I just remembered I have some of those for ukulele, I'll try them.
>>61171470
I have those super thin white dunlop picks, and they do get pretty close when picking deeply, but can't keep up the tone with fast play.
>>61171497
I'll have to get some, looks promising.
>>
My guitar came with 9s for strings. They play perfectly the way the 'tar is setup, but they're a little thin and tinny sounding. Will 10s require me to set up the neck/bridge? Are 10s considered pretty standard, or should I be looking at 11s or higher?
>>
>>61171689
i just finished learning E shape bar chords and playing a whole lot of nothing except for the things i'm practicing and now i'm learning A bar chords. what are some good songs for an early intermediate level guitar player to practice swapping b/t E bars and A bars on?

Check these out. They're Golden Gate Mandolin picks, pretty soft. Generally speaking the thicker and rounder a pick, the softer attack it will have.

Dunlop 204s are nice too.

10s are pretty standard, you will have to set everything up, but it's not something too difficult. You can gradually solve problems as you encounter them. If you like a radius to your strings it's a bit harder. I would recommend you do it, every guitarist should know how to set up their guitar.

This is kind of an RnB blues thing. When I saw this (It's from the documentary "Red, White, and Blues") I was pretty impressed. Very cool performance.

Is that a floating bridge on a flat top guitar?
>>
>>61171851
Thin picks and picks with sharp edges have a harsher attack. With rounded edges the strings sort of glide off the pick making it sound "softer", this depends on the material but all of the warm sounding picks I have are similar in that they're all thick and have have smooth edges.

>>61171901
Nah, it's a bonafide archtop, just with a round hole instead of f holes.

>>
>>61171929
I think that the ultimate soft attack is thick + flexible. Obviously there is some contradiction there, that's probably what led to the confusion. If a pick is thick and sharp, it'll have a sharper attack than a thin and sharp pick. But most thick picks are less sharp.
>>
>>61171935
Not sure what the problem is, they look kinda crooked but that could just be the camera angle. The saddles being reversed is fine if that's what you're talking about.

I have this bass that I love and hate at the same time. It looks and feels great and I love it. On the other hand it sounds like ass. I'm looking to drop $80-$120 on a guitar for my dad. He got pretty screwed over by his divorce, and he's headed to Texas. I'd like to get him something so he doesn't drive off a cliff or something stupid along the way. He's left handed and prefers acoustic. What would ya'all recommend? He used to be pretty decent, but that years ago and he hasn't touch a guitar since. A solid beginner tier guitar would work just fine.
>>
>>61175072
for electrics either try a strat or les paul, pretty obvious but theyre the most versatile. an SG could also work

for acoustics avoid martins like a plague they only work for bluegrass. get a taylor.

as for an amp fender make pretty good amps.

>>
>>61175148
I'm more drawn to acoustics I think which is strange since I usually listen to electric based stuff. The guitar I have now is a Mitchell MD 100S. Any opinion on that?

How do I get knowledge about specific models and shit?

>>61175169
jesus man. That's some pretty big cash. Do they only sell it in japan? I'd consider another color for punk rock but it's a very nice guitar.

>>61175183
So if I can feel the vibration? also Noob question, but do "better" guitars have nicer action? I noticed some barre chord heavy songs make my hands tired after a while on my mitchell. Is it the guitar or do I just suck that bad?
>>
>>61175183
Well, I talked to my sister and she agreed to pitch in. What would be a good guitar for a about $160 to $250?
>>
>>61175289
>do "better" guitars have nicer action?
it matters how bad the action is. if its bowed as fuck i wouldnt buy it but if its just a little high thats just a bad setup and can be easily fixed

also knowledge about specific models isnt all that important. go to your nearest guitar store and play their guitars. buy what feels nice to you

>>61175325
thats certainly a better price range. ibanez and fender make some pretty good low end acoustics. dont get an epiphone though because they break easilly

also pardon my spelling its 4:10 AM and im up shitposting on /gg/ for some reason

>>61173341
That's good for learning for one month.

