OF ALL TIME!
pic related. i love this dude. even though hes not dead yet, he gets my vote
No other choice for me
>>61178234
ugh. so predictable.
he was awesome but not very spontaneous. i like keith moon better for that period
Greg from Deerhoof
>>61178370
meg white? that one girl drummer
>>61178317
>lashes out on anon for picking "predictable" John Bohnham
>picked fucking Jimmy Chamberlain AKA the most obvious "go-to" drummer of any rock band
Kill yourself immediately, poser.
Pic related is my choice
Chris Cutler (Henry Cow, Slapp Happy, Art Bears)
>>61178414
Jimmy is the go-to drummer, now?
I didn't get the memo.
Btw, faggot, stuart copeland is good but very, very, very routine. very boring after a few listens.
>>61178478
He's the go-to 90s drummer definitely
>OH MY GOD JIMMY CHAMBERLAIN IS SO GOOD HE PLAYS SO FAST AND ENERGETIC
If you find Copeland repetitive you just don't know a single thing about drumming.
>>61178503
Copeland's style in 2 words: off beat
>>61178521
>I'm gonna baselessly trash the greatest drummer from the greatest band of his era NYANYA
I hope you're not a drummer because you must be total garbage.
>>61178543
Rude.
>FAVORITE drummer
>MEINS BETTER CUNT
never change /mu/
>>61178345
this
Blake Richardson of BTBAM has been my favourite for a long time now.
I've never been able to fault anything about this playing and his creativity is just mindblowing to me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJRoZdGVpU8
>>61178678
that's pretty much perfect drumming. in terms of a clinic, thats it. in terms of stuff that inspires, not so much. but good stuff anyway.
>>61178788
what band?
>>61178818
Can
Bill Bruford desu
dat drumming on "one more red nightmare"
>>61178694
I guess it depends on perspective, as a reasonably shit drummer myself, he's inspired me massively. A hell of a lot more than any other drummer I've been into.
>>61178925
cant find the original on youtube, only covers. currently listening to the cover by "Realm".
>>61178503
go to 90s drummer is Dave Grohl
Jimmy's fucking awesome and deserves to be recognized for it
awful traditional technical skill, still fav
Always loved Mike Portnoy, especially in Liquid Tension Experiment. His solo at the end of Finally Free is just stellar, dude has a real amazing feel for the groove and being in the pocket, especially for a metal guy.
>>61178950
>go to 90s drummer is Dave Grohl
no he isn't and Sean Kinney is better than both.
>>61179043
>dat no excuses intro
Severely underrated drummer
>>61179043
I wont say he's in the elite-tier, but definitely a talented drummer.
>>61178370
THIS
>>61178390
and i hope that was bait, anon...
>>61178944
kek they butchered it
stupid metalfucks
>>61178694
You should've said "stuff that moves you" instead of "stuff that inspires"
>>61179248
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFCJs_WvsG4
all my favorite rock guys have been mentioned so how about some jazz?
Billy Cobham
Dennis Chambers
Tony Williams
Elvin Jones
oh also jon theodore for rock.
Panda Bear
idk if anyone else here has seen Pianos Become The Teeth live but their drummer is fucking amazing. some of the best and most outshining drumming ive ever heard
>>61179304
link?
>>61179043
How exactly is he better?
Jon Karel
guy is goat
>>61179447
his playing is more loose and not over-extended. it's well within the limits of the songs and not flashy while also being technically flawless.
>>61179522
I agree, but because he got a different style of drumming means he's better?
>>61179248
This is the only real answer
His drumming on Out To Lunch is some of the best shit ive ever heard
>>61179542
Better than Grohl, who is a mediocre drummer and an even more mediocre guitarist. Chamberlain is more debatable because Corgan pushed him to his absolute limit time and time again while Cantrell pretty much stayed in the same bluesy wheelhouse for their whole "peak career". I guess it comes down to personal preference then but I think Chamberlain had more misfires than Kinney, like most things on Machina .
>>61179578
Yep, once again I agree. I personally prefer Chamberlain, I wont dive into exactly why, but I just love his drumming on Siamese Dream. Grohl is mediocre overall and in the bottom out of these three. Altho I must admit that the drums on Smells Like Teen Spirit are trickier and more genius than most people think.
Damon Che
I haven't listened to Don Caballero in quite a while so I don't have a song on top of my head that emphasizes his talent, so here's a random Don Cab song instead.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik0TnIwDbk4
Not necessarily a favourite, but a lot of fun to watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fz7-l30wxJU
Also:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17admjhbt2s
>>61179625
Chamberlain's drumming on Gishis also particularly inspired. The dude had such talent early on, Corgan is extremely lucky he found him. Iha and Wretzky were competent and good at doing what they were told but as long as Billy had Jimmy they were unstoppable.
