Free jazz, free improv, free noise(?)

I'm getting into this Merzbow record recently and loving it over time (Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper, as it's called), and I wanted to ask you guys what other albums you're into that eschew normal/traditional ideas of pop structure and meter in favor of more raucous stuff.

Then again I guess stuff like Eno's Music for Airports is also technically free, isn't it? Or maybe not? I don't know.

I'm expecting some Cecil Taylor, for starters.

Cecil Taylor's 'Unit Structures' is a great starting point. Another fairly obvious choice would be Albert Ayler's 'Spiritual Unity'. Enjoy, if you haven't already.

Yeah, I have that album. The first ever (and rather sudden) exposure to free jazz, I really didn't get it when I first listened to it.

Was recommended the Ex quite a while ago as a punk recommendation but almost all of its members are part of free jazz/free improv circles. I'm not that versed in free improv or jazz but they sound good to me so I'd recommend their stuff.

I think the band has a record label for free jazz too so you could look at that too.

Huh, never heard of Ex.

Also, what's with free playing generally being associated with jazz? You could easily do it with almost any other genre, why is that only jazz people do it?

Jazz has always had free improv as a staple, at least some kinds of jazz. Free improv doesn't necessarily have to be jazz but free jazz is just an extension of the improv already in some kinds of jazz.

Also I highly recommend the Ex. I've seen them compared to the Fall in that they're a long running post punk band, though they don't really sound the same. Along with the solo free improv stuff the band itself has a free improv album too.

The Ex are really really really good and their current guitarists play in Lean Left that's a really neat free improv group.
Their old bassist, Luc Ex, also played with Madame Luckerniddle (which also contained Zeena Parkins and Tom Cora) and their "new" album from this year is one of my favorites.

Also, is Phil Minton the best crazy old man?

it is good that free jazz has inspired you to express yourself

here's a nice video of Mats Gustafsson and Thurston Moore playing some music and talking about music and checking out records in a record store
