Hey guys, I have a $15 budget. What amp should I get that can play over a full orchestra? Budget can maybe stretch to $20 if it's really worth it.
>>
>>61165260
no
embrace it
let it consume you
let it change you at your core
it will rock the foundation that you set so many values on, and it will all come crumbling down

you will hate it
but you will need it

It's something I have yet to learn anon (I picked guitar one month ago, although I've been a bassist for years), but it's very bass-heavy. Throw a walking bass bassline there and getting closer will be much easier. Think of the classic "Tom and Jerry bass"

I can't, I bought it used from a private seller. Besides, I greatly enjoy it :^)
You'd probably be surprised if you saw its body, it's not the guitar you'd think it is from looking at the headstock.

To further elaborate on my "walking bass is the base of it" statement. Once you get bass right, you already have the rockabilly sound. Just slap a rock and roll guitar over it and you're done.
>>
>>61166152
proof that 6+ strings basses and bass tapping are the height of faggotry and for cucks who refuse to fill their role. That's how a real bassist gets attention, by playing actual cool noticeable basslines.

Well, EVH was the first guy to do it when they made his Kramer trying to copy the lawsuit destroyer headstock without getting in trouble with Gibson. I had one of those when I was a noob! 9 years ago, almost to the day, I got it and a rogue rg120. Gain cranked on both, mods scooped, lows and mids boosted. Seriously, you couldn't fuck with my tone. I had a plexiglass flying v with the shittiest pickups I ever had in a guitar. Fuck cutting through a mix, I cut straight through your ear drums so my shitty punk band was the last thing you'd ever hear.

Seriously though, I never owned a pedal before or afterwards that introduced so much noise when it was turned off. I don't know what was worse, I had that and and a multi effects(not a floor unit, a single pedal that had the same case but silver) from them that was God awful too. I got it for the octave effect, which sometimes turned on, but sometimes not. It would abruptly switch to a different effect and switch back of it's own free will.

I don't even really like Brian Setzers music (even though I like a lot of rockabilly) but have tons of respect for him. it's called compensation m8. They probably think spending shitloads will make the git gud. That said, I understand why some guys spend a lot on a guitar. What I don't get is the typical overloaded pedalboard.
The only pedal I have is a FF clone I made myself and biased for bass. I used to have a MOSFET booster to feed my bass to PA amp but it got stolen.
I'm looking to make a valve head for my guitar and a MXR phaser 90 clone though. Will probably get the stuff to do that for Christmas.

I really liked the CV tele I had, awesome guitar for 350

Probably as good as any <$1000 tele

but they don't make many 350 dollar guitars like that...
what if you want a LP style guitar? A 500 dollar epi isn't close to a decent gibson

You can probably find some jap ones around 800-1000 but thats a lot more...

the truss rod on my CV tele broke through the plug too..so they're definitely not built as solid as a US tele.

The klon guy didn't

Klons only got that expensive with hype from fanboi blues lawyers that browse TGP all day so they go bid up

he even had the 2nd version with some little apology on it about the stupid hype...I think he got sick of making them and stopped. There were like 500 clones of it by then.

There are some retarded pedals that are really expensive (unjustly) though
Pete Cornish had a delay pedal that was a slightly tweaked boss pedal (you even had to by the boss pedal and ship it to him) that he charged like 1000 bucks for...a crybaby wah that had some stupid bullshit done to it and he charged over 1500 for it. TGP dudes have shit like that because its 'well worth it'

I dunno...I think spending something like 4k on a really nice gretsch or something is something I'd do if I had the cash to blow.

Some stuff does seem more ridiculous than others...but different strokes, different folks...

I've never played a Klon clone that sounded exactly like the Klon. Most of you are probably just too poor to even try a real one, they really are worth the money.

For me it's less of an overdrive and more of a "harmonic exciter" if you've got top notch gear it can only make those qualities better. It's like going from 128kbps mp3 to FLAC.

Hopefully I'll have saved enough money to go to Japan and buy myself a nice guitar
>inb4 why will you do the trip when you could get an American guitar for that kind of money
1) I won't buy anything over 1k without trying it
2) If I order it by mail I have to pay 60% in taxes, as my country has a fucked up state
3) I'll get to visit Japan. A friend of mine will be coming with me as she wants to visit Japan too.
4) Since my state is fucked up, I need to overpay even if I want an American guitar. A Fender American Standard (Strat or Tele) here costs 2100-2200 USD. The cheapest Gibson available is the SG Special at 1630. There's a shop charging 2500 for that one, I don't know if one of them hasn't updated their prices or what. A ticket to Miami costs about 800 or 900 USD, and applying for a tourist visa is 150 USD. I get more bang for the buck going to Japan tbqh, and I get to have an obscure special snowflake guitar, it's a win-win situation :^).
>>
>>61168688
Do yourself a favor and go try a real Klon through a nice amp, make sure you dress nice so the shop owners don't think you're just another peasant tire kicker. It's really an unbelievable pedal which is why guys like Nels Cline use one when they could literally have any other overdrive on the planet.

The Klones aren't even made with the right parts.

I need in on this scam. I'm going to make 100 different accounts on the gear page(maybe some on gearslutz too), and post semi regularly with all of them(or have my little cousin do it in exchange for a shark card a month). Mean while I'm going to build a couple dozen different pedals, leave them out side a month, and then bring them inside. Then clean them up nicely while still allowing them to look like they've been abused. I'll remove all the dating info from all components with some kind of solvent. Then in going to ship a few out to my buddies in different corners of the country.

