Day in the Life.

>Ringo is shit
When the drums in songs like Come Together and Ticket to Ride are so recognizable I could probably recognize them if someone air-drummed them, it proves Ringo is one of the most iconic drummers.
He drums for the feel in songs, not for technical prowess.
The coolest Beatle.

are you talking about within you without you? because im about to slap your shit for being such a pleb
>>
>>61231929
It was Paul's idea, Martin was a tool they used to make their music. An instrumental one, but She's Leaving Home is decent evidence that it was mostly them coming up with the ideas for him to transcribe for orchestral arrangements.

How did they do that?
>>
>>61241406
From wikipedia:
Most records have a locked groove at the end of each side or individual band. It is usually a silent loop which keeps the needle and tonearm from drifting into the label area. However, it is possible to record sound in this groove, and some artists have included looping audio in the locked groove. One of the best-known examples of this technique was The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967).
>>
>>61241430
Another one is on Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast begins and ends with a water faucet dripping which goes on endlessly.
