They weren't. 1970s is my favourite decade for music.
The 1980s did see the wide proliferation of rock (sub-)genres, as well as the emergence of hip-hop and modern electronic music (i.e. techno, house, and everything afterwards).
The 1990s were objectively inferior.

the 90's were the most diverse decade in the 20th century though. Noise rock, experimental electronic music, dance music, golden age hip hop, contemporary classical, shoegaze, ect, ect
the 70s were better on a industry level probably, because more musicians had formal training, but punk really opened up the field for different styles of music (at least with regard to dissemination)
obviously what you're more into is a matter of opinion but the 80s and 90s just have more music and, like you were saying, more types of music
