What's better: to have a deep, perfect knowledge of one chosen musical style/genre or to be open-minded and to have brief, yet vast knowledge about huge amount of musical styles. Your thoughts.
>>
In what possible situation would those things ever be mutually exclusive
>>
I think there's room for both

generally speaking general is better

If you try to do both, you inevitably will share your lifetime between those two methods of musical exploration. So, if we estimate the results you'd get by particular method, it will be inevitably worse than if you dedicate your time solely to one method. So you either perfect one method, or you get two half-assed methods, winning nowhere. Isn't it obvious.

Forgot to add, it's really a question about choosing between quantity and quality.

>general is better
but why.

I'm trying to achieve both, I listen to 7-10 new albums a day.
>>
>>61153875
because if you know a lot about music in general rather than just a very specific kind of music you likely 'understand' music more if you see what I mean

you have a more diverse understanding of the ways music can be, and from that can create a more elaborate mental picture of the way it 'works'
>>

>I listen to 7-10 new albums a day.

this seems pointless to me, first listens are often just cursory
>>
>>61154719
yeah, but what about all those obscure gems you discover while exploring deeply one style? And what about better understanding on your own experience of principles and history of development of said style, its inner organization?
>>
>>61154728
You can tell whether an album deserves a deep listen or not after your first listen.
>>
>>61154746
I don't agree, I've had opposite experience with albums many times.
>>
>>61154746
sure, I guess
sometimes music just takes a while longer to click though

This applies to many things in life.

So? What's the answer. To balance the bars of that "T" and never peak anywhere?

consider this, people.
>>

I'm okay with that
>>
>>61156576
you failed us, triperson.
>>
>>61154746
Well, not always.

For example, I thought Iceage was shit when I heard them the first time. Same with Gang of Four - Entertainment!

But I relistened to them, and they grew to be some of my favorite albums. You can learn to love.
>>
>>61156519
Agreed.
Did that for two years and now my last.fm is nothing but entry-level charts from every possible genre I could find.
Not that i regret it, I had quite the time.
But now I will focus on genres I like the most.
But I always will keep my mind open.
>>

>being this zero-sum
>implying everything exists
>>
>>61156606
That's okay :) I can always leech off the person who's has deep knowledge while I get to free roam everything :)
>>
>>61156519
That's not true.

One thing is trying to get so much breadth that you listen to 10 albums a day, without truly giving them a listen. Another thing is to try to give a lot of albums in different genres deep listens.

>>61156661
do you understand that in second sentence you're, basically, expressing agreement with that anon's post?
>>
>>61156702
Does it mean that you choose to explore one style?
>>
>>61156705
I don't think I am.

You can appreciate A LOT of things in a broad perspective on a deeper basis.
What anon here said was you could not.
>>
>>61156728
Okay, I think, what that anon's phrase actually implies is that you need to narrow your experience to get more concentrated on things, you discover, in order to have truly appreciation of said things. Isn't it what you're saying?
