What metal albums would you recommend to someone who wants to explore the genre? I'd like specifically some albums that don't have the nordic/viking sound if that makes any sense, from the past 10 years would be nice too. Also, can I have a short description of all the metal subgenres? I know there's a ton.

would you like something thats more violent or more cool

Violent: kinda cool but hard to groove to at the same time

Cool: much preferred. much easier to keep up with and seems like a lot more distinct from all of the quick, violent songs. pretty good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKxZY0DIxIk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKSU1W0ZUmQ
>Heavy metal
Hard rock but less blues
Distinction with the former often blurry ( for example that rainbow link and that black sabbath link have the same amount of blues in them... )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvgLj8pawGI ( a band considered prog metal or proto-prog metal whatever )
>Power metal
Faster heavy metal with fantasy, kitsch and harmonic minor scales. Also, high-pitched vocals

>Doom metal
Heavy metal but slower
Lost of subgenres some of them are here

As you can see subgenres blend into each other, a proper classification of genres in metal would just keep heavy, doom, black, thrash and death.

>Thrash metal
Fast heavy metal with a pinch of hardcore and a special kind of riffing i'd have trouble to describe accurately
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO_84C3fpuI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcjN5BNU9CY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6_zsJ8KPP0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAkpZ8ZENIs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tAbcWrrIQU

>Death metal
Angrier, heavier thrash metal. Also blasts and *growls*.
Many subdivisons
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbVdurzst6g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_cn9TVSi2o
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwuDhK_EV5k ( melodic death metal )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvoZBB79h58 ( brutal / technical death metal )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz4TkW7Q_GE ( technical / progressive thrash / death metal )
>Black metal
Angrier, darker thrash or heavy metal. Also blasts and tremolo picking
Many subdivisions
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85ielup_aPQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ACxklBLUqI ( (early) symphonic black metal )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3Ubctz2ywA ( rare case of black metal with clean vocals )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q78Teqr2T6E ( melodic black / death )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-kW-rxzJ_0 ( blackgaze)

>Symphonic metal
Metal with """"""""""""""""""""""""symphonic"""""""""""""""""""" elements but mostly just keys
Oftenly used with another style ex : symphonic black metal
When it just says "symphonic metal" it's 99% heavy symphonic or power symphonic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQVEAPjKae4 ( just fun cheese really )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GnwheJLtcs ( symphonic atmo-black )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppzVo8Unors
>>

(3/3)

>Progressive metal
Metal with progressive rock elements / Innovative metal / Dream theater clones
"Progressive" is used the same way as symphonic ( mostly )
I'll put avant-garde and experimental in there too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGRgAULYgWE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=986iAyQpr1U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUJQ5Kngw8g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo ( muh tools )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnV62xxrL_A ( milestone in dissonant, experimental metal, very harsh and not accessible )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDSbZUKMvtI ( progressive death metal - atheist was also progressive by the way )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ctBnNR0FaE ( JUST blend my genres up )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2mZVOd0jWY ( "circus-core" is often mistakenly thought as avant-garde metal , i'm probably the only one in /metal/ to like this for what it is : groovy, fun shit )

>Folk metal
Traditional folk elements
Can be used with other genres
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVJkVCWXe9Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv5_PtpgaUc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKsY9C5Hm-g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKz8dqMAu1Q ( folk / atmo-black )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx_8HBTsgGs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVIY7NvhynE

>Grindcore
Death metal with more crust punk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSKEgRcTO2c
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuzb11rM74k

>Metalcore/Deathcore
Mostly death melodic mixed with hardcore punk
The genre has evolved in unsuitable ways imo though good bands can be found, mostly far from the melodic side of it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0-FCmDcb0Q ( >muh converge )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrJOAZUCcqg ( asking for a petition to ban lyric videos )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFvoS9V-7ys

Also, djent is a thing it's basically people that copied this but with spacey feel and cute melodies :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx0klv82BDA

Probably forgot some things but well it's enough for today

great progressive / avant metal with jazz and a lot of other influences
>>
>>61197579
>>61198064
Seconding this, MoP->RTL->KEA->AJFA
Easy to listen and good at the same time makes perfect entry level
They are mostly thrash though, with some speed metal in KEA and Progressive on AJFA
>>
>>61197579
Mastodon and Opeth, it's what got me into it. Don't listen to them anymore, but I think they are fairly entry-level, but still good.

Go with Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye for Mastodon, and Still Life and Blackwater Park for Opeth.
>>
Anything from Death's discography. You can't go wrong with any of their albums.
>>

This is a terrible rec, OP, ignore this shit. First off, it's not metal, second off, it's not that good.

This is a great rec, OP, check that shit.
First off, it's metal, second off, it's that good.
>>
Not op but i listened to the "classics" and everything was pretty meh to me, i guess metal is not for me
I only like doom, post and stoner metal