>>61179628
Hell yeah bro. Here is an awesome track by Don Caballero where Damon is just lit.
>>61179681
woops
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kle9RIcllpM
>>61179659
That's the story of Smashing Pumpkins right there. You a fan, by the way?
I really really love Brian Chippendale.
I mean, listen to the drums on the live version of Ride the Skies, I haven't heard any other noise rock drummer like that.
>>61179681
Don Caballero is just an all round awesome band, and I'd consider Ian Williams to be an underrated guitarist both in his playing and occasionally unusual technique (the tapping while keyboarding thing)
>>61179705
Yeah, I like the Pumpkins up to and including Adore (which I thought was an affront to everything I loved at the time because, really, a drum machine?!), but Adore actually has some good tunes on it. I can't get into Machina or Zeitgeist. Pisces Iscariot is my all-time favorite B-Sides album to the point where it should be considered a real album of theirs.
Without a doubt Thomas Haake
Despite beeing in one the heaviest mands around (Meshuggah) he can show lots of finesse.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-nTcMqF_54
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjzoGjyMFOM
>>61179740
Adore is my second favourite by them. The goth songwriting Billy does on it is gripping. Pisces Iscariot is probably one of the greatest B-Sides album from the 90's. I wish tracks like Hello Kitty Katt and Frail & Bedazzled made the cut on Siamese Dream. It would make the album tougher/even out the softness imo. I didn't enjoy Zeitgeist or Machina, but I must admit that Oceania was a step in the right direction for Corgan.
>>61179737
Definately agree about Ian Williams. Don't see that guy mentioned anywhere, but he is truly outstanding and unique. I've tried to figure out some of his tapping techniques out on guitar myself and it really grinds my gears because it's almost impossible.
Brian Chippendale. I'm not convinced he only has two arms.
Chamberlain is great too, but fsrfrom my favourite. That said, his drumming on Geek USA might be my favourite drumming on any song ever.
It's funny how Zach Hill used to be mentioned all the time in these threads Pre-DG but now there's too much risk of hardcore memeing.
>>61179848
Well, Zach's work on Hella is fucking amazing, but now he is just a mememaster.
Underrated as hell.
>>61179574
he's the reason i listen to miles in the sky.
Greg Fox for sure, all his stuff is great and he can nail moeller technique
Bully me all you want but I still love this guy. I did find him through Birdman, so I do understand that I should kill myself soon, but that's the facts jack. I love his ideology about "telling a story" with each phrasing. To me, he's a nice balance between the free jazz and post-bop world. His chaos actually has control behind it, which gives it more power imo. I think I fell in love with the sound of his kit too.
His solo stuff is best imo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUC98v_r-yc
>>61180259
Bully you? More like "bully for you" because that's a patrician-ass pick.
>>61180345
aww c:
How are you all not in love with Marco?
>>61180407
he a shit
>>61180551
at least he's a happy guy >:(
Brian Chippendale
>>61178345
he's a close second for me. if his recorded stuff was as insane as he is live it'd be tied.
Fite me
>>61178983
Who?
>>61180584
also the kid from Lord Snow is fucking inhuman, always forhet to mention him
>>61179848
Zach has always been really boring to me. He just wails on the snare.
>>61179718
listen to black pus
>>61180259
>>61180345
Yeah dude, Antonio Sanchez is lowkey af technically a monster.
My pick goes to harland. This p much says it all
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FBrdpn50qw0
friendly reminder that this record displays the greatest emo/screamo/hardcore drumming of all time
Guess I'll go for Michael Giles, his drumming on ITCOTCK is flawless
Bradley Hale of Now, Now.
His sense of flair and general rhythm composition is incredible. Subtle and refined.
Plus 'Threads' has some of my absolute favourite drum production ever which helps the enjoyment of his drumming.
>>61177874
JC was fucking great, if Oceania had JC and mixed billys shitty vocals a bit deeper it would have been a great album.
Mick Avory (The Kinks) - He's just got a really subtle style, and his drumming has a great feel. Solid drummer.
Bill Berry (R.E.M.) - You can name any early R.E.M. song just by the drums. Enough said. He wrote some great songs too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXHc3GK2mrM
Hey Richurd, it's your daaddd
>>61185453
nice. dude has skill. nothing exceptional though.
>>61177874
Jaki Liebezeit
Brian Chippendale
Tony Williams
Tom Jenkinson
Rashied Ali
Peter Erskine
>>61185485
Besides from being on the most influential band in heavy metal and beginning of death metal, he wrote everything in that song. Guy is a beast when it comes to making music and is fucking hilarious
Han Bennink.
this mad cunt
>>61185792
yeah. i was waiting for someone to post him. best technical drummer in history, imo. dude has a memory that cant be topped.