Then starts the final phase. I'm going to post one on reverb for $800, "Vintage Fuzz Distortion 1972-74 Handmade in USA". Then I'm going to take my most prestigious tgp account and start a thread. "Is this legit? I've never seen one this cheap before. I mean, it's even if it doesn't work it can't be too hard to fix. Thinking about pulling the trigger before someone beats me to it, I'll figure the rest out later. Anyone have a schematic?" Then every so often I'll take one of my other accounts and reply with something like. "I never saw another one of these before. I picked one up at an estate sale for $10, it became my main fuzz. I could never find anything on the internet about it." The rest will be history.

Nah, they made their name on their LPs. The djent thing just made a bigger splash since there isn't anybody else selling guitars with those features so cheap. >>
>>61169034
Props on that m8. Just be careful with certain components which require trying because of big variations in specs. Germanium transistors are an example of this. I got around that because some guy modified the Fuzz Face circuit with preset resistors instead of fixed ones, which eliminates the need to get a lot of them and test them. There might be more tricks for other stuff.

I'm not completely sold on the dyes and stains I've used on other projects. I am sold on padding on shellac, but that has taken a little practice and is crazy time consuming.

Honestly soldering is the least labor intensive part of the process. Making the PCB (designing, etching and drilling it) is much more laborious. In my case, since there are no metal boxes available here I also had to make one from sheet metal, prime it and paint it. Was fun but it's time consuming. For my next projects, I'll order stuff from the US, since we're now able to do that without paying a dime in taxes if it's under 200 bucks total. I'll probably order several boxes and stomp DPDT switches (the ones I get here are lever types, or shitty plastic ones if I want something to push).

I actually know very little about electronics, aside from what's a diode, a resistor and a transistor lol. I don't even fully understand how "diode clipping" works or what function the Zener diode has in my FF clone, so it would be kinda hard for me to spot a "boutique FF clone" if I saw the PCB or even just an obfuscated schematic. It's true that there's a lot of hype in the boutique pedal industry though. It's the same with amps but I think they deserve more respect because there are usually more things that can go wrong with an amp. I remember a guy who made a 5150 clone and was having a weird noise problem, couldn't find what was wrong, tried changing components, gave up for years and it turns out the PCB layout was the culprit.
>>
>>61150799
well for me, i just wanted one P bass, but i found the second one for cheap that i can use to make a somewhat custom one.

but in reality even if it's a simple P-Bass, there's still a lot of things that can make them all sound slightly different. one of them is a box guitar from the 90's, the other is a Indonesian Squier II so the builds are slightly different, and the electronics are too.

Alright, I want some opinions. I picked up this little...gem, from a yard sale years ago. It's easily the most fucked up guitar I've ever seen. The previous owner was a guy who played in 80s hair metal bands locally. He struggled with heroin addiction and eventually offed himself. I bought it at the garage sale from a family member. The neck feels wonderful, so I want to fix it up. I know I could buy a better guitar for the cost it'll take me, but I just feel like I should do this and I already have 2 really nice guitars. This is just for a project.

It's a kramer aerostar zx30
The pickguard is held in place by cammed out drywall screws
2 of the pots are broken
The pg was cut out with a handsaw to fit a humbucker
The bridge is missing a saddle(and the action is very high on some and low on others)
The neck pickup had some of its poles pulled out so they're higher than the fretboard.
The 5 way switch is aftermarket, larger, and in the neck position is is actually inside the hole for the old switch.

There's dings on one side of the fretboard, and some of the inlays are chipped
The frets are worn, and one is even chipped
The nut looks like it popped down and was glued back in but not seated
Only 5 of the tuners match
There looks like there used to be a string tree.

It's really rough
So far I'm thinking
Locking tuners, or maybe just plain old grovers
Tusq nut
New pups, maybe dimarzio, I'll have to listen around
New pots, Jack, and switch
Hipshot bridge
New pickguard, I'll ship the old one to pickguard heaven so they can trace it
New string tree
Maybe if I'm feeling dangerous, New fretboard from lmii, maple like this one
New frets, medium jumbo stainless
Re paint

For color scheme, I'm thinking about making it the 80s shred machine it always deserved to be.

Lime green and black
I'm thinking dimarzio for pups because they have lime green covers available
Pickguard will be 3 ply, black, green, black
Knobs and switch will be green, Jack, bridge, tuners, and string tree will be black.
Head stock will match the body
Inlays on New fretboard(if I decide to do it) will be black dots.
Going to try to repaint the kramer logo in black on the Head stock. What do you guys think? Super cheesy and a waste of money? That's what I'd expect out of most kramers anyways.

I played one of those lunch box night trains a long time ago, it reminded me of the Orange Tiny Terror. Small, no headroom, shitloads of gain.

Probably a fine little amp for around the house...not really a bedroom amp though, and not really anything you could use with a loud drummer unless you like tons of mushy gain.
>>
>>61166761
shit, just bought that.
but it sounds pretty good imo
>>
>>61170185
your ears?

Life's too short to spend a Gibson Les Paul's worth on cheap guitars

Whats in your 'why the hell did they stop making them?' list

These were fantastic sounding. Cheap too. Loud for 5 watts.

Another amp that should be reissued is the Trace Elliot Velocette. They made them in the late 90s. It was like a Fender Princeton that sounded even better. Those were awesome.

Heh, I got my studio about 5 years ago for only 550 AUD because I haggled the guy down with buying a 15watt line 6 with it

>>
>>61170361
I'd pay 100 bucks extra to never have to touch a line 6
>>
>>61170369
its a crap shoot.

sometimes you score something good, sometimes you get crap.

huge range of quality...best to do a lot of research on the brand/model.
>>
>>61170326
I was just about to pull the trigger on it when the clearance stock disappeared. Now it's gone forever. 75W for $179. '~'
