>The Body Lovers - Number One of Three
Seems like somewhat of a logical conclusion to Soundtracks for the Blind, which isn't very surprising considering it's one of Gira's post-Swans breakup projects with ex-Swans members all over the place. Although that album was very diverse, its general sound is in many ways similar to this album. The album throws 73 minutes of droning, ominous instrumentals at the listener, constantly changing in terms of instrumentation but pretty vonsistent in terms of mood. Only around the 8th track does the album temporarily let up in its brooding atmosphere, sounding not unlike A Piece of the Sky's climax. Indeed, it feels very much like one could place it inbetween Soundtracks and The Seer in the Swans discog and it would make perfect sense. Sadly, the album doesn't approach either album's amount of substance and diversity, but it is certainly a more memorable journey than My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky. Give this a try if you care for Swans' post-rock material. 7.5/10

>Magma - Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh
Already being familiar with zeuhl through Koenjihyakkei, this album is hardly a shocker for me, and not everything works for me too well (brass on the first track sounds kinda weak, a lot of tracks kinda pass me by without capturing my attention), but there are plenty of things to enjoy here. The way the tracks flow into each other is cool, and when a climax is reached at last it sounds really intense (especially the hysterical vocals on Nebëhr Gudatt). Good stuff. 7/10

>Feminist Improvising Group - Live in Hamburg (NDR Funkhaus Studio 10)
Piano, string instruments and brass (including bassoon!) topple over each other, often accompanied by yelping and shrieking female vox. It's an odd and oddly captivating piece of free improv, showing signs of jazz and classical but not toppling over to either side, instead going for its own unique approach. I liked it a lot, will be returning to this. 7.5/10

wow a lot of these p4k/aerosal cantano-core 2015 releases aren't doing anything for me

Arca - Mutant (2015)
>IDM

Somehow its like a less-focused and more spastic version of Garden of Delete, and that's saying something. The more I listen to very maximalistic music such as this the more I realize how much I value minimalism and sparseness in my music (which is pretty fitting considering my top 3 consists of records performed entirely by 1 person save for like a minute of Bad Timing) and I just often find maximalist works are trying way too hard to project their sound as being more complex or interesting than it actually is. But there are a few good ideas here, I like the parts where Arca focuses down on a single idea, like the more glitch hoppy bits. But overall a convoluted mess of a record that puts off the image that it thinks its more than it actually is.

2.0-

Algiers - Algiers (2015)
>post-punk

This is fucking hilarious, honestly. Never have I seen an influence shoehorned into an album more than the gospel influence is shoehorned into this album. And the post-punk backing to this gospel singing is rather not-extraordinary as well, especially when more synths come in. I can admire the attempts at melding gospel/soul singing with post-punk, but honestly its just not a good mix. And its been done before with a few TV on the Radio tracks but whatever.

>Alexander Tucker - Furrowed Brow
A meh to the maximum, just pretty ok rambling, meandering freak folk/psych folk affair. On the psych folk side of things, it severly lacked the grandeur that makes the genre shine. On the freak folk side of things, it lacked the whole "actually being freaky" thing that makes the genre so interesting.

Mostly just okay. 6.1/10

>Tihang Gultam Group - Batak Music
The thing that really stands out about this album is its exceptionally poor recording quality. The instruments and musical style found in this area is normally tremendously bright and full of life, but the recording encountered here ripped the wonderful tone color out of every instrument. This mostly just left me with a mushy pile of kazoos and kindergarden toy xylophones.

I wasn't a huge fan of the music itself, either. This is a relatively consistent problem with ethnic folk albums: they are monotnous. Unfortunately, the other aspects of this recording weren't enough to help me look past this monotony.

4/10.

Goodfriend advances!

James Ferraro - Skid Row (2015)
>alternative R&B, electronic

If Ferraro could quit with this alt R&B stuff I'd be so okay with that. For the first time in my life, I'm gonna parrot Mr. Melon and say that this album "...comes together so sloppily, in an overpowering way.". To be fair I'm not all to well acquanted with Ferraro and his style, despite Live at Primavera Sound being one of my personal favorites, so this might just be me not liking his more standard style, because I know none of his other releases are like LaPS. I do have to say that the sound collage aspects of this are really cool, and gives the album a cool conceptual theme regarding the '92 LA riots, like that sample of the entire Rodney King "can't we all just get along?" speech is pretty innovative and cool. But other than that, very sloppy and fever-dream-ish.