>>61173777
I've seen people fill in gaps and cracks in wood by making a mix of woodglue and sawdust. If the gouges are deep, you could try that. If not, the paint can fill it no problem.
>>
>>61175380
>>61175380
looks fine to me
>>
>>61175289
I've never heard of Mitchell guitars, so I can't say anything about them. I've only started learning guitar for about 3 months, though.

I think you should go to a guitar store and try out a few guitars to see how different guitars and brands feel and sound. The only guitar I've ever played was a cheap guitar my dad bought in the 90's. The whole thing was setup badly and it had more than double the normal amount of action. After I set it up right, I thought that's what a decent guitar was supposed to feel like, until I went to a Guitar Center and played a few guitars. I fell in love with the Taylors, so I ended up going on Craigslist and buying a 110.
I'm mostly learning folk music right now, and I think Taylors sounds great for it. So I ditto the recommendation of the Anon above you.
You might end up liking some other brands, who knows. Just try a few guitars and see which ones you like.
>>
>>61175390
thanks! I know the technical part isn't quite there yet but the goal is to make my brain put together the two hands and the singing. Its really not that easy.
>>
>>61175620
Definitely not easy. I was surprised with how difficult it was for me to play and sing. I totally under estimated that.

I've been playing for 3 months and I finally sound as decent doing both as I can doing them separately.
>>
>>61175289
Oh I'm not the punk anon. I don't plan to get one in that color yet, but I'll eventually get one, most likely a Fender. The one I'm going to buy in Japan if all goes well is a V or Explorer style guitar, not sure if I'll get one with a Floyd or a TOM yet though. It'll most likely be a TOM due to availability. It will be either white, black or oiled in black, red or blue. I don't discard the possibility of getting a Korina lookalike either, one of the few good looking natural finish guitar types. This is all assuming I get a proper job in January.

>>
Thoughts on the Yamaha Revstars?
>>
Is pressing down on the strings supposed to be really hard?
My strings keep buzzing because I don't think I press down on them hard enough and it's frustrating when no chord or note sounds right because of it.

Will this just fix itself once I get calluses on my fingers, or should I try to fix my technique? I don't touch the other strings with my fingers, so it's not that either. The guitar should also be set up properly as far as I know.

Am I just shit?
>>
>>61175992
have you tried pressing more lightly too? You could be pressing too hard, you want to apply enough pressure to get the notes to ring properly but not more.
>>
>>61175992
You need some decent pressure, but you shouldn't be trying to crush the strings.
Try scooting your fingers closer to the frets, and mess around with what part of the fingertip you use.
>>
>>61176008
Pressing more lightly just makes it either buzz or the note fades out instantly.

>>61176066
Placing the fingers closer to the frets helps, but when playing some chords where I'm trying to fit all fingers on the same one automatically puts one or two fingers further back which then amplifies the problem.

Yeah, there will be chords where that happens.
Once you finger gets a tougher, it'll get easier.

>>61176089
Just keep messing around with it until you find what works. It won't take more than two or three weeks before you can play open chords fairly well.

No matter how much I try I still get huge stage fright.
Last week I had to perform in front of 1000 students parents and teachers at my former school and I completely forgot my part and improvised for 3 minutes in scale.
I can play my part with my eyes closed for hours without making a mistake and the moment I'm on stage I forget everything.
Will the nervousness and stage fright ever stop?

While I've definitely had those moments sitting down and trying to transcribe a Pat Martino solo, I feel like you're kind of missing the point of jazz guitar, or even music in general. It's not a competition to become "one of the greats", the best thing is to try to learn and apply something new at your own pace and improve yourself.

If the guy with the eb-0 is still here, can you see what harmonic the neck pickup is under on the g string for me? I'm gonna need that for a project, and I'm also curious to see how it compares to my long scale eb-3. The easiest way to check the harmonic is to use a slide or a substitute for a slide and a tuner. Mute the string between the neck and the slide. Thanks amigo.

There also isn't any specific information on this ad, so I've got no idea what to read about.

So I'm considering getting my first bass. I have the opportunity to buy 2 used ones for almost the same price (100 for squier and 120 € for 5 string). Should I get a Squier Affinity P-bass or a Stagg 5-string (probably a BC-300) ?

