To be fair, the rate at which stainless steel frets eat string will pretty quickly outweigh the cost of fret work.

Why do some bass string brands have those red threads at the start while the others don't? To prevent it from being unwinded?

Pretty sure it's because it looks cool. I have never had mine unwinded, not even the ones that came with the bass, and I've used D'Addario strings after those. Pic is my bass at the store in 2k9 with its stock strings.

>>61197087
That picture looks like a quilted top.
>>
Just started playing guys and was wondering if there is any difference to a bolted neck to a solid? Does the bolted neck get loose eventually?
>>
>>61197087
I could never own such a pretty guitar. I don't even like guitars with binding lol. Kinda like it to look rugged. But that goes out the window if someone awesome plays a certain guitar.
>>
beginner here
just finished memorizing all the notes on the fretboard
what do i do with that now?
>>
>>61197073
Differences are negligible. What this implies that the output (amplifier) and player are vastly more important than the guitar itself.
>>
>>61197152
It won't get really get lose over time. It's just screws, nothing special, you might give them a tighten every few months. Some say there's a difference in tone but it's a small one in any case. Bolt on necks are easier to repair/replace and can be built cheaper.
>>
>>61197073
The fender sounds certainly richer. Gotta love the delusional faggots in the comment section.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against cheap guitars, in fact I own a Korean strat copy. But the Fender has that beautiful tone that's so hard to describe. The SX would probably sound the same with the same pickups though.
>>
>>61197170
But boy I hate 2Ts red and black. I hope they never paint them like that again. I repainted my tele from that. I only got the 2ts cuz it was the last p90 tele in stock.
>>
>>61197217
You did a decent job on the paint work.
>>
>>61197199
Yeah. I don't dig ceramic magnets, for starters. It's about time we got a really cheap company to rip off Seymour Duncan. I'm not a huge fan of gfs pickups, though the humbuckers are nice.

>>61197158
I must admit I'm a fan of binding, but it has to be right for the guitar, cream always looks good on black guitars, makes it look like sexy underwear
>>61197164
buy a 10 string, tune it down to drop A or somethign and smash open string djent music of course.

In all seriousness though, learn scale shapes if you havent already, anon.
>>
>>61197189
For a long term investment would it then be better for a fixed? I can spend up to 800 AUD and I have seen some nice ones
>>
>>61197233
Well it's got no clear coat, so it was pretty hard to mess up. Just aerosol. It's not perfect but you have to look really hard to find the dark spots. I went straight over the old coat, kinda wonder what it would look like if I added a contour now.
>>
>>61197275
bolt on necks are usually cheaper and some will argue sacrifices tone. personally I hate the feeling of a fenders bolt on neck and prefer the feeling of a solid body or through neck, though its down to personal preference entirely.
>>
>>61197275
Holy fuckaroo I have no idea how much money that is. Honestly get a cheapo, it sucks to have the pressure of an expensive instrument to make you feel like you have to practice. also, you don't want to worry about banging it all over, which will probably happen a little. You won't know what you actually want until you've been playing for a while. As far as set vs bolt on goes, one is not necessarily better than the other. I would consider a bolt on a better investment because it's easier to repair.
>>
>>61197152
>>61197275
There's pretty much no difference between a set neck and a bolt on provided they're both done to a good standard. Don't concern yourself too much over it.

Bad bolt ons can have bad access, but at $800 AUD I wouldn't worry too much.

>>61197322
>solid body
Set neck on that.

>>61197323
$800 AUD is just under $600 USD.
>>
>>61197322
I think by sacrifices you meant changes. :^)
But really, archtops "sacrifice" tone by dampening. You get less harmonics. But I love archtops.

I would look at a second hand PRS SE personally as theyre quite easy to playand great work horse guitars.

Oh, I was just posting pretty pictures, anon.
>>61197340
My verdict is that the wood / shape and everything in between does change the tone but the change from some features is so miniscule its not worth mentioning, of all the guitars I've played the biggest change in tone comes from pickups, amplifier and what you bash the strings with. Though that is just my verdict.
>>
>>61197368
Well, there are certain laws of physics at play that make wood and shape up to certain realistic measures not effect amplified tone. I don't want to pry, but there's a good lecture from a rude person about this if you're interested.

you're forgetting scale length and hardware. It's what makes fenders twang, specially with teles. It's also why a fat strat doesn't sound like a Les Paul.

Just decide what winding and magnet you want. Wire gauge is also important. Alnico 2 and 3 are the warmest sounding if I recall correctly. Humbuckers are more complicated than single coils, but the good thing about classic pickups is they have simple designs. Very reproducible.

Personally I like the sound of my bottleneck better. I was sleepy and I read your post wrong. The metal ones are nice it you get a really small partial one. You can't really make those too well. But I'd recommend making a slide out of a wine bottle neck. You get a very manageable, smooth tone. Not to aggressive. Wait a minute, I'm being stupid. Are you playing acoustic or electric?
>>
>>61197712
Well, I think he's right concerning build quality. I think there are differences in the specs they use though, which is silly but true. Mexico jazz basses even have different size pickups.
>>
>>61197713
I play steel string acoustic. I'm looking at instructions for the bottleneck one. This looks like some serious shit, glass cutters? Can a retard like me make this.
>>
>>61197748
yeah, but I'm pretty sure the hardware for MIM stuff is worse
they seem to operate on looser tolerances too, I see much more MIM bashing than MIA bashing (by their owners)
>>
>>61197756
I just did this. It broke pretty unevenly so I spent like an hour sanding after that. I put sandpaper on the floor and rubbed to slide on that. Just get a bunch of bottles so you can keep trying, and wear protective gloves. Wine bottles are thicker so it doesn't work as well. Be careful.
https://youtu.be/3yHR-8ftMt4
obviously put the string around the neck instead.
>>
>>61197831

guys i want to buy a new amp, just something for recording in my apartment. I'm choosing between an AC15 and a blues jr. i've tried listening to a clips on youtube etc. but i can't decide. So I've got a few questions for you: Which amp has the most consistent, quality wise? Which amp takes pedals best? What are the pro/cons of each amp?

