I can tune things by ear simply because I've played the guitar for 10 years and I know how the notes sound. I can identify notes by ear.
Longtime percussionist here, have perfect pitch but only get to use it to tune timpani lol. Percussion instruments are a great way to learn to associate pitch with music because there is no way to play them out of tune. After you play sheet music over and over again, you'll start to be able to lock on to certain notes. Start with being able to hum a middle c, then learn how to find the lower b flat and the higher f from there by hearing the chord in your head.

Why not? It's very easy to play an out of tune note on a timpani, but nobody gives a fuck if a timpani is out of tune.