How do I find a bass player?
I asked on the local FB musicians page... no dice other than "I can play if you have a rig, sometimes, maybe."
I tried CL, FB... I don't tweet much, is twitter a good resource to find musicians? Where else should I try?

I'm really excited to have a drummer on the same wave length as me (family, job, practice once a week, we aren't 16 year olds so the practices are much more productive in a shorter amount of time).

Finding a singer around here in this "HEAVY METAL/BLACK METAL/SCREAMO" only local scene is going to be hell.

>I'm decent at fixing up guitars so depending on the issues you had it might still be a good purchase for me.
If it's really chinese made, it's probably going to have issues like unseasoned wood, or cheap hardware which in the case of a guitar with a trem, might make the whole thing unplayable unless you get rid of the trem.
Always try before you buy a guitar anyway.
>>

Not that model, but I had one of their LP copies in the past and have played their P-bass copy.
Electronics were always the big issue for me. The LP was made pretty solidly though.

>>61179853
you're driving yourself to depression, don't feel like you have to 'man up' but ask yourself: 'am I a good person?' 'Do I deserve good things?' 'Are my needs being met? 'Do I deserve sex?' 'Do I deserve autonomy?'. If you care about your wife enough then you need to talk her about it, I'm sure she still cares about you, she probably has her own issues that you can't talk about because of the emotional distance. It won't be easy, and the solution might end up being a break up but you deserve to live happy, you're young, you have a fantastic job and you clearly consider yourself attractive; you've also shown your capacity to care about others deeply as you love your kid and despite your megrims with her, you do completely selfless things in her favour. Come on dude
>>
>>61180294
Cool, I can deal with that. About the frets, were any coming up? Was the neck thick enough and was the bridge in the right place? I guess a lot of this you wouldn't remember but thanks for the info so far. Luckily it's an unbound neck so fixing the frets is a lot easier.

Imo the shorter sustain is super useful for effects. It's a good idea as long as it's a full hollow body or maybe a resonator. Probably okay to cheap out if its for shoegaze. On the other hand it's not a trebly tone in general, so you wouldn't want it to be your only guitar for shoegaze.

It's not really an issue when recording, I'm talking more in loud live situations. Noise gates could work but I find that they kill dynamics, there's really no advantage to using an Archtop if you're just going to bury it under a ton of fuzz and reverb imo.

A semi-hollow will get you that same controllable feedback without the need for a noise gate or anything else.
>>
>>61181682
It's really hard to say, in general they will have worse frets. It pains me to say, stay away from older models. Same with hadean, there's some growing pains. Don't buy unless you're in the U.S. and can return the guitar if need be.

Casinos are fully hollow but the thin body keeps them from having ridiculous out of control feedback.

Semi-hollows will still feedback more than a solid-body would, but it's nothing that can't be controlled. A thinline hollowbody is definitely the way to go if you want even more feedback.

I've read that many models from late 50s to early 60s had neck with cap, neck, bridge. That's what its been sounding like to me, but I couldn't figure it out and I'm lacking an amp atm so I can't do the tap test.

Still, if that's the case, what exactly does "neck with capacitor" mean?

A guitar is a big purchase. There are way more questions for you to consider before you ask "whats the word?"
What's your style of music?
What looks best to you?
What feels best to you?
Go try everything you can in store and then do your research.

what should you listen for?

i literally like... its really embarrassing. ive had bands, me and my friend just started a band and practice and stuff, and he understands that i'm retarded, but i'm so dumb when it comes to equipment and theory and pretty much everything.

only thing i can do is play guitar okay (and a little piano) and read music a bit. but all the other stuff i have no idea.

Then, I would say, avoid buying a new electric and amp for now, get an acoustic if you don't already have one, and practice daily for a few years.
You sound lazy and uninspired. What I find when people like you skip to buying fancy new equipment, is that you end up getting obsessed with the tech, so much so that you have 0 understanding of the basics and you end up with a disgusting sound.

Just my two cents.

I've got a Traynor YCS 50 and I threw a Line 6 dl4 in the loop, but when i turn up the send and return controls so i can hear the pedal I get an almost boost like effect. It beings my clean tone into almost overdrive territory, anyone have any idea why?
