I read an early interview that David Lee Roth gave during the 78 tour. His tone and demeanor are quite different from interviews with VH three years later. He's pretty quiet, articulate, and gives straight answers to questions since after all, this is when they were just starting out and weren't quite confident or sure of themselves. If you see interviews from, like, 1981, they were a lot different and more pompous because by that time they knew they'd made it.

Dave among other things talks about how disco was dominating at the time and rock had kind of fallen by the wayside and he was worried about it and "Van Halen makes rock-and-roll that you can dance to." This last point is important because rock at that time had devolved into pretentious prog noodling and lost touch with the simple 4/4 single format. In retrospect it's kind of funny how Dave seems so worried about disco since it was just a passing fad that would soon be on the way out.

I guess if you look at the rock scene at that time, there wasn't a lot of easily accessible buttrock (I assume that's what he's talking about).

Punk rock thread?
>>
>>61169974
Guess not. The rockfags threw a bitchfit about disco back then, but it was the fault of rock for forgetting how to make good 4/4 singles. You couldn't exactly dance to Styx or Genesis, so disco just came along to fill that void,

Thanks in large part to Van Halen, stadium rock was reborn and their S/T was soon followed by Highway To Hell and Judas Priest getting big once they found out how to make more commercial songs.

You notice the difference between the American and British rock scenes in the late Seventies. Both had been ruined if you will by prog, but in our case the kids were upset that rock had lost touch with what they were feeling and ceased being "punk" enough. In the American case, it seems more that rock had stopped being fun or party-oriented.

VH II felt more like the B-side of the first album. At least, it lacked any songs as iconic as Running With The Devil.

Light Up The Sky is a sick tune, except it languished in obscurity because of not being released as a single and also they never played it live after the 79 tour.

t. Brits turned rock-and-roll, which was supposed to be party music that kids danced and fucked to into socialist whining

Yeh VH S/T, Highway, and British Steel were the trio of albums that opened the 80s musically.

After the first two albums, Dave and Eddie had increasing creative conflicts because the latter wanted to make pretentious art music.

>Eddie had increasing creative conflicts because the latter wanted to make pretentious art music

Wut. Listen to all of the Hagar albums when they became boring generic radio rock. Eddie had total control over the songwriting process at that time, so the top 40 shit they put out back then is what actually represented his vision for the band.

EVH is best buds with Tony Iommi. There was an interview the two gave a few years ago and I will highlight this bit:

Iommi: When you've been in the business as long as we have, you learn to deal with all the bullshit. For example, any time you want to play something off your new CD, the audience gets up and walks out of the room.
Eddie: Or you try and do something different and they complain. Like when we put out the third Van Halen album, people complained that it didn't sound like the first two. But if we made it sound like the first two, they'd just complain that we were repeating ourselves and not evolving musically.
>>
>>61170668
Yeah that repetition thing i feel is true for all music
>>
>>61170510
Eddie has always considered the band a family business so he became upset how DLR got all the interviews and magazine cover appearances.
