You can have an understanding and knowledge of experimental hip-hop without listening to The Money Store, or Alt-Rock without listening to OK Computer, or House without listening to Daft Punk, or No Wave/Post-punk without listening to Swans, or psychedelia/synth-pop without listening to MPP. Of course there are exceptions, especially when it comes to the albums like VU&N or Jazz in general, but honestly about half of the albums on the /mu/-core chart have counterparts and artists that represent the history and genres just as well. There is whole world of music out there not just limited to a bunch of albums that people here (sometimes arbitrarily) chose as "best."
