Wait a second: why did European folk music evolve into the most serious, respected and varied music in the world, but the same thing didn't happen anywhere else?

how serious & varied an art form is is relative to your perspective.
like you may not be able to tell the difference between music from Ghana & Guinea and an african may not be able to tell the difference between Bach and Liszt. That doesn't necessarily make one better or worse.

it's almost the standards of what is serious and respected were set by Europeans... or as if Europeans had access to the resources and leisure time to make more and more varied musical forms... hm must be coincidence

It really comes down to racism and elitism. The music of white cultures is seen as the benchmark of quality and all other music is inferior and will never be able to compare. It's dance music, party music, drinking music and all that. It was certainly not made for so called intellectuals in stuffy concert halls.

No, it's only complicated in certain ways. African folk music is a hundred times more rhythmically complex, eastern folk music is more harmonically and modally complex, etc. But I guess what people see as most important just happens to be the strengths of white music, what a coincidence.

A lot of it was. There's even evidence that composers as old as Johannes Ciconia wrote certain music with the intent it will be listened to by other people who were into studying music theory.
Because the Church. Western art music owes its heritage to liturgical chant, not European folk music. The church also allowed an environment where composers were paid and could develop principles of harmony and structure

I'd guess because the scientific method was applied to music and we got a long history of music theory which supported it