>because I know none of his other releases are like LaPS
fair enough. his discog is very rewarding regardless, so get around to it when you can.
god of london and watch the throne eps were made around the same time. they focus more on droney piano oriented stuff, but i find myself getting strangely similar vibes from them.
not very similar, but it's the best i've got. LaPS really is top tier ferraro though.

>Brainbombs - Obey
They Play one riff each song, over and over, with mild variation on other instruments (like a [badly played] trumpet) whilst the singer mumbles about rape and shit like that.
I dunno, it's REALLY tasteless and super edgy, but it's also kinda funny when he says shit like
"there's lipstick on your dick... You sick fuck" or "die, you fuck" for the 20th time.
It's boring, overwrought and really edgy.
4/10

>Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate
I actually bought this album before having listened to it, with the knowledge that it is one of the most critically lauded albums of all time. I certainly see the appeal of it, it's a collection of very well written folk songs... from a musical and lyrical standpoint, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this album.
However, judging from this album on it's own, Leonard Cohen cannot sing. This is less noticeable in the song Avalanche, which is a very strong, almost perfect opener, but Cohen does not play to his strengths here; not every song is Avalanche...
It's a shame, because I really wanted to like this, but his singing drags the whole thing down.
I also have somewhat of a gripe with the Joan of Arc references throughout... it seems unsubtle, which is out of place for the rest of the lyrics

>Sufjan Stevens - Hark!: Songs for Christmas - Vol. II

Ok, this feels more like Suffy than the first EP.
Even the shortest songs (warning: SONGS, not fillers) like "Put the Lights on the Tree" (my personal favorite) are full of nice baroque arrangements, comfortable sounds are pleasant crescendos.
Actually, sometimes it may sound too baroque, too overproduced. This didn't bothered me too much, but I don't think this is the best choice for an EP like this; yes, I love Sufjan's songwriting, arrangements and all that jazz, but I think that he should've go by a more simple approach, because it fits the "Christmas" theme better.
And don't tell me that it will be bad because we all know that Sufjan can write amazing but simple songs, just look at his Easy Listening version of Chicago.
It's a nice little EP, nothing really special, but it's soothing enough.

7/10

Also I'm lowering the score of "Noel" to a 6.5/10

Here it is, a chart of my own that shows off the best of what I listened to this year. Of some 750-800 albums, this is what it narrowed down to. There were also albums that I very much liked that aren't on here, but that's because they were from artists that I already included on the chart.

I liked EVERY track on all of these albums, which gives them an "X" in my documents. For reference, Heldon and Pekka Pohjola got four Xs. Focus got three, while Goblin, Ekseption, Shakti, Arti & Mestieri, and Herbie Hancock got two. Djam Karet was a last minute addition because I found their music by sheer dumb luck and it turned out to be phenomenal. I hope that I can turn someone onto these and help them discover something great.

I feel like the biggest criticism of Mutant is that it's unstructured. Wille that may be an accurate word to use when describing this album, I think the lack of structure helps convey the helpless and tortured emotions it expresses. It brings up the same feelings for me that Confield does, but sounds are seem centered around human beings rather than machines.

>>61196462
>How does that ruin his music for you tho?
It just feels like he's doing a poor impression of a rapper. I get that it's supposed to be goofy, but it just feels like it's half assed. It made me not like MTI that much because it's a central part of the music. Didn't really contribute to my opinion of Third Side because there isn't much of it (and I actually thought is was pretty funny/enjoyable).

>Woob - 1194
There was a section of this album that was quite nice, a sort of progressive electronic throwback. If there was anything other than a 70 minute Dead Can Dance-wannabe snorefest surrounding it, I may have rated this higher.

4.5

>Avashi Cohen Trio - Gently Disturbed
I really have not been fond of post-heyday jazz. Nowadays, the whole genre is dredged in idol worship and what can best be described as anti-innovation. Most jazz from recent years comes off, to me, as stale and uninspired.

This album suffers somewhat from that, with a production style adventerous Luigi without a vacuum, but hot heck these jams were spicy. Great, great compositions, super interesting rhythms and wonderful playing. It reminded me of a toned-down Hiromi's Sonicbloom (which is something because that group jams like a pre-schooler's lunchtime sandwich.)

Really enjoyed this. Still seething with all the tired styles of current jazz trends, but here at least quality music shines through.