I motstly play postpunky stuff
>>
>>61197927
I'm not the guy you replied to though, just a guy who's tried the method with no success. My uncle has pulled it off in the past though. I think the quality of the string is important.
>>
>>61197928
>Which amp is the most consistent, quality wise?
Line6 Spider
>>
>>61197831
>>61197890
You can just tie vodka soaked string around it for a few hours without burning it and tap it with a hammer/ blunt object, it'll smash cleanly off
>>
>>61197928
Both amps don't have an effects loop so if that matters to you, pass on them. You should definitely try them out since they aren't fully captured by audio recordings. It's way different hearing their sound bounce around in front of you. As for my 2 cents, i just bought an ac15c1 recently because its tone won out for me.

Don't listen to this pleb >>61197969

>>61198011

This sounds like a maxed out muff to my ears.

The core of the second clip was diffusion. It's a type of multi-delay that smears transients. I use it instead of reverb usually. Combine that with a bow and you're in business. Takes a bit of practice to get right though.

>>61199415
Quality isn't great haha. Definitely needs less gain and more low end. Are you using a Bitcrusher there or is it a function on that fuzz?

I am gradually finding out how much of a pain in the ass it is to order an instrument directly from the manufacturer.

Also, most people in the music retail industry are terrible shitty people, as far as I've seen. I'm talking rude to the point of hanging up on your face mid sentence. What the fuck.

So what do I do, /gg/? I can't order directly from Schecter. There are no retailors in my city that will order on my behalf. My only option is to contact their local distributor and hope they do business with particulars. My only other option is to order from ebay or reverb and get royally fucked by custom fees...

That's pretty normal. If you could order straight from them it'd negate the point of distributors and retailers.

Can't just order one from another store? I mean if you want an Ibanez in this country you can order it from Galaxy Guitars (Ibanez Guitar Centre) and he'll send it anywhere in the country.

Actually, if you're in the US, you can order directly from their online store. But I'm Canadian.

>Can't just order one from another store?
There's literally only one that I was even able to talk to. The only other retailer in the city that sells Schecter instruments (a whopping 5 of them) is large chain that just puts me on hold for 30 minutes.

I'm going to wait for the Christmas rush to end and try again.

It's actually not all that bad. Lots of stuff to be found in your local classifieds.

However, there's nothing like Guitar Center. The various local chains don't step on each other's feet. They all carry Fender and Ibanez but there's usually one or two vendors for the other medium/large brands. Anything boutique is a special order.

My problem is that I'm looking for a specific pickup configuration that only Schecter and Sandberg are selling as far as I've seen. And for some reason there's very little demand for MM/P basses.

Start learning about the most used chords and their shapes-majors, minors, Major 7s, minor 7s, suspended 4s and suspended 2s.
All of that sounds more complicated than it really is. Just practice creating chord shapes, making sure all of the notes sound out clearly when you strum, and switching between them smoothly. Once you can do that, start making barre chords by using your index finger as a movable nut and making the standard chord shapes with your other fingers. That ability opens up A LOT of possibilities for using the guitar musically.

Hey /gg/

I have a tele and I play extreme metal. I'm looking to hire a tech to get me a new nut, but I'm stuck trying to decide what string gauge to get. I don't really shred way up high and need light ass strings for +5th bends or some crazy shit, I mostly just play fast, thrashy stuff in my comfort zone of below the 12th fret.

Anyways, I play in E-standard, and I've been considering going with 12 gauge strings (with a wound 3rd string, of course) to get a thicker tone, and I think I can handle it as my calluses are fucking solid. Any concerns?

The heavier strings you use will change how the tech will need to set up the guitar. I'd suggest trying out 10s or 11s before using something as big as 12s with a 3rd wound on a tele with it's shorter scale. Those large strings will have loads of tension and really mess up the intonation if not set up properly.

Anyone ever use Joyo pedals? Are they a decent clone of other, more expensive MXR type boxes?

I really like that they're true bypass.

And extremely cheap at 30ish usd each.

I'm not going to be traveling or gigging with them so the reviews I've read saying the housing seems weak isn't much concern to me, just tone at this point.

I would put them on a similar tier as digitech in sound quality, the cases/switches feel a bit chinzy though. Don't play a tele then.

Seriously, the whole "you need heavy strings to get good tone" is incredibly overplayed, especially when it comes to super compressed high gain sounds.

If you really want to stick to E standard on a Fender scale guitar with heavy strings you also really run the risk of losing the crunch from your palm mutes due to the high tension.

For now I'd say go with:

And the set of EMGs in that particuliar case

I think you're looking for a PJ or MM/J. From what I know about the bassist who play genres you listed, it's pretty much anything goes.

You have a ton of options in that price range and what you get will mostly depend on aesthetics and feature sets.

Good brands to look for that sell these pickup configurations in that price range are Lakland, Schecter, Yamaha and of course Fender and Ibanez.

I'd highly suggest you try out anything before you buy it.
