There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Learn that Image-Line is going to bring back graph editors eventually, and that you should just buy whatever you fucking want to buy though

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.

I have a broad question for the folks in this thread.

I asked in the last thread and got some good answers, so I wanted to ask one more time.

>How the fuck do you make a sexy song?

Like, for real. How do you make something that makes someone want to fuck to your song or because of your song.

That's what I want my genre to be. Just, "Songs to Fuck to" or "Songs that Put You in the Mood."

What are some characteristics that you've seen in music that are inherent to most, if not all, sexy songs?

Let me boil this down into some questions:

>What's your favorite sexy song?
>What makes it sexy?
>Is sexiness something that can be learned? How?
>What reading or listening do you recommend for learning the art of sexy music?

I just want to be boner fuel for people, /prod/. Is that too much to ask?

I analyzed all the music on my Clip and determined that the average sexy tempo is 117 BPM.

Not sure what you can do with that info, but whatever.

Thanks for the fb! I'm guessing the "high-end heaviness" is from the hall reverb that I have on the vocal track. It's probably carrying over for too long and making it a bit muddy sounding.

I was playing a show monday night and I lost control of my hardware and I fell into an absolutely horrifying loop through infinite delays and distortions and half the crowd was recoiling in pain. i tweaked a new knobs too far and it just turned into chaos. it's just me solo on stage with multiple synths and drum machines. i have a large pedal board and was feeling creative on stage and strayed away from my usual set.

i felt super amateur and a few of the guys i played with that night were off stage cracking up.

i just shut everything off and started over, in dead silence, when i finished there were a few claps here and there but mostly no reaction.

how do you guys recover from shit like this? i feel like i never want to go on stage again.
>>
>>61231206
just go on stage again, and try again

seriously, remember that there are guys playing covers in a shitty cover band, and they keep going even if they play like shit

This is just one fuck up, later it will be a cool/funny story to remember
>>
>>61231206
what kind of stuff do you usually play that could devolve into such a chaotic mess so quickly?

as for getting back into the gig game, it's probably just going to take some time. if you think it fucked up your reputation to any significant degree you could rework your setup/material and start performing under a different alias.
>>
>>61231294

i play psychedelic, beat oriented stuff with lots of heavy synth sections, ton of textures and pedals being used at once. i have one particular pedal that can be a bit unpredictable when there's a lot going on and i tweaked it a bit too far, panicked, tried to drop the pedals that go into it, this just made it worse. it all looped together and picked up a ton of gain and drowned everything out. it was awful.
>>
>>61231206
Turn it into a story you tell to your friends. Like, tell it to everyone, and soon it'll just be another quirky anecdote. And perhaps you'll get to hear about someone's else's fuckups.

That's when you get your ass back on the horse.

>>

still no chain saving and it's real iffy when controlling other hardware and software.
>>
>>61232092
Software isn't really an issue for me. As for syncing to hardware, it's going to be the master clock, kind of the point of the whole thing for me.
>>
>>61232203
well good luck with that. For your sake, I genuinely hope it's not as bad as I've heard when it comes to hardware sync. Hopefully they've got a good return policy if it is though.
>>
>>61230932

I asked for an Arturia Microbrute for Chrimbus and I really hope I get it.

I have written over 100 songs under different names and genres, but I always used FL Studio. I want to get into more hardware production. I have vowed to produce my next album with the following gear:

>Arturia Microbrute Synth
>Tascam DP006 recorder
>Electrix Warpfactory Vocoder
>Boss DR670 Drum Machine

Anyone know of anything I am missing?
>>
>>61232454
>Anyone know of anything I am missing?
really depends on your personal taste in gear and what kind of music you're going to produce.

you might want to look into getting a sampler and an fm synth so you've got both those bases covered though

Even if it's a shitpost, people use them in modular setups for gates and route the drums in as signals for envelopes or sidechains. This is how I see many vermona's and other vintage machines being used. Modern ones (that come with a sampler) are useful to keep everything centralized so you can easily tweak patterns to find something that works as a foundation for your percussion.

>Xenharmonic Piano Roll
Most DAWs allow you to do this, but usually you just adjust the fine tuning of each note. If you want all your A5s to be 25 cents flat, you select them all and make them 25 cents flat. It sounds like a mission but its pretty easy if your DAW is decent enough. Once one note has been retuned, whenever you copy that note the pasted note will be the same tuning, which helps.

FL handles this very easily, not sure about others, Reason supports this but its a bit more fiddly.

I've done a few microtonal tracks using FL. pretty easy to do, just choose a microtonal scale and retune all the notes you want flat or sharp in the piano roll (note fine pitch parameter)
pic related. In the piano roll you can only go in 10 cent increments, but if you use the channel fine pitch you can do 1 cent increments.

We used to play games here on prod to see if people could tell which note was 1 cent higher than the other.

what does sidechaining mean in simple english
>>
>>61239410
Using the amplitude of one sound to do something on another, like compression on the second sound while the first sound is >X dB, etc
>>
>>61239434
thats not simple enough
>>
>>61239410
the volume of the rest of the mix ducks out a little bit to accommodate one particular sound or set of sounds
>>
>>61239410
when your kick goes doof, the rest of the song goes quiet for a split second.

That way the kick cuts through the song.

This is side-chain compression, you can use other effects. Basically one sound controls another through an effect.
>>
>>61239410
Nothing.
Sidechain is the second input to an audio processor, so to speak.
For instance, a compressor may have a sidechain input for the peak detection circuit, which is then used to change the volume of the main input with the envelope of the sidechain input.

The term has since become synonymous with sidechain compression.

What do you guys think of algorithmic melodies?

Is it a lazy attempt to replace creativity?
>>
>>61240199
As someone who recently used ableton for years, don't switch to cubase. At least for me, it was very clunky and non-user friendly. I suggest BitWig. It rivals ableton in variety of features and is pretty smooth to transition to.
>>
>>61239781
Tips:
>keep a solid drum beat for at least 4 bars. Stop dropping hats or snares/claps randomly. It throws off the groove
>@ 0:35, the crash/cymbal needs some sort of reverb or delay to fill in the gap and needs a high freq shelf to get rid of some higher harsher tones
>sidechain the bass and lead to the kick
>select a different sound for the bass other than a sine wave and maybe drop the bass -12 semitones

I'm no pro, but hopefully this will give you some ideas