7.5

My Bloody Valentine - m b v (2013)

Admittedly this was not my first time listening to this album, I originally added it to the chart a few months ago and had listened to it then. My logic was that by listening to it multiple times before it was time to give it a score, my ultimate score would be more accurate to how I feel about the album. I still hold to this idea, although listening to m b v now, I feel just as impressed as the first time I listened to it. If you enjoyed Loveless and for some reason have not checked this out, you should seriously do yourself a favor and give m b v a shot. Obviously it isn't quite as spectacular as Loveless, but this record was still great. In some ways, My Bloody Valentine took some of the ideas from Loveless and pushed them further, like the surreal, dream-like portions on tracks such as To Here Knows When which are elaborated on best in the tracks Is This And Yes, and She Found Now. Towards the end we actually get some fast-paced, drum-centered tracks which take beats like those on Soon to another level. All in all you should definitely check it out if you enjoy Loveless. 8/10

Starting a new chart because I have the attention span of a goldfish. It's has to be embarrassing by now.

>Tomboy
Hit or miss in the melody department. The misses only comes off as boring, while the hits are pretty effective. Plus the dense reverb-heavy production works very well.

>Subnarcotic
The instrumentation and production is good, but the delivery is incredibly dry and flat. Lacked the emotional delivery that Pain It Dark had.

>The Redeemer
The melodies and chord progressions on this needs development. There are great ideas here, but none of them feel fleshed out or explored enough to warrant this higher than a 6. I will say that the production is fantastic, chilling even. It's unlike anything I've ever heard before.

>Paralytic Stalks
This was Neo-pysch's fever dream and I loved it. Every idea on this album was effective and alot of fun to experience. On the other side I can't help but feel as if a "see what sticks" mentality was applied to this record. The pacing and overall progression of this album could have used some polishing.

Stalks > Sunlandic > Cherry > Fauna

>Forever Dolphin Love
Great pacing and overall songwriting throughout. This album's unique production, vocals, and instrumentation sets it apart from it's indie folk/psych contemporaries. A second listen is definitely needed.

>Lil Ugly Mane - Oblivion Access

Probably his most intense release by far.
If you know Lil Ugly Mane, then you should know his taste for Memphis Hip Hop and Choppend And Screwed, but if you are a person who has never heard of him, and you think he is one of this glamorous trap rapper because he has "Lil" in the name, prepare yourself to be shocked. Well, he also has "Ugly" in his name, but I was just trying to say something funny, so fuck it.
Not only this record is extremely inspired by Chopped And Screwed music, but it takes it to new extremes: nothing sounds clean, everything is covered in sludge, it's lurid, it's reverberated a lot, it's muddy as hell.
There is a lot of variety here, from (relatively) more standard-sounding tracks like "Slugs" (my favorite song), to explosions of noise to more abstract compositions like "Columns". Even with this huge amount of diversity, the rhythm is generally really slow and soul crushing, and even the more (relatively) upbeat songs don't make you hype, because they sound very, very angry.
It's hard to talk about this music, but you need to know that is not an emotionally easy listen; in fact, is probably the most depressing rap record I've ever heard.
These negative emotions are totally represented in the lyrics; they depict a pointless world, and the pointless life of Lil Ugly Mane.
Nothing is good, nothing feels good, there is no meaning behind anything, not even behind his lyrics. It's a nihilist, misanthropic vision of the world by a nihilist, misanthrope, auto-destructive person.
It ends with the amazing "Intent and Purulent Discharge", that closes this terrifying piece of music with a desperate crescendo, and then, the void.

9/10

Lil Ugly Day>Lil Ugly Mane - Dey Bout 2 Find Yo Body

It's incredible how a 5 minute single comprehending 3 songs manages to be so unsettling and disturbing.
This is because of the combination of the extremely lo-fi production and the absurdly surreal synths used. It sounds like gangsta rap filtered through the head of a psychopath.
Lyrically, this songs takes an extreme take on horrorcore, with Lil Ugly Mane rapping about his violent actions and his satanic attitude.

It's a pretty good single, very strange, very strong and somehow very atmospheric. Not your standard club music or music to drive in the hood to, it's more like music to watch snuff films to.

7.5/10

>Lil Ugly Mane - U Aint From My Hood

Three versions of the same song.
The first sounds more like a banger: the production is cleaner, but with always a lot of cheap or lo-fi sounds, like the drum machine (that I love) or the buzzing and cheesy synthesized bass.
It's a fun track that despite being more straight forward than a lot of other Lil Ugly Mane stuff it still has that outsider sound that has become a signature of him.

