Isn't it pretty obvious? He took a genre (well specifically, an element of a genre) and morphed it into more accessible and consumer friendly music. The "brostep" sound was the most accessible feature of the genre, and the music morphed away from the sub heavy, dub inspired sounds to one where the emphasis is on the mid bass sounds and aimed at American teenage metal fans. Skrillex was just the "wunderkind" of this genre and thus gets the most hype from bros.

i take it you mean classic analog sounds
they are kind of boring if you think of the most generic ones. like a simple square filtered or something doesn't get me excited, for some sounds it's really about how it's used. still you can get some pretty surprising sounds out of an analog synth if tweaked well, then again, what will make the originality is also how it'll be used.
on the other hand there is always room for funky pulse-based electro bass, think dopplereffekt, drexciya, or objekt - ganzfeld... hehe