>>61185822
all 3 rush members are among the best players of their respective instruments
>>61185621
dude I love richard but come the fuck on
>>61185878
hmm... i dunno about alex lifeson being at the top of his trade.
he's good, ok, that's obvious. but great? i dunno if i would call him great. where has he ever shown exceptional skill?
>>61177874
Frank Donaldson
Simon Goubert
>>61185822
Are you actually kidding? What has he done that's put him technically ahead of pretty much any other PROFESSIONAL drummer ever?
>>61186001
He's perfect. he never forgets a single beat. and he always repeats what he played before. guy its a machine.
>>61185878
among the best? are you sure?
>>61186023
that's expected from a decent drummer
>>61177874
It's between Deantoni Parks and Bill Bruford for me as far as rock drummers go. Obviously Bruford is objectively better, but I do really love Parks' style.
>>61186094
Expected, maybe. Delivered? Not as much as we want.
I'm just gonna post a few fun drum vids off the top of my head cause playing favourites is for children.

ok so, that guy isnt even playing on what is recorded. the audio. so... you have anything else?
Gavin Harrison
Dave Matthews Band sucks balls, but Carter Beauford is an amazingly precise, creative and non repetitive drummer.
>>61186379
What are you on about?
Terry Bozzio
>>61178234
>second post is bonzo
Proud of u anon
>>61186527
im saying, if you look at his drumming, when it hits the snares, its not even in time with the audio. and also hes not even hitting the weird mexican shit that sound like chimes. capiche?
>>61186603
Are you on drugs, mate? You're making little to no sense.
>>61186662
Fuck off. We dont need any more brits on this god damn website. Take a walk motherfucker.
I never cared much for any drummers in particular, I don't know much about the craft. But as a band leader, pic related is my certainly my fav
>>61178414
shame such a nice drummer will always be mainly associated with the Police.
>>61180259
I don't think anyone has anything against Sanchez, except maybe the Birdman soundtrack I found that really annoying
>>61186687
Assuming you're talking about the first video, it's in time with the audio unless you're having syncing issues on your end. It's a live recording.
The thing to his left isn't a snare, if that's what's throwing you off. It's a pandero. It's difficult to distinguish in the mix with the shitty bitrate, but it's there. Furthermore, the "weird mexican shit that sounds like chimes" is a cowbell, which he's hitting fucking constantly.
Lastly, I'm not british.
Brian Chippendale
>>61177874
Kenny Aronoff & Phil Collins.
>>61178414
Stewart Copeland or Bill Bruford it is.
Charles Hayward, Panda Bear, Mitch Mitchell
>>61188223
god, are you serious? mitch mitchell?
that guy was OK, but surrounded by geniuses. by himself his drumming was fucking crap. get real.
>>61188277
lol alright friend
The Hammer
>>61179279
Jonny volta was best volta
The drummer most influential to my style is definitely Abe Cunningham, obviously not the best in a technical way but he's so groovy and his parts are fun as hell to play.
>>61179304
he really isn't that good
One of my current favorites is Billy Rymer, the current drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan. Pic related has god tier drumming
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lihaS9b1DXQ
>>61190307
yup. bedlam was really good but those first three albums with jon were really special
>>61182259
I think it's between him and Chris Dave.
>>61180635
lightning bolt guy
>>61177874
travis barker
>>61186735
good shit anon
as far as antonio's rep goes i think i got birdman mixed up with whiplash again
saw both movies around the same time and whiplash gets a lot of hate from /mu/
I've listened to Moanin and Free For All. Really liked the latter. Where should I go next?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKyjuAuwr5E
He's not the best of all time but does anyone else agree that Slipknot's new drummer is kickass?
>>61190961
is there a better drumming moment in volta history than the robot talk part in the middle of take the veil?
i think not
although I'm curious if anyone thinks so
>>61186348
Isn't Gil Sharone the drummer for Marilyn Manson right now? or was that for his last album?
Topper Headon
also love jamaican drummers like Sly Dunbar and Style Scott
Another vote for Neil

Not necessarily the GOAT but definitely my favorite
Definitely my main man Billy B. The way he creates space and then fills it with interesting and exciting percussion over top of it all just resonates with me. Like right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGprBR4Uc88
He just plays exactly what you wouldn't expect him to play but it ends up sounding so perfect in the end result. God I love Bill Bruford.
i like zach hill from death grips, maybe some of you have heard of him
>>61193255
literally who

Bruford, Gavin Harrison or Morgan Agren for sure.