The second remix is a lot slower, nearer to Chopped and Screwed than club music.
I really like the haunting piano and the extensive use of effect, it really gives an ethereal, druggy vibe. I can imagine some gang members in the south drinking lean and tripping to this and it actually doesn't seem strange.
The third track is just a Chopped and Screwed version of this one.
These couple of tracks really have a nice atmosphere and they put you in a very particular mood.

Good single, recommended if you are interested in twisted Memphis stuff.

>Lil Ugly Mane - Bust A Sag

Ok, I'm pretty sure Bust A Sag is a parody.
The beat may seem a normal at first listen, but is actually extremely, EXTREMELY loud and obnoxious. Very, very, VERY loud and obnoxious.
And Lil Ugly Mane raps about wearing baggy pants. That's it.
I can only see this as a satire on trap music and attitude, and goddamn if it isn't hilarious as hell.

Cakey Cakey is a more normal banger with a more conventional beat. Nothing too crazy, but I really like the pitched down vocals of LUM on this.

The remix of Bust A Sag isn't anything special. Yes, it is well produced and I like the drums, but it seems like it doesn't go anywhere for 5 minutes.

Listen to this just for the original Bust A Sag, if you want to be ignorant and happy, or Cakey Cakey if you want Lil Ugly Mane over pretty much standard trap.

>Jan Jelinek - Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records
This is very minimal, bordering on microsound at some part although more melodic. All these short clicks and crakles convey such a warm and calm atmosphere. You can feel how it was meticulously crafted but this doesn't mean that it's mechanical cold music. The tracks which approach more ambient music are the highlights.

>Folkdove - Folkdove
Fairly standard English folk music apart that it's a band from Brittany. Sadly, the medieval elements are rare and are often used in short interludes although I understand it's difficult to sing with this type of instrumentation. Other than that, the music is pretty simple and leave more room to the voices, as usual in the genre. In short : nothing new but definitely pleasant.

/mu/ is back up, nice

>Opeth - Blackwater Park
One of the memetal essentials from the /mu/core chart I haven't heard yet. It's alright, seems like your average death metal album to me. It's a good introduction to the genre if you wanna get into it though.

What next? Or should I return to the 2015 chart?

JME - Integrity> (2015)
>grime

I think I might be developing a thing for grime. The beats on this thing are fucking /massive/, and the MCing is solid as well. JME is a little bit hokey, specifically in the voice (I hate British rappers and I don't know why) and lyrics (those video game references, ugh), but his flow is definitely servicable and fits the beats well. A little bit overlong as well, but those beats are well worth the price of admission and more.

Jay Rock- 90059
Being not taken away by guest verses I've heard from him, I was surprised to how much I liked 90059. Jay Rock never struck me as someone to use melody (more of a rapper's rapper type) but he does and it works well. He's also someone who can hold his own, and I wouldn't really have minded if there were no guests on the album.
Merzbow- Konchuuki
Not his best work, but the electronic aspects used here are an interesting break from his usual assault
Mindless Self Indulgence- PINK
This anthology was an interesting insight into Jimmy Urine's influences that he morphed into what would make MSI Hot Topic-bait in the mid-aughts

Enjoyment is an attempt on a subjective scale.
I feel like lowering the range.

If applicable I add more scales
Personal relevance means how much relevance/significance the album might have in history regarding albums I enjoy.
I have another one, which measures the relevance on my listening habits (more appropriate for long-time rating).

I return with a ton of shit rated

Black Sabbath- Paranoid
equal quality to s/t and Master of Reality, but way better than I remembered
4/5

Neu!-Neu!
This is pretty fantastic. I especially like the contrast between the hypnotic rock tracks and the ambient soundscape tracks. The transition between Sonderangebot and Weissensee is one of the best things I've ever heard. Almost a 5/5 but I have to take one star off because of how awful the dying old man vocals on Lieber Honig are.
4/5

Pink Floyd- Piper at the Gates
Psych rock perfection.
5/5

Wire- Pink Flag
The stylistic origin of dance punk. More relaxed than punk, but with the same level of energy. Love the singer's accent as well
4/5

The Doors- The Doors
Psych and blues are well mixed here, really good for driving to
4/5

The Smiths- The Queen is Dead
This has some of my favorite pop songs of all time on it, fun jangle pop
