Heard about them yesterday, giving 98.12.28 a listen at the moment. Why are they considered so good? I mean, it's not bad and some of the songs are really good, but the lead singer's voice kinda throws me off - am I just missing what makes them go from good to godly?

Nah the fishmans thing has been around for a while, not quite as extreme as AnCo simply because AnCo is much much bigger and has a larger more well known body of work. For a relatively unknown band whose work is virtually unknown in america (including the fact that there has never been large scale reissues or remasters covered by critics they have seemed to be forgotten except for /mu/ and I'm glad because they're a one of a kind group

The first and third albums are straight reggae, the first being pretty crap and the third being great. The second album has 4 or 5 incredible songs on it but the rest are pretty awful. Long Season is phenomenal and sounds nothing like the rest of their discography. Uchū Nippon Setagaya is good. And their live album and final release, 98.12.28 Otokotachi no Wakare is a great finale for their discography and is a very satisfying listen as it contains great renditions of their objectively best songs and of Long Seasons.
They are a universally great band, I don't think anyone legit hates them unless they just want to hate it to be a contrarian faggot.

>Fishmans performed its final concert on December 28, 1998. They played many of their best songs and concluded with a full performance of Long Season. Sato left the stage immediately after a single "goodbye" with his eyes teary. This was to be Kashiwabara's final performance with the band, though Sato and Motegi planned to continue working as Fishmans. However, Sato died the following year on March 15 due to heart problems that he had suffered since birth.
