Heya /mu/
Tomorrow I'm hosting a Christmas feast dinner party. Can you help me compile an elegant, jazzy playlist? Cool, jazzy city vibes.. shhoow me whatcha got!
>>
>>61126399
Art Blakey - Moanin
Vince Guaraldi - Charlie Brown Christmas
Miles Davis - Ascensur por oiwnabwoenon (just google "Miles Davis french soundtrack"
>>
get you some Cal Tjader, hoss
>>
Saints and Poets- Gracie Terzian
>>
>>61126423
Thanks! I have ascenseur pour l'echfaud on vinyl, so totally the right direction in terms of sound. Those other two suggestions are tops, too. Solid start.
>>
>>61126399
An Oscar Peterson Christmas (essential Christmas-time jazz)
Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto (soft and smooth bossa)
Bob Brookmeyer - Bob Brookmeyer and Friends (inoffensive + underrated Tony Bennett feature)

For dinner parties I'd recommend sticking to ballads, (hard-)bop can get a little obnoxious as background noise.

Hah looks like we've got some similar taste, you really can't beat Getz's swooning tone.
>>
Just make sure it doesn't put your guests into a jazz trance.

In addition to what others suggest, Paul Desmond is a west coast cool jazz maniac with a buttery tone that's super comfortable just being in the background.

I think I'll sneak it in later in the evening when we're plenty drunk and relaxed

Herbie Hancock -- Empyrean Isles

Pat Metheney Group -- Kin

BADBADNOTGOOD -- III
>>
>>61126641
This is oddly comedic
>>
>>61126729
Word. This track makes me think of the excellent film The Talented Mr. Ripley and Matt Damon's smouldering rendition.
Thank ya
>>
>>61126399
Bill Evans - portrait in Jazz
Jim Hall - Concertio
Grant Green - Idle Moments
Ahmed Jamal - At the perishing/.but not for me
Modern Jazz Quartet - Django
Pierre Bousaguet and Alain Jean-Marie - Still Dukish
Chris Potter - Imaginary Cities
Wouldn't go astray.
You should well just toss in an Eric Dolphy or Cecil Taylor track somewhere random too. Just have all this really chill music on and periodically stick in some dissonant as fuck stuff to keep them on their toes.
>>
>>61126778
hancock and BADBAD - fire
something about kin feels cheesy, but the still possesses a slinky vibe I like

If you are looking for universal appeal, this one gained my wife's seal of approval, who played side one of the LP about five times in a row the other day.

Totally forgot about these cats, great selections.

Also, Idle Moments

Also, just gonna point out op, this weeks /blindfold/ is Christmas tunes selected by JTG and its some really solid stuff and every so often people will sit up and be like "the fuck, is this dance of the sugar plum fairy?"

He did enough leg work as a sideman, he deserves class players on his own sessions.

Oh, Kin is cheesy as a fondue-caked dick, but damn if it isn't good.

My god that album is fucking brilliant when you're stoned. I never really liked it but I showed it to my friends and happened to be high at the time, it was so fucking seductive and now I can never hear it the same again.

if you want really positive vibes, check this out, modal jazz from japan

Hah! I'm listening to Deathconsciousness and sipping a rye and soda. But I love the speculation, and rolling face is the shit.
>>
>>61126399
Why don't you just put on music that you actually know and like? I mean, what are you trying to prove, and to whom?
>>
>>61127674
shh is ok bby
>>
>>61127622
This is sick. Mentioned earlier in thread, but to all who have posted it, thanks for the rad suggestion. I'll probably put this on in my shop while I'm working, in addition to the party. I really dig.

alright, check this out then, it's incredibly positive in attitude
>>
>>61127674
I really like jazz, and actually know a decent amount about it, but it's hard to call to mind all the good shit when I sit down to make a playlist. So for that, I appreciate the help.
I also do that, pretty much always, and it goes well, but again, I'm feeling jazzy for this shindig and was looking for support to make sure I get in all the good shit
>>
A later evening play. Listen to at least 2 minutes of this and tell me it doesn't blow your mind

>>61127755
thank you, and I'm not trying to be difficult, but this is actually too jolly for me. I dig slinky, cool. classy. My attitude may be positive, but that's not necessarily the vibe I jive with. I'm deceivingly brooding and introverted. You read my attitude, but for once in this thread, not actually my jam. Thank you though, g
>>
>>61127862
mind... yeah, blown. This is a very good conversation. Every artist has something real to contribute, however background. It's quite clean and uncluttered. Not that cluttered is bad, but this is delightfully readable. Nice.
>>
try this too, good jazz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zl5vpy__dQ

thank you! good good.

Anything else for the cause? I need to fill a few hours; any standby perfect jazz is so appreciated

And also, many thanks to all contributors. If anyone resides in Chicago, I'm almost tempted to invite you..

>nobody mentioned Coltrane's My Favorite Things

If you want to expand your geographical range a little more, Swedish bari saxophonist Lars Gullin is pretty fucking groovy, and I get a laid back "big city" feel from a lot of his jams.

I couldn't find an example from his 1976 album Bluesport, so I just upped it here (it's V0, hope that's serviceable).

Enjoy
